Eric B and Rakim "Paid In Full - Seven Minutes of Madness" - Classic or Dud?

The original verison is great, but way too short. This is perhaps the best hip-hop song of all time in my eyes. 15 years later the Bollywood beat is in a lot of songs today.

Chris V. (Chris V), Tuesday, 20 August 2002 12:07 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm not sure if this is the first landmark hip-hop remix or not but man this is way the hell classic. Lots of other aspects of this mix are still bit today -- shit, even the "the music just turns me on!" sample can be heard playing Jet Grind Radio.

Nate Patrin, Tuesday, 20 August 2002 12:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Super Classic! Rap's crowning moment in light hearted humour. Also a great way to close out one side of the Colors soudntrack.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Tuesday, 20 August 2002 12:54 (twenty-three years ago)

i wouldnt say its a Bollywood beat but the Ofra Haza sample can be a real shiver-sender. the actual beat, the name of which escapes me, was a stalwart of the time, later used by PM Dawn on that Spandau-sampling hit they had.

utterly classic of course, seen how much this track goes for on vinyl now? true madness

blueski, Tuesday, 20 August 2002 21:18 (twenty-three years ago)

the beat is "ashley's roachclip" by the soul searchers. the little flute sample eric b scratches is also from that song. i say classic-ish, but it def. doesn't sound as good to me now as it did then.

ron (ron), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 01:57 (twenty-three years ago)

a complete always forever DUD and the worst song on the colors lp!!

simon trife (simon_tr), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 04:00 (twenty-three years ago)

classic!!
but actually though the rap's great (especially the bit that rhymes 'paper' with 'plate a fish'
the bit that should be carved in concrete on the brain of anyone who loves beauty is the Ofra Haza sample/base line bit - I could listen to that forever.

jon, Wednesday, 21 August 2002 06:24 (twenty-three years ago)

now be fair, he rhymes "paper" with "tape of" and "plate of" (phonetically, it's more like "pape-uh", "tape-uh" and "plate-uh"), & "fish" with "dish"...

as I remember it the lines are something like "a pen and a paper, a stereo, a tape of/ Me and Eric B/ and a nice big plate of/ fish which is my favorite dish". I thought this line was the corniest thing of all time when I first heard it but it seems more and more genius as time goes on.

as far as the whole song goes, yeah it's classic - classic meaning "better in remembered fondly than it is in reality". I mean it is great and all, but about 3/4's of the way through I start to get bored.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 13:56 (twenty-three years ago)

but you've got seven minutes to get unbored.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 13:58 (twenty-three years ago)

i think it's quality, one of those tracks i heard on the radio late at night, and the more i heard of it,the more i wanted to know what it was, praying that the dj would announce it at the end,i'd never heard anything like it at the time (and this was probably about eight years after it came out...)

robin (robin), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 15:53 (twenty-three years ago)

Absolute Classic

The original was great, but it didn't have enough samples and changes.

Coldcut made it perfect.

Rob, Thursday, 22 August 2002 02:26 (twenty-three years ago)

something's funny about "didn't have enough samples"!!

ron (ron), Thursday, 22 August 2002 03:40 (twenty-three years ago)

The best rap I have ever heard. I think it was this song that got me into rap in the first place, way back when. I blame Public Enemy (circa "911 is a joke") for putting me off it totally a couple of years later.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 22 August 2002 03:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Has anybody else heard that Eric B hated it because he thought it sounded like "gay disco shit"?

vahid, Thursday, 22 August 2002 09:03 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah, this was discussed ages ago. and when they appeared on Top of the Pops to mime to the track i think it was the first time they'd heard the '7 Minutes of Madness' remix (which had been the hit in the UK) and they were looking pretty confused

michael (michael), Thursday, 22 August 2002 09:10 (twenty-three years ago)

president eric b has issued his decree/I think it's nice he agrees with me

bob zemko, Thursday, 22 August 2002 09:13 (twenty-three years ago)

that said I am young and wasn't there when it "came out" HOHO but I'd say it hasn't aged well at all. in fact it's pretty worthless

bob zemko, Thursday, 22 August 2002 09:17 (twenty-three years ago)

Right. But is this apocrypha or is there on-the-record shit talking by Eric B somewhere?

vahid, Thursday, 22 August 2002 09:19 (twenty-three years ago)

if only it sounded as good as 'gay disco shit'!!

simon trife (simon_tr), Thursday, 22 August 2002 15:24 (twenty-three years ago)

The original is actually kind of weak. Probably has something to do with Eric B's dislike of the superior remix. That and regular old hip-hip homophobia.

Ben Williams, Thursday, 22 August 2002 15:33 (twenty-three years ago)

one year passes...
revive. listening to this now as i create my 100 songs mix.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Some of you people are really lame...shit doesn't sound dated at all, especially when compared with a lot of the same stuff around that period...I played it at one of our house parties the other day, and a bunch of square white people were able to get down to it...its a classic beat, and I can't really see getting sick of it. I also don't know what "hip hop homophobia" ben williams is referring to...this joint is about getting paid. Classic.

I've heard a lot of theories on who actually produced the Eric B and Rakim albums - everyone from Marley Marl to Rakim himself have gotten credit.... Its pretty much assumed that Eric B was not the one to produce it...dude basically sold drugs and was an all-around thug who would protect Rakim and his set-up during shows.

But yeah, hating on this cut gets the gas face.

ddrake, Wednesday, 29 October 2003 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

the gasface. holy shit. MC Serch.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

dude basically sold drugs and was an all-around thug

no wonder they called him President

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

www.hiphopsite.com sells "Eric B for President" t-shirts.

ddrake, Wednesday, 29 October 2003 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

trife only hates on it because everybody else likes it = trife is even more indie rock than me

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyone here ever been told that Eric B didn't produce much of their output? Marley Marl and others were apparently the music heroes of their best work.

Barima (Barima), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

this is still my favorite hip hop song of all time. a close second is EPMD "Strictly Business"

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Liked the bit about leaving the track running while they go (home presumably) about 2 mins from the end...

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

EPMD is a subject for a whole nother thread...they rock my world.

Really, is there a band that gets more shoutouts in other band/artist's liner notes than EPMD?

ddrake, Wednesday, 29 October 2003 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

start up an EPMD thread.

Chris V. (Chris V), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Re: original question- Classic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But I still prefer the original "Journey Into Sound" test gramophone myself!!!!

Old Fart!!! (oldfart_sd), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 16:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Of course it's ridiculously awesome. That bassline! *swoons*

Nick H, Wednesday, 29 October 2003 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic beyond dispute. It's on my disc for Nate's challenge as well...

M Specktor (M Specktor), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Could somebody please tell me where that "doo-doo-doo-doo-doo" sample is from? You know, the one right after "This is a journey into sound"? Beck also sampled it on "The New Pollution."

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

two years pass...
definitly a classic
the original paid in full is also a classic

ashley shey (stillearning), Sunday, 16 July 2006 02:43 (nineteen years ago)

Yes. I heard it again about a month and a half ago after not having heard it for many years. But I think it's the Coldcut remix I heard...?

Anyway that was truly a monumental moment in musical history when Eric B. & Rakim's Paid In Full came out, I mean I am serious, that was a milestone. What year was that? '88 dare I guess? Later than that? Too drunk to look it up just now. But yeah, I had the feeling the first time I heard that that I was hearing something very important, even if I already had the whole album of the sample they used from Ofra Haza as part of the song.

I Don't Believe in Bacteria (Bimble...), Sunday, 16 July 2006 03:19 (nineteen years ago)

It beats M.A.R.S. "Pump Up The Volume" okay?

Ah I see, how predictable.

I Don't Believe in Bacteria (Bimble...), Sunday, 16 July 2006 18:07 (nineteen years ago)

Which came out first, this or "Pump Up The Volume"?

It's Rodney, currently unemployed! (R. J. Greene), Sunday, 16 July 2006 21:03 (nineteen years ago)

From allmusic:

Moreover, Rakim's line "pump up the volume" on the latter track was in turn sampled itself, becoming the basis for M/A/R/R/S' hit of the same name.

I Don't Believe in Bacteria (Bimble...), Monday, 17 July 2006 04:49 (nineteen years ago)

The line "pump up the volume" is from "I Know You Got Soul" which was released well before "Seven Minutes Of Madness", so that doesn't really prove anything.

It's Rodney, currently unemployed! (R. J. Greene), Monday, 17 July 2006 05:40 (nineteen years ago)

total classic

I must be one of the only people who thinks all that Coldcut stuff clutters this classic.
