OK ILMrs, if you have a band or musical project, please name it here. I want to find out who is playing in what.

Mark (MarkR), Monday, 19 August 2002 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Sundar, Kate St. Claire, I know there are many others.

Mark (MarkR), Monday, 19 August 2002 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Hi, I'm Matt, was in Braille Party (early 80's math-thrash band, was in the Queegs (four guitar very hard pop band), now recording as DJ Veal and doing the odd one-off solo guitar thingy.

matt riedl (veal), Monday, 19 August 2002 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Flashpan

And if all goes well, I'm going to be producing a rap record this year. The MC is TERRIBLE. It's going to be so grate, haha.

I play guitar in The Lollies. We have a couple of singles out in the UK, we've been on about 3 or 4 compilations now, and our debut album is coming out in October. Blah dee blah, plug plug. Oh, and our record release party is going to be happening at the Canadian Embassy, this amuses me so much I have to talk about it constantly because I find it so funny.

kate, Monday, 19 August 2002 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

No band, but various musical projects including Gbloink! and BeatBlog

duane, Monday, 19 August 2002 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry, answered this on the Sloan thread. I'm really starting to have an identity crisis here. I'm NOT Canadian! Not even secretly!

kate, Monday, 19 August 2002 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I am the guitarist-singer-songwriter-producer-visual designer-guy for the Shimmer Kids Underpop Association. My only goal is to be a complete and total failure. So far so good!

The Evangelistas!

They have supported the Fall, Millionaire and The Rapture.
They are dead good.

I have something to do with The Chemistry Experiment as does Emily who sometimes writes on here when she can afford to pay the phone bill.

I am in a band called the PERVY HOBBIT FANCIERS.

We should also have a subscription magazine, a bit like THE CHAP.

We haven't actually tried to play anything yet. WE ARE GRATE!

i know some musicians from 'round new zealand, some of them well, some of whom i've intimately jammed with etc.. and they all know how to play guitar, drums, bass, keyboards (the usual) yet none of these people want to play synths -- they're typically scared of not making any sound of interest or not being able to control what happens next, or they think it's not a legitimate instrument, or maybe they don't think whatever will come out will be "lo-fi" enough (to fit the export market profile)

i don't want to make dance music fit to the current styles, and some synths i have access to don't sound like the classic cliche synth gimmick sounds (unless you really want them to) or the current intelligent dance music type of stuff which in all cases would be boring anyway

ok i'm very lazy, but getting these musicians into position to play the machines has been a step too far from almost anyone i've discussed the idea with

ok i'm probably a horribly argumentative and pedantic person to get on with in any case, but "techno-phobia" on my part (dance music) and others (how does this synth work ?) just means stuff isn't getting done -- ever wonder why it's just the one guy usually doing synth stuff or singer + synth player in "synth duo" ?

honorary exception to duane who can play the synth but prefers the drums qua space dust -- duane simply plays synths intuitively and it works well

dishonorary exception to prats in auckland (a completely different new zealand city on a different island) who collect old synths to no good use except perhaps apeing everything we've heard from london anyway

george gosset (gegoss), Tuesday, 20 August 2002 13:41 (twenty-two years ago)

oh yeah, christine, duane, violet, ? guitarist, ? bassist, etc.. really hope to make it to your party

george gosset (gegoss), Tuesday, 20 August 2002 13:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm in the Sunday Bags! It's just me until I get a singer but it's the Dave Clark 5 with a drummachine!! I don't think that's redundant but who knows!!!

lawrence kansas, Tuesday, 20 August 2002 14:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm in the recently revived A Nation Mourns. Formed 1983, supported The Primitives, Orange Juice, Carter etc in the 80's. Released a few recds/compilation trax back then. Got slagged by Everett True in the NME. Sort of stopped in about 1988, mutated into the fantastic Electric Rembrandt(see upcoming ILX comp!)for assualt on London toilet circuit circa 1994-7 and then became A Nation Mourns again in 2002.

What we sound like : sort of noisy Factory-pop. Plenty of cheap guitar, shouting and synths.

Best Songs - "Why Does The Hero Get The Girl when The Hero is a Bastard?", "Apologize" and "Back To the Start"

Will play live for the first time for 15 years later in 2002 in some suitably shit London venue. Possibly with Fractured and I, Ludicrous. Hopefully some of you will come see us/throw things/fall over.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 20 August 2002 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

i was in two bands:

cantankerous tumor: (the name we held the longest, although it seemed to change every week or so), tortured the suburban south eastern pa/delaware/nj vfw hall circuit between 1993-1994 by playing copped birthday party moves (being too young and stupid to know they were ripped from the bell of the stooges anyway), while i abused a keyboard and played david yow. (geeta, if yr reading, this is where the now infamous "i threw up on a cross once" took place. i guess this could also go in the "has anyone thrown up on stage" thread too.) there are no recordings extant (thank god.)

fatty arbuckle: burbled to the surface between 1996-99, playing mostly "happenings" (i.e. out of windows, on the street, setting up between other bands sets, birthday parties, etc.) musically we came somewhere between pussy galore/neubauten or the dead c trying to cover throbbing gristle. (this was mostly because of ineptitude and equipment. i doubt any of the other members had even heard any of those bands at that point.) greatest moment: playing halloween 99 as the fall, thereby allowing me to live out one of my only fantasies. there is one demo tape, thankfully mostly destroyed, and a few video tapes. (including one of me in a robot costume which caught on fire. if only we had lived in rhode island, we might have been accepted...)

i also performed as a "dj" opening for my friend alexis' band in nyc a few times in 99 and 00. mostly i would do otomo yoshihide style turntable abuse (no records, playing the stylus directly on the mat or on other "surfaces" [sandpaper, etc.]) and other manhandled consumer electronics. greatest moment: clearning out an entire room full of snotty nyc hipsters with 20 minutes of drone, and then being threatened to "have my ass kicked" by the owner. ingrate.

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 20 August 2002 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

dog latin, Sunday, 25 August 2002 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess I'll plug Automat, my solo musical project, since I'm busy burning CD-Rs at the moment. Six-song debut EP about to be released on my own Ravenna Records; should be available through indiepages.com within the next few days, and Tweekitten and Futurepopshop a little while after that. Lo-fi pop in the vein of K Records' more melodic stuff and perhaps Felt.

I was in a band called The Poconos before that. You can purchase our Jigsaw 7" at Indiepages for $2.00. Jigsaw's Chris seriously overestimated the demand for such a project, which means you the consumer benefit from the surplus. :)

I also do some freelance writing - just had a fairly substantial Langley Schools Music Project interview in the latest issue of Scram - and very occasionally DJ at shows here in Seattle.

Pop Playground: R&B Roundup 2002

Just a one-off for now, but I might do it again. Puts together lots of my recent thorts on the state of pop music in a sort of mad rush of typing.

five months pass...
Once again with feeling...who else is in a band?

Mark (MarkR), Saturday, 15 February 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a solo project called "Slow Death" that consists entirely of geiger counter recordings. No effects, no edits, etc. I'm in another noise project called "Smashed Femur Dance Party" with the guy from Prurient. I've been doing vocals for that recently.

Dave Fischer, Sunday, 16 February 2003 05:07 (twenty-two years ago)

ILM'er Matt Maxwell have an occasional band called The Roswell Incident.

A local Long Beach coffee bar that I frequent has been bullying me into playing a show there even after repeated warnings that it'll probably be me droning a guitar over a laptop backing track. So I suppose something will come out of this too.

Chris Barrus (xibalba), Sunday, 16 February 2003 07:57 (twenty-two years ago)

space dust is playing again in a few weeks, there's some new people going to be in the band, we might even practice with them. international telepaths (= me & dianne) is supposed to be playing soon too i think. i'll do some synth stuff with george gosset some time if he can get his fuckin shit together too.

duane, Sunday, 16 February 2003 09:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Brazen Hussies next electro-stonercore opus nearing completion. Yes.

dave q, Sunday, 16 February 2003 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

What Chris meant to say is that he and i are the primary component of the Roswell Incident. Geez, that webpage is old, and lots of it is made up... Though we're trying to get our first release out by the end of the year. I'm betting the package will be more expensive than the discs themselves (how's that for shallow?).

Don't forget the legendary DUI, Chris.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Sunday, 16 February 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

mosurock (mosurock), Sunday, 16 February 2003 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh! Yeah! Here would probably be the place to say that I'm in a new band. It started as my solo project, but it's far outgrown that, since our long-time soundman turned out to be a laptop-ist genius. So it's laptop beatz, shoegazer guitar and girly vocals.

We are called The Electric Bubblegum Arkestra and we sound a bit like a cross between Stereolab, New Order and The Monkees. Actually, no, make that we sound a lot like New Order, considering we just spent half the day sampling them.

If you'd like to see us live, and you live anywhere near London, come down and see us this Friday (that would be the 21st February) at the Metro Club on Oxford Street. I think we're on about 8.30, so don't blink or you'll miss us.

Oh, and I think I'm DJ-ing again at the CTCL night on Saturday 22nd at the Buffalo Bars. Don't know what time.

kate, Sunday, 16 February 2003 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

solo project: tinobeat
psych-ish pop, but kind of darker.. um, I dunno. its pretty cool.

band: the holy molys
girly pop, but with pretty noisy guitars...

hey doug, sorry for not emailing you back, I'll email you today...

We're just pressing our first album which we recorded in a church hall in cornwall last summer with a good friend. All exciting stuff, well for us anyway :)

The newest mp3's are at http://www.myspace.com/hundredhanded

Any comments welcome :)

That is, my band, the Franchise, is playing at Continental on Sunday, August 28, at 9:45. You could come to the show. Or, you know, not.

The Mad Puffin (The Mad Puffin), Monday, 22 August 2005 14:03 (nineteen years ago)

It's fun, usually.

Dan - looking forward to your mix cd!

My band: Kid Congo & The Pink Monkey Birds -- our new album is out next month. It's called "Philosophy and Underwear", out on TransSolar Records. The promos are out in Europe so won't be surprised if it's leaked soon. Fans of Kid's past stuff will be pleasantly surprised, methinks. Touring all over Europe this autumn (hurrah!) -- I hope we get to play Optimo!

We're doing a show as part of the Howl Festival here on NYC this Saturday, the 27th, btw.

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Monday, 22 August 2005 18:33 (nineteen years ago)

i have started a myspace thingy for the newer more whimsical and perhaps slightly more depressed me of late, which can be found at http://www.myspace.com/lighttoucher ... for the time being it's all processed guitar stuff... melodic... basically ripping off fennesz, tbh, but i think it's pretty good anyhow.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 02:19 (nineteen years ago)

FirstWorld, your stuff is very nice. I am adding you to our myspace friends.

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 03:19 (nineteen years ago)

thanks very much : )
i'm listening to american altitude right now. what do you do in the band? i like it, it's fairly straight songforms but kind of a weird way of going about them compartmentally. or something.

firstworldman (firstworldman), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 03:27 (nineteen years ago)

I'm the drummer, but I play lead banjo on Mountain and a Missile :)

The stuff on that page, excepting the Blind Bird demo, is all over two years old. We're recording a new one right now.

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 03:37 (nineteen years ago)

firstworldman, that's some pretty stuff indeed.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Tuesday, 23 August 2005 04:19 (nineteen years ago)

thanks a lot, dan...
not to be the guy who trades compliments with everybody, but i am genuinely excited about your rvng mix... i really wanted to go to a crazy rhythms party when i was in new york, i guess my home stereo will have to suffice for now though.

I see that glass wave video from another thread. I think clemenza's link is showing the last youtube you watched. It's either a mistake, or clemenza is pulling some sort of Time Magazine's person of the year deal.

That's weird--the link works fine for me, and seems to work for snoball too. Here it is again, non-embedded:

Am I the only person who gets an Israeli fascist right wing demonstration video instead of clemenza's band?

i get what is apparently a playlist of my recent youtube favorites. as far as i can tell clemenza's band is a mirror that reflects back into your soul?

Did a bit of a half-baked job plugging ¢h@r1i€ $tr@ight earlier so should probably elaborate on YouTube clip. They're a big band in their domestic market (won an MTV Europe award and Czech equivalent to the Brits) but are having to start from the bottom of the ladder elsewhere. I usually have a knee-jerk hatred of Anglophile indie-pop but they are genuinely very good and I think they could fit in quite well on mainstream radio across Europe and particularly in the UK. Aside from a glowing mention in The Guardian in the summer they haven't really had much attention in the press here.

If anyone is interested in booking or interviewing them, let me know. The lead singer is very funny and engaging.

I have a few things out there in the shops right now: HASSAN ( on L.I.E.S. label) and MMT Tapes ( 4 12" records/ unknown label). Electronic things.

I'm not trying to brag or anything but my mom will listen to my 2008 joint every now and again. As for my one from 2010 it just rocks too hard for her tastes. Point of reference, she's into Adele, Elton John, Il Divo - that whole scene.
