gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Monday, 6 December 2010 23:31 (fourteen years ago)

even with the total depressant that is chris brown's continued career here, i'm going for drake

t.i. coming out with 3-4 pretty great singles this year was such a horrible psyche-out for a dreadful album

Eminem takes this, no contest; his singles were omnipresent. Drake and B.O.B next.

cb makes me cuss out my radio everytime he comes on but going with eminem for just being played so much and so bad. not just "not afraid" and "love the way you lie" get ridiculous amounts of play here but "no love" and goddamn fucking "cinderella man" too.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 06:28 (fourteen years ago)

gotta be drake

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 17:07 (fourteen years ago)

i've only heard jay and em on the radio this year. and i know he's not on it but i'm voting jay because the radio station they play at work seemingly has empire state of mind pt. 2 on repeat

B.O.B. is a human Adidas ad, screw that guy.

Eminem by far... I mean he's fucking 40 or something now and his entire shtick is "i hate women and start inane beefs with anyone!" He should have really fucked off by now.

Yeah, I almost bought No Mercy until I saw that two of the songs by him I actually liked this year weren't even on the basic version album.

one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 13 December 2010 03:20 (fourteen years ago)

Voted Drake here though. Eminem was only on three inescapable songs around here it seemed (his two singles and the B.o.B. remix of that song with the Paramore chick). Drake was seemingly everywhere.

one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 13 December 2010 03:21 (fourteen years ago)

as i said in whatever the other thread it was, i loved every drake solo single this year aside from "over" and a decent number of his features ("aston martin music", "fall for your type", "loving you no more") but the ubiquity of "over" and how totally irritating that song is kind of cancels out a lot of that goodwill

ad hom alone (J0rdan S.), Monday, 13 December 2010 03:25 (fourteen years ago)

my vote is definitely for em -- "not afraid" & "love the way you lie" are epically annoying imo

ad hom alone (J0rdan S.), Monday, 13 December 2010 03:26 (fourteen years ago)

"Aston Martin Music" was pretty much the only Drake from this year I could tolerate.

one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 13 December 2010 03:30 (fourteen years ago)

as much as I'd love to vote for Ross or B.o.B. or Chris Brown or Drake, or even register my disappointment at how far Kanye or Jay or Em have fallen off, i gotta give this to Lil Wayne. no one song made me change stations as a split-second reflex more than "I'm Single," "Right Above It" signals the sad moment where he sounds more like a Drake wannabe than vice versa, and he managed to be that annoyingly ubiquitous despite a) being in jail most of the year and b) nothing from his worst album, Rebirth, being any kind of hit.

my respect, really. i wish i could totally turn my nose up at "Fancy" and "Miss Me"

any good drake songs works in spite of drake imo

feels like I was way more annoyed with Drake last year — yeah, he plumbed new depths this year, but at least I knew what to expect / was somewhat desensitized

and Chris Brown sux but I dug the "Deuces" remix so *shrug*, voted Em by default

unemployed aerosmith fans I have shoved (bernard snowy), Monday, 13 December 2010 04:11 (fourteen years ago)

not liking drake singles was pretty easy, he's just like really bad at rapping and sounds really uncool. definitely one of the last people on this list i wkiw in a billion years, & that means a lot to me

i like the beat on fancy a lot but i don't like his verses, and that ambient second half is just straight up retarded. no idea what is so hard to resist about miss me though

flopson, Monday, 13 December 2010 05:18 (fourteen years ago)

two things i think "miss me" has going for it are a. a pretty dope beat (drake's people ripping off tinny southern beats) b. it was one of the few songs on rap radio that was sort of just like a straight rap song. i know it has a fluttery drake hook (that i dig, but that's besides) but it was honestly kinda rare if you listened to a big block of radio ime to hear two guys just spitting for like 20 bars each or w/e they do

ad hom alone (J0rdan S.), Monday, 13 December 2010 05:21 (fourteen years ago)

things have gotten pretty bad when "they actually rapped through the whole thing" is our criterion for good chart hip-hop

Doctor Casino, Monday, 13 December 2010 06:20 (fourteen years ago)

I guess I don't entirely get why people hate Drake. I kinda like his album from this year.

he's just like really bad at rapping

*shrug*

i dont get how people so put off by the misogyny of 'typical hip hop' will put up with it from a dude just because he whines more, like because he realizes hes a shithead that should make any diff to us

lotta diamonds ... but prolly more display names (deej), Monday, 13 December 2010 06:41 (fourteen years ago)

its actually jaymc-types who im most confused to hear defending this guy. its like halfassed the-dream songs with terrible rapping performed by an incredibly abrasive, unlikeable human being, who likes to "[conclude] his performance by kneeling down on the edge of the stage to give the various chubby 15 year old white and Indian girls in his front row shower-nozzle masturbation material by declaring that they're "so sexy" and pointing them out individually for the JumboTron to let them know that he'd "take you home tonight if I could, baby". Dude is a disgrace to the artform which gave us Poison Clan."

lotta diamonds ... but prolly more display names (deej), Monday, 13 December 2010 06:44 (fourteen years ago)

I don't follow his career, man, I just like a few of his songs. Good production, imo.

Zsa Zsa Gay Bar (jaymc), Monday, 13 December 2010 06:48 (fourteen years ago)

Also, I hope you aren't conflating "jaymc-types" with "people so put off by the misogyny of 'typical hip hop.'"

When I say, e.g., it's a more engaging album than Tha Carter III, it has nothing to do with the rappers' personalities or lyrics.

jaymc-types i mean casual hip-hop fans who are interested in it as pop music, generally speaking

I try to stay away from "omnipresent" as a defining characteristic for annoying. I avoided Eminem fairly well but found his vocal style and substance annoying when I did hear him. I need to go back and listen to earlier Eminem and figure out more specifically what he was doing then versus now to understand my changed view. He seems to be stuck in a formulaic rut now.

Drake "solipsistic"...Yes, but he's a rapper so I find that harmless for him. I guess the stoner dude types are less annoying

rappers are rarely so inward-looking, or when they are they're up against a tradition of like scarface & tupac, where this guy is more kid cudi

that is very, very true

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 14 December 2010 01:03 (fourteen years ago)

I liked Kid Cudi's first album! I'd listen to it about a million times over Drake.

one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 14 December 2010 04:14 (fourteen years ago)

odd how, despite pretty much despising both, they've both had some of the best remixes of the past couple of years done for them - kid cudi/crookers, drake/drew austin, drake/deadboy, drake/nicki minaj
