hotelopera: that 2 year period when every R&B video looked like it took place in a space ship

this is prob my fav period in r&b

gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Monday, 6 December 2010 02:56 (fourteen years ago)

which is why i was so disappointed when the "walkin on the moon" video went for that inside a spaceship vibe but did it..... so cheaply

gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Monday, 6 December 2010 02:57 (fourteen years ago)

really gets overlooked in all scholarly studies of afro-futurism (xpost)

ITT Deadliest Choads (some dude), Monday, 6 December 2010 02:57 (fourteen years ago)

"no scrubs" is probably my favorite inside a spaceship video

gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Monday, 6 December 2010 02:59 (fourteen years ago)

or maybe "larger than life"

i wish i had a DJ slot at a club where i could just play the best songs from this list for an hour every friday

ITT Deadliest Choads (some dude), Monday, 6 December 2010 03:03 (fourteen years ago)

nobody would even think "hey, they're playing a lot of stuff from one label" because there's so little of a constant thread through this stuff

ITT Deadliest Choads (some dude), Monday, 6 December 2010 03:03 (fourteen years ago)

whoa, this list. and r&b's spaceship era seconded, i'll take that over the afrofuturism that usually gets discussed any day.

i definitely want to vote for "he loves u not" here just cuz it seems so forgotten, but it's so excellent.

lex lex lex lex lex on the track BOW (lex pretend), Monday, 6 December 2010 10:51 (fourteen years ago)

the-dream should probably take it upon himself to resurrect dream's career. i wonder if their album was any good?

lex lex lex lex lex on the track BOW (lex pretend), Monday, 6 December 2010 10:52 (fourteen years ago)

Went with "You Gets No Love", but tbh I haven't heard 50% of these or if I have I don't recognize them by name.

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Monday, 6 December 2010 10:53 (fourteen years ago)

Not actually on this list but it reminds me: how awesome was the Just Blaze remix of "Burnin' Up".

"Dance With Me" (which I might not even like quite as much as "Peaches & Cream" anyway but whatevs) deserves votes for being the song at the centre of the universe, how can anyone not dance to that song.

Tim F, Monday, 6 December 2010 11:02 (fourteen years ago)

the moment at the centre of this particular universe might be nicole scherzinger's "it's bad boy, bitch" to open "come to me"

Danity Kanye

loooooool at this typo btw

lex lex lex lex lex on the track BOW (lex pretend), Monday, 6 December 2010 11:10 (fourteen years ago)

also i'm sure "tell me" was a single off press play too! at any rate this remix of it might be one of my favourite of the whole 00s - the acapella section is so epic

lex lex lex lex lex on the track BOW (lex pretend), Monday, 6 December 2010 11:11 (fourteen years ago)

haw @ Danity Kanye. i have a friend named Kane and always accidentally type his name as Kanye too.

when I was narrowing down the poll options i deleted a lot of songs nobody would remember, "Tell Me" was like ehh some people remember this but who cares

ITT Deadliest Choads (some dude), Monday, 6 December 2010 13:19 (fourteen years ago)

The only good singles listed are Me & U, He Loves U Not and Damaged. The last decade hasn't been very kind to Bad Boy.

That's not a "laugh track", it's an audience and you're in it. (MintIce), Monday, 6 December 2010 13:51 (fourteen years ago)

Faith Evans - "You Gets No Love"

ITT Deadliest Choads (some dude), Monday, 6 December 2010 14:52 (fourteen years ago)

i liked "Dance With Me" more when i just knew it from the middle of the "Peaches & Cream" video and thought it was just some weird out of nowhere bridge of the song. hearing the whole thing with the stupid "if you're sexy and you know it clap your hands" part kind of bummed me out.

it's true that they've seemed to run on the fumes of past glories this whole time, but i feel like the best of this list attests that that's not really true. i mean, how many other rap/R&B imprints can claim that many hits of that caliber over the course of the whole decade? maybe 2 or 3 tops, if any?

ITT Deadliest Choads (some dude), Monday, 6 December 2010 14:54 (fourteen years ago)

i have no real business voting on this poll but i voted for "peaches & cream" because it's one of my all-time favorite songs

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 6 December 2010 14:57 (fourteen years ago)

if you like even one of these songs you have business voting in it. imo that's how ILM polls should work.

ITT Deadliest Choads (some dude), Monday, 6 December 2010 15:53 (fourteen years ago)

...What was the question? Still hung up on who the Joel Robinson of Bad Boy would be... Oh, right--definitely "She Loves U Not."

tempted to agree with this just off of Part III and its singles, but their last 2 albums were pretty weak and devoid of hits. if 99's "Anywhere" came out a few months later it'd be a lock, though.

ITT Deadliest Choads (some dude), Monday, 6 December 2010 18:20 (fourteen years ago)

this is a great latter-day 112 single:

This is one of those things where you hear a song out and the bit that sends everyone wild is the bit you think is corny, but gradually after a while you realise that it's, like, corny in a way that rightfully sends people wild.

Tim F, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 07:31 (fourteen years ago)

"anywhere" was awesome. voting for "he loves u not." was dancing to "show stopper" last night.

i probably like "me & u" better but oh well, dream it is.

that was probably the first song I heard with Diddy playing a prominent role on it where I was like "wait, maybe he shouldn't die"

Are Dave Navarro and the drummer from Blink 182 really featured in 'bad boys' or only featured in the video?

Moka, Sunday, 27 March 2011 02:29 (fourteen years ago)

And what's going on with that youtube video xpost? I watched the whole thing thinking it was an intro to some hip hop video and I was sorely dissapointed... are they for real?

Moka, Sunday, 27 March 2011 02:36 (fourteen years ago)

Oh! just noticed they are a real band and that they're on this poll. Whole video seemed like some spoof band and the thing about 'the dream falling apart' seemed to fit the theme. I've been waiting almost a decade for this reality show trend to die down and it just keeps going on and on and on.

Moka, Sunday, 27 March 2011 02:38 (fourteen years ago)

Mmmm song's not bad but sounds as generic as they look.

Moka, Sunday, 27 March 2011 02:43 (fourteen years ago)

Also anyone else notices how almost every r&b video from 1999-2001 looks like 'virtual insanity' or perhaps a much cheaper version of Jackson's Scream? Futuristic bubblegum spaceship and such.

tru

they reminisce over dayo (D-40), Sunday, 27 March 2011 03:26 (fourteen years ago)

Peaches & Cream should be the only track with votes imo, Me & U could snag a couple I guess.

That cut Smile off the 112 lp was tops too, cant tell you how many make-out sessions were accompanied by my 112 mix cd. Slims voice always made the ladies splash.

Spottie_Ottie_Dope, Sunday, 27 March 2011 06:08 (fourteen years ago)

i'm not a huge fan of "Me & U" but that's just a very popular and well liked song, if i'd made "Official Girl" an option and that one i'd def be bitching about the Cassie fanclub but w/ "Me & U" it's not really the same thing.

Well, they definitely look awkward on the video but thought maybe they had contributed some sort of live thing that was looped and digitally transformed beyond recognition.
