This doesn't really fit the bill as much as I'd want it (it's not a frequent thing during the song), but right at about 1:50 - 2:00 minute mark Kim Deal either - by bodily goof or full on intention - inhales twice quickly (and furthering on the notion of it being intentional, than also unnecessarily) to add a sort of... compliment?...to the beat of the song...anyways, it works. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pd7ILa_mhgA
This example's a little more obvious and from the little I've heard (hence the asking of this question/thread) one of the best examples of breathing to set the tempo and suchhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vhv5ZR-WQeA&playnext=1&list=PL1996809023521575&index=23(the video itself is irrelevant)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XMrZsR8hapk^This one isn't so intentional as it is usual with either a good pair of head-phones or overly sensitive recording.... but anyways, the drawing of Bilinda's breath in between "ooohs" really adds a (more than usual) layer of sensuality to the song.

Wow, Tanya was in the band during Safari? Also, who is the drummer cuz that's not Britt or the guy from Last Splash.
Sorry for being off-topic. There are a few Pixies songs that Black Francis did that rhythmic breathing thing that Kim does there. "Tame" for one.

There's at least one significant intake of breath in INXS - "Need You Tonight."
Pink Floyd - "Don't Leave Me Now" is set to a breathing tempo, though it's probably a synth instead of real breath.

Somewhat off-topic:
Is it possible to sing in a whisper, or do you lose all tonality when whispering?

Lots of buddhist music does this I think. I have this album:
Kamtchatka: Dance Drums From The Siberian Far East
I remember there are several 'a capella' tracks based around throat singing and breathing.
First song that came to mind, tho perhpas not really qualified:
Klaxons - Golden Skans (sebastian 2.0 remix)

The score to 'Dead Calm' incorporates heavy breathing for music in jump scenes.Mary J. Blige's 'Just Fine' has an odd snorting or breathing in noise in the background. The 'Destiny's Child' song 'Lose My Breath' makes breathing part of the chorus.Genesis' 'Throwing It All Away' has that breathy "AAAH!" thing going on in the harmony.
I'll see if I can come up with more.

Some Morricone Giallo scores - one of the Argento ones for sure and another one in particular, the title of which escapes me (like breath) right now

Dude the line-ups changed so often that it's one of those, like Hole, where only Kim Deal was the sole consistent member. Pretty much right after the Safari EP did Tanya sort of decide she wanted to put more of her focus in Belly - so yeah, she hopped off between Pod and Last Splash.
I had to look into wiki for the deal on the drums, this is how they list the line-up for the Safari EP:
]Kim Deal - Vocals, GuitarKelley Deal - GuitarTanya Donelly - Vocals, GuitarJosephine Wiggs - Vocals, Bass, CelloBritt Walford, (billed as Mike Hunt) - DrumsJon Mattock, - Drums (Safari)
so I dunno what the story is but I'd only assume that Britt (why did he insist on going by different pseudonyms all the time?) jumped off the band in the making of it.

and of course that drummer's a goner as well if you've seen the latest Yo La Tengo-lookalike dude they had for Mountain Battles (maybe with a haircut)

Reminds me of the Greil Marcus quote -- "I once said I'd buy an album of Dylan breathing heavily. I still would. But not an album of Dylan breathing softly."
