The bits where the hands grab the legs is really unnerving. Awesome video clip, but yeah, kinda wrong.

it's kinda misogynist, somehow in an old-fashioned way? the ol' 'i love women and that's why 75% of them are topless and all of them are playin sexy and that's basically what they're here for' game.

Nudity is a definite thing this year for indie vids, cf. No Joy's "Hawaii" and Yuck's "Fur", lotsa others. Rip Van Wanko gives his blessing to this new trend.

Nudity has been very trendy in indie-videos for the past 2-3 years.

I dunno this video is pretty silly and it looks like everyone involved is having a lot of fun. There are a couple WTF moments for sure (the choloroforming thing...) but I don't know...

Is 'girls doing silly shit while nude' inherently misogynistic or demeaning to them? My gut reaction is 'no'... but I'm a guy, I'm far more interested to know if the ladies in the audience think it crossed a line.

Okay it's "silly" but it's also beautifully shot and very well put together..

Um, yeah, wow. I love El Guincho and think the video is really well put together, but... I dunno, the aesthetics are really appealing, and of course there's nothing inherently misogynist about nudity, but if you don't see the very regressive imagery then you must either be blind or trolling. Not gonna rag on anyone for liking it, though - many many things in this world have been simultaneously wonderful and politically dodgy.

My mistake, there's no full frontal in "Bombay" .. just lots of shirtless ladies.

this is basically the result of trying to channel Bunuel and Jodorowsky simultaneously but with more boobs

Bunuel was subtle and classy on a whole other level and Jodorowsky had more style - other than that, passable, albeit male-violent-psychosexual-fantasy oriented

about 1/4 of it was legitimately rad - usually, the bits without boobs or guns (panda execution exempt)

in the comments there are 3 Jodorowsky shout-outs and one Bunuel. once more Jagger taps the hivemind (also the nature of the imagery owes some pretty blatant debts - at least the guy's got taste)

Yeah, you can see the influences, but if you go down that route of comparison then it actually becomes less okay rather than more, as it just doesn't hold its own against those guys.

If its the nudity, which I suppose could seem like exploitation to other cultures you must remember Guincho and director Nicolas Mendez are both from Spain and seeing topless women around spanish coasts is much more common than you think and there's nothing morbid or extraordinary about it. Male and Female nudity is legal in Barcelona.

All of Nicolas Mendez work I've seen explores the same sort of themes, fixed about capturing the joys and difficulties of adolescence. So no, I don't think he's trying to channel any sort of male fantasy.

At least in Bombay the Jodorowsky influence is more subtle; which shots would these be? The only thing i can really think of is the aerial view of the people walking in that X formation.

The "Time to Pretend" video basically just recreated 2/3 Holy Mountain scenes, this is much more creative.

yeah, i dunno, it's not so much an unflattering comparison as it is an acknowledgment of obvious influence. doesn't take anything away from the video in my mind. anyway, i do like the clip, and while the imagery is questionable at times, the whole is too self-aware, nostalgically referential and playful to seem legitimately misogynist.

Oh wait, I just noticed that in the other video I posted there's a boy hitting a girl in her hands numerous times. I take it back, Nicolas Mendez is definitely mysoginistic.

watched it again and it's pretty cool although some of it doesn't do enough with the sexualisation - boobs on their own or with sparklers aren't going to challenge anyone (although they might titillate)

and some of the imagery is made of stock surrealist tropes - arm coming from wall is oldest trick in the book iirc

i think the video this director did for scissor sisters is more problematic...

i mean, i like the videos (esp the bombay one) on a certain level but im not willing to do any backwards rationalizations for them as not being sexist or whatever.

did you see the scissor sisters video linked above? this guy has one shtick. would have been better all around if he had just did the bombay video and then disappeared. he's the hype williams of indie music videos atm.

just watched the scissor sisters one and feel like it's actually evidence that he's NOT a one trick pony. for starters, it has more of a narrative and a def has it's own aesthetic whereas the battles one sort of feels like trying to duplicate the el guincho one.

that said i really like all three.

watched it a few more times and noticed that the "random" shots I wrote off as derivative in the first minutes are all kind of connected and purposeful and not random at all. also love how the random objects shown from 1:00 - 1:16 all get combined to form ice-cream cone shapes from 1:16-1:34
