romy's most...focused pop/dancefloor-friendly vocal yet? it's so good to hear her in this mode.

lex lex lex lex lex on the track BOW (lex pretend), Sunday, 12 December 2010 19:11 (fourteen years ago)

Her voice suits this vibe, yeah. Not sure if you could actually play it (the original) at a club night though.

Darren Huckerby (Dwight Yorke), Sunday, 12 December 2010 19:20 (fourteen years ago)

both are great, like the original better tho

the deadboy remix is p good but overall this is just like *fine* seems a bit much having a thread for it. u have had good one track threads b4 like that ****tangled up one and mindreader but man if this isnt some shark jumping.

plax (ico), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 23:03 (fourteen years ago)

The Azari & III remix is the best, it keeps what's good about the original (vocals, swirly portentous synth noises) and chucks what's wrong with it (badly reappropriated Southern rap drum sounds - when will people learn these don't make for good dance music?)

Matt DC, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 23:03 (fourteen years ago)

i don't think of the original as really oriented toward the dancefloor though?

opeth winfrey (donna rouge), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 23:08 (fourteen years ago)

plax i am really not into reading you telling me what i should and shouldn't post everywhere. or tbh engaging with you at all right now, cuz you're being a bit of a dick. stfu.

lextasy refix (lex pretend), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 23:09 (fourteen years ago)

i don't think of the original as really oriented toward the dancefloor though?

yeah it's...dancefloor-ready, i'd put it, like "night air" - all the ingredients are there to make it a dance track, but it's not one itself

lextasy refix (lex pretend), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 23:10 (fourteen years ago)

They're both up there with, say, Archangel, if you played them about 6am in the middle of a load of late night minimal they'd sound amazing. At peak time, probably not.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 23:23 (fourteen years ago)

haha i really like yr post abt hearing arcangel at the peak of like a marcel dettman set or smthg

plax (ico), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 23:24 (fourteen years ago)

It was Ripperton I think and the set was really super dry and skeletal so it felt like a celebratory anthem in that context.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 26 January 2011 23:26 (fourteen years ago)

yeah lol idk i just really liked that story, it totally vibed w/ experiences ive had. p sure i used to illustrate a point in a conversation once.

plax (ico), Wednesday, 26 January 2011 23:27 (fourteen years ago)

I heard someone at a house party once mix it into the Quarion/Jamie Lloyd remix and it was genuinely incredible, the two tracks chimed so well.

"Vertigo" is great! I don't know the vocalist at all, but a) I have to remedy that now because b) she sounds like Marianne Faithfull circa Broken English. There's a short "intro" track with Planningtorock on their Soundcloud too. I can't wait for the album even if we've already heard most of it by now...

emo canon in twee major (BradNelson), Wednesday, 13 November 2013 15:44 (eleven years ago)

lex pretend, Wednesday, 13 November 2013 15:48 (eleven years ago)

the album has been posted in the xbox music catalogue.
so, clearly someone is working on getting this out and available.
apparently i have clicked a button in the xbox music application that means i now have this available in the cloud.
no idea if that means i am limited to the number of plays ..
however, f*ck all that boring crap, this album is hitting many of my sweet spots.

mark e, Thursday, 14 November 2013 19:44 (eleven years ago)

so, clearly someone is working on getting this out and available.

not really, that happens pretty much 'automatically' if you're going through a digital distributor, who pushes it out to a million digital music outlets (from iTunes to weird Russian streaming sites).

i wasn't familiar with Xbox Music but i just checked and my records are there, so.

festival culture (Jordan), Thursday, 14 November 2013 20:43 (eleven years ago)

I just finally bought the damn thing on iTunes. It's a really well-sequenced record, isn't it? To me it feels like it gains tremendously from being laid out as a full-length rather than a set of one-off singles

CAROUSEL! CAROUSEL! (Telephone thing), Thursday, 14 November 2013 21:26 (eleven years ago)

I think this improves as it goes along but really takes off with 'Days'. They're generally dependent on the quality of the songwriter/vocalist they're working with. The whole thing *sounds* amazing but they work so much better with vocalists who provide a bit of contrast to the gothiness - Nina Sky, Romy, whoever Dark Sister are, even Sia. The Lou Rhodes track feels thuddingly predictable by comparison.

Matt DC, Friday, 15 November 2013 09:42 (eleven years ago)

'Vertigo' is my cut from this.

never got to hear this album properly.
i have never seen a cd copy of this ever.
however, it appears that they are available via the usual places (albeit very expensive : £30 on amazon !), so i guess it was released.
i guess there was not a lot of push behind it, or, the label pulled it from having a full release ?

mark e, Thursday, 11 February 2016 22:26 (nine years ago)

Half was released as singles over 4 years, so the album itself was anticlimactic. An issue with a lot of debut albums this decade.

Lurkers of the world, unite! (Sanpaku), Thursday, 11 February 2016 23:10 (nine years ago)

cd arrived yesterday (not £30 via amazon !)
it is, as has been said, bloody fantastic.
would love to know how this album got so lost.
did the girls just call it quits and pull back from the needs of the promotional chaos, or was it that the label just lost interest ??
there has to be a story for such a wonderful album that features so many big names on it to disappear like this.
