Gregg Alexander: Classic Or Dud?

The New Radicals of course, but then singles by Ronan, Texas, Ronan again, Rod Stewart....are they all the same song? Is it any good? How come I find his production tics so thrilling even when it's something as otherwise utterly horrible as "Inner Smile"?

This question is being asked because I dreamed I posted it last night, incidentally.

For the New Radicals alone, that pretentious, mush-mouthed little mook should be dropped from a very great height onto a bed of very jagged and pointy rocks.....with that stupid hat stapled onto his head.

That irritating wanker from New Radicals, we talking about him? What Alex said. Torture optional.

Omar, Wednesday, 2 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Dud, because so many of the people he has been working with lately are producing CACK (Ronan, Geri...). It's like he's become the producer of choice for semi-celebrities. I hear the Appletons want to work with him, which I don't doubt.

Nicole, Wednesday, 2 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

One utterly fantastic single which he seems to have re-worked, with rapidly diminishing returns, ever since.

Andrew, Wednesday, 2 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Another in the unfortunate list of reasons why Canadians are so unfairly stereotyped, I'm afraid. I'll give him credit for wanting to be so open about doing nothing but sheer mush, I just hope he doesn't take himself seriously in the slightest.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 2 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I've been geogrpahically challenged lately , but Gregg Alexander is an American, he's from Grosse Pointe, a Detroit suburb. And he's a dud.

Scott Plagenhoef, Wednesday, 2 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

Is he American, then? Then it's further tragic evidence of Our Great Nation's Decline.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 2 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

He whines about how hard life was in Grosse Pointe (which, for those of you who don't know, is one of the wealthiest suburbs in the country). Another reason he should be chucked into the dud category.

Nicole, Thursday, 3 May 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link

I could still kiss you for that, Ned, regardless of where he's from. I had a very traumatic day at school wearing my I Am Canadian T shirt. I finally washed off the tar, but I can't take out the feathers until the medical centre reopens.

Nic, You suggest life is easy by virtue of it being a rich neighbourhood. Why is this? I'm sure it's harder for kids to go grow up in areas of expectancy. You're all quick to knock Alexander without even knowing him, admittedly I don't so I can't praise him. But you're so uneducated about him you bitch about him 'cos he's Canadian, how stupid is that. 'GREG ALEXNDER IS DA REEL GAY' wouldn't be out of place here, and it's the contribution of conclusion jumping petty minded jerks like you all seem to be, that makes the nation good or bad. Not one famous songwriter. Give him a break, and take a reality check.

So out of curiosity, Wayne, do you search the net for Gregg Alexander threads and post on them because you have nothing better to do, or are you paid?

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 20 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

You should hear his two pre-"fame"/Jeff Healey-like solo records, the second of which rhymes with the title of a horribly named RHCP record.

I'll admit to loving about half of the New Radicals record. I shouldn't by virtue of the image, the lyrics, the Hat, the pose, the video, and his fondness for playing the Hit twice each set. But so it goes.

I reckon Martin Blank would have kicked his ass in high school.

Andy K., Sunday, 20 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

He has redeemed himself with "Murder On The Dancefloor" hooray!

Tom, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Didn't know "MOTD" was one of his. Without doubt the sexiest pop record (or at least the sexiest pop vocal) around at the moment.

Peter Mills, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Well clearly he's got no hand in the sexy pop vocal. Ahem. It's co- written with La Bextor.

Tom, Tuesday, 22 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

How do you know? Photos of recording sessions TO THREAD NOW with clear, unambiguous views of Mr Alexander's hands.

Gregg Alexander is a fucking genius! I don't care what anyone says. That New Radicals CD is the best pop album to come along in years. I bought 5 copies as I work at a record store and got them for cheap. The lyrics are fucking incredible. The guy's certainly gifted in more ways than one. He may be a brat to some, but to me he's just an incredibly talented dude who is misunderstood by many. I wish to God he was recording more albums independently. I'll buy anything he records. If I ever got the chance to meet him, I'd certainly shake his hand, do the 'I'm not worthy' bow, kiss his fucking ass! Heck, I'd even suck his cock if I got enough beers in me! GREGG ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How can you people come into this message board and butcher the name of Gregg Alexander. He is responsible for some of the most moving tracks released in year. He has written tracks that connect to the mind of the average teen-ager, and kept his ethics in the process. Why accuse him of being a bad musician or person when he is the only one honest enough to tell the truth about the music business. The media production and sales of America is comprised completely of money driven business men and sell-out musicians. Gregg Alexander wasn't afraid to expose them, and you people are mad at him for that?

Because we didn't know who you were, and now we'll start doing the same to you. More seriously, what fantasy world do you live in in which the only musician who speaks 'the truth' about the music business is him? And why does that extremely dubious claim validate his music, instead of, say, his music?

wow, what a sadly pathetic thread.

Anyway, I just found that 'Get What You Give' single, from '97 or '98, out of curiosity. I remember HATING it at the time, when it was playing everywhere, and people talked about how 'edgy' this loser really was for bashing Marilyn Manson. Separated from all that hype, though, I really like the damn song. The 70's piano is total gold.

I've got absolutely no urge to find anytning else this guy's done, but I think this song is brilliant.

He wrote that Michelle Branch/Santana single.

Begin Again (formerly Can a Song Save Your Life?)[4] is a 2013 American musical romantic comedy-drama film written and directed by John Carney, and starring Keira Knightley, Mark Ruffalo and Adam Levine.[5] It premiered at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival.[6] Gregg Alexander co-wrote songs for the film with Danielle Brisebois, Nick Lashley, Rick Nowels and Nick Southwood. John Carney and Glen Hansard also contributed as songwriters for the film's music.

Gregg Alexander co-wrote songs for the film with Danielle Brisebois

I think this might be the first time they've worked as a team in several years. Now I'm curious about the results.

awwww

I was on Sunset Boulevard walking down the street shortly after the record came out and I heard the song blasting out of someone's car -- and my immediate instinct was, 'Oh, my God, someone stole my demo tape!' I was really serious, too. And then I heard it coming from another car like a minute later and I was like, 'Oh, my God, how did all these people get my demo tape?!"
