havent even heard all of these iirc, which is sad to admit, but voting for WHISKEY IN THE JAR

markers, Sunday, 5 December 2010 20:50 (fourteen years ago)

I always liked the "Astronomy" cover.

yeah their "Whiskey In The Jar" is probably the last great thing Metallica has done or ever will do

ITT Deadliest Choads (some dude), Monday, 6 December 2010 00:20 (fourteen years ago)

Their version of "Loverman" is entirely abysmal. I'll go with "Die, Die My Darling."

Alex in NYC, Monday, 6 December 2010 00:21 (fourteen years ago)

Did neither of their Budgie covers, or their Killing Joke cover, make Garage Inc.? (One Budgie and the KJ were on the original EP, right? I don't have either one handy anymore to check, and I'm not sure what happened to the CD version. It just disappeared, which is a shame, because it's probably my favorite Metallica album since their second or third one, if not ever.)

Anyway, voting "Whiskey In the Jar," which was my single of the year that year. (Love Thin Lizzy's version too of course.)

xhuxk, Monday, 6 December 2010 02:10 (fourteen years ago)

So yeah, they're on there -- This poll leaves out the whole second disc! (Including "So What," which is also great.)

Disc two

This poll leaves out the whole second disc!

I figure this being a Garage, Inc. poll, rather than a Garage Days, Re-revisited poll, explains why the second disc is being polled.

Mercyful Fate by a landslide. James' vocals are of course quite horrible on this, and while I wouldn't ever in a million years prefer them to the godly originals, instrumentally they were quite entertaining.

"Sabbra Caddabra" was quite good, "Astronomy" was just an odd choice (gimme BOC's any day), "It's Electric" was fun but Diamondhead's version was godly...

I dunno, unlike the original Garage Days, there really aren't any cuts that stand anywhere close to teh originals, where on the original Garage Days tehy flat out made some of the songs their own.

god, this is so OTM. the original 'Garage Days' was such a fun lark. I mean they *owned* those songs so hardcore. plus I love the basement production on the re-revisited EP. maybe the only song they couldn't possibly better was the Misfits. the deck was stacked against them there.

but, like, I actually went back and got the Holocaust stuff, and... Metallica's "The Small Hours" just so totally, completely slays the fuck out of the original

whereas, what am i gonna do, listen to Hetfield hoarse his way through "Turn the Page" or whatever? gimme Seger until the cows come home

the whole project was such a bad, bad idea ... so indicative of why, in my mind's eye, Metallica broke up in 1990

Seriously can't believe so many people are suddenly pretending that Thin Lizzy cover was good! What's next? The critical reevaluation of Load and Reload as the band's true masterpieces?

one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 20 December 2010 02:33 (fourteen years ago)

it was the biggest hit from the album, it's always seemed pretty well regarded, stop whining

some dude, Monday, 20 December 2010 02:52 (fourteen years ago)

I'm not whining, its an awful song.

WHISKEY IN A JAROOOOOOOO

markers, Monday, 20 December 2010 02:58 (fourteen years ago)

it's an awful song or an awful version of a good song?

some dude, Monday, 20 December 2010 03:04 (fourteen years ago)

The second part.

one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 20 December 2010 03:04 (fourteen years ago)

I'm honestly not butthurt, I just remember all sorts of people absolutely hating this song back when it was on MTV every other hour, and rightfully so.

one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 20 December 2010 03:05 (fourteen years ago)

i like it

markers, Monday, 20 December 2010 03:07 (fourteen years ago)

as hated as it may be by some people it's probably one of the least hated post-Black Album singles they've released. and imo it's a perfectly enjoyable through the Lizzy arrangement of the song.

some dude, Monday, 20 December 2010 03:12 (fourteen years ago)

I think thats the problem with it for me, though, it just sticks so closely to the Thin Lizzy version that it feels so unnecessary. James' vocals on this bother me so much, I'd much rather hear Phil singing it.

one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 20 December 2010 03:15 (fourteen years ago)

I'll agree James' vocals are awful on that one but their cover packs the punch that the Thin Lizzy version doesn't have. Whenever I listen to the latter it sounds so thin and tame I always wish I was hearing the Metallica version instead.

Moka, Monday, 20 December 2010 20:43 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i hate to say it but you're right, the super compressed '90s major label sheen on the Metallica version gives it a nice heft, makes me wish TL did a re-recording of it when their studio sound was at its slickest/heaviest circa Jailbreak

some dude, Monday, 20 December 2010 20:55 (fourteen years ago)

I dunno, Metallica's production around that era was more annoying than powerful. the guitars always had this slippery, not quite heavy, scooped sound to them which made it even harder to like the Load albums.
