not familiar with She's A Beauty until just now, great introduction but then it sags a little. or rather, it's all over the place--too many ideas with too little relation to each other and some weird chord progressions. feels like three songs in one and none of them is all that good.

Haha, yeah, that's The Tubes trying to channel their Zappa-esque prog-ness into a hit single. Still amazed they pulled it off.

I always found the main riff to Centerfold (the sort of sea shanty/Irish jig thing) really irritating. Catchy, but irritating.

There's no "I'm indifferent to both" option because I feel that the songs are neither bad nor good but they've been played to death. I rarely pay attention to either anymore because they're a staple of most Classic Rock playlists.

My write-in candidate is Gary Myrick's "Model".

Defend the Indefensible: "She's a Beauty" by The Tubes

Stop Non-Erotic Cabaret (Abbbottt), Sunday, 19 December 2010 18:38 (fourteen years ago)

"Centerfold" is worse, I think, but only because of the "na na na" earworm riff. Is that some kind of electric whistle or something playing along with it? I do like the line "my memory has just been sold" and I would appreciate if anyone could take a stab at what it means in the context of the song, because it is currently a koan to me.

worst line:

"But it will cost you
a dol-lar first"

so dumb and clumsy

Centerfold is a much better song imo, mainly for a great chorus. Lots of energy. And the na na na's. Although I found it sort of repellant as an innocent bible belt kid.

My high school debate team liked to sing the "na na na" riff on bus trips to debate competition. Anything that reminds me of high school debate is basically bad.

Since the song is about seeing a girl he had a crush on as a kid in the centerfold of a girlie mag, maybe "my memory has just been sold" just means he'll never never be able to think of her in that innocent schoolgirl context again? Reading the lyrics, they're kinda funny and sweet and not nearly as salacious as I remember. Funny last line.

The na na nah nah nah in Centerfold sounds like the Smurf song.
