i've never seen them before but have recently(ish) fallen in love with their music. plus i'm freshly done with azerrad's book, and the chapter on them had me laughing out loud in a stalled nyc subway for about 5 straight minutes. my love for them was strengthened greatly because of that.
but at this point, would they be worth seeing? i dont expect the intensity and insanity of the shows from their more youthful days given how many exhausting drugs they've taken, but i dont want to go and see a bunch of acid fried bums playing sloppy half assed songs.
what's the consensus on the performance of modern day buttholes? $35 for the show...but of course if they're bad then the price is a lot higher than that in the end because my opinion of a band as being genius (intentionally or not) will be ruined and my small list of heroes will diminish.
two thousand and ten buttholes: worth it?

their shows from the late 80s/early 90s are some of the most intense musical experiences I ever had, and for that reason alone I avoided their reunion tour. it could only be disappointing. maybe if they were touring on the heels of a new strong album (c.f. swans) I'd reconsider, but it seemed like a straight cash-in. I dunno, maybe they were great?

I don't even know who's even in the band at this point besides Gibby. Paul Leary probably? I think there's some other thread around here that has a recent live clip (it's the one that turns your screen purple)

a bunch of acid fried bums playing sloppy half assed songs.
they were great back in the day but this was essentially what you were seeing back then too
Butthole Surfers- Classic or dud?

i saw the buttholes when i was in high school... this was prob around 2000, 2001. they were alright but not like, an amazing mind-blowing experience or anything.

I saw 'em in '90 and '92 (the latter show at Lollapalooza) and would absolutely recommend skipping them now. They had something rare and uncloneable back then, and age has almost certainly stolen it away.

Shakey Mo is absolutely otm. They were acid fried, sloppy bums back in'86 when I saw them and that was late in the day. To me, that was their appeal. Back then, the Buttholes and say Flipper were one of a few bands doing this hilarious, non po-faced punk rock attack, without the uniform. I still remember a video of theirs from the mid 80's. Gibby flailing about with a megaphone as a cream suited librarian type arrived on stage to wrestle with a tuba in an earnest manner, with disastrous consequences
Chet is also right about the Azerrad chapter. If you haven't done already, do yourself a favour. It is hilarious
