I guess there has been talk on the Olde English Spelling Bee thread...but yeah, it's a super album, my favourite of the OESB releases I've heard so far.

Interesting. I heard of them via FACT Mag's list. They placed number 1. Friend told me i'd love them. He was right. Another short sentence. Back to the music.

listening to 'dagger paths' now, it walks a line between really great and really awful. just when it starts to seem dirge-y and amateurish, the vocal samples will come in and pull everything together. i'm curious to hear where their sound goes from here.

Descriptions of Dagger Paths kinda make me want to hear this, but the fact that the name of this project is as dumb as "Forest Swords" seems to warn me to keep my distance.

Had this on order for ages--not until Feb, sadly, but have it all downloaded, so know and love it. The mixtape on his site is pretty good, too.

― dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Wednesday, 22 January 2014 10:52 (eleven years ago)
I couldn't get into this at all, it was so ponderous and portentious, like late 90s instrumental trip-hop monging music.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 22 January 2014 10:55 (eleven years ago)
I listened to it on a long haul flight after 15 mils of valium and it really hit the spot.

Hmmm not much FS discussion on ILM. I think Compassion is his best yet, sounds like he finally has the tools and experience to acheive his vision. There are some hooks this time as well.

― paolo, Wednesday, 12 July 2017 17:56 (eight years ago)
It's a really good Forest Swords album, but so far hasn't stuck with me like his previous work. Definitely sounds lush though.
― change display name (Jordan), Wednesday, 12 July 2017 18:09 (eight years ago)
kinda hated his earlier work, but listened to this one quite a few times, so i guess... progress :-)
― Ludo, Wednesday, 12 July 2017 19:38 (eight years ago)
I know this is daft but my enjoyment of the new album has been affected by reviews I've read. I've enjoyed the earlier stuff (Dagger Paths more than Engravings) and I read a couple of reviews from sources that I trust that said the new one was awesome. I gave it a few listens and thought it was OK but not that great. I persevered because obviously sometimes it takes a while to appreciate an album
I then read another review that said the album was actually pretty average. Now when I listen to it I'm thinking 'do I want to like this album more than I actually do because of good reviews that I've read, or am I not liking it as much as I would if I hadn't read that other review?' Like I said, I realise this is silly and I should just take the music as it is and not be affected by what I've read about it but I also know it's not really possible to listen to music in isolation (so to speak)
I think the moral of this is that I need to spend less time reading music journalism. Or something
