Alright, ILM, time to 'fess up. Which new releases did you buy in 2010 that you later (or immediately) realized were a waste of your hard-earned dollars? Consider this ILM's anti-year's end poll -- a necessary counterpoint to the madness going on elsewhere.
I'll admit to buying these on release day:
Gorillaz - Plastic Beach (much as I love my old Blur records, this is no substitute... cloying "eclecticism")Interpol - Interpol (why why whyyyy did I think this would be any good when Interpol has been awful since 2004 or so?)Katy Perry - Teenage Dream (turns out the singles are the only valuable tracks on here... who would've thought?)
Your turn. Let's keep this lighthearted and honest. GO!

Apples in Stereo - still haven't opened the shrinkwrap on this one after initially liking the leaked mp3sM.I.A. - Maya - bought out of force of habit, just not a good listenLCD Soundsystem - bought this one twice by accident and it would cost almost as much to return as it was to buy. There's a joke in there somewhere.

The Daft Punk TRON: Legacy OST (I knew this was going to be soundtracky and not a new Daft Punk album, but didn't realize just how much it was going to rely on bog-standard orchestral scores - should've just downloaded the couple good Daft Punk-y tracks and not paid for the whole thing)Lil Wayne - Rebirth (knew it was going to be a trainwreck, but I was hoping for an entertaining trainwreck)Keane - Night Train (I know, I know! But I was riding high on a K'naan buzz at the time, saw this ultra-cheap, and bought it for him)Hole - Nobody's Daughter (should have listened to ILM and stuck with the downloaded Courtney version)Fistful of Mercy - As I Call You Down (as much as I love Joseph Arthur, it wasn't worth putting up with so much half-assed Ben Harper and Dhani Harrison)

Lil Wayne - Rebirth (knew it was going to be a trainwreck, but I was hoping for an entertaining trainwreck)
plz add this one to my list -- yes, it is as awful as advertised. i even bought the "deluxe edition" w/ two bonus tracks. super FAIL :(

I've been a lot better at trying before I buy, tbh

Ooh, can I add The Five Ghosts by Stars? I think I can be forgiven for this one, given their usual high level of quality, but this one just plain sucked.

yup that interpol was shit.

add to my list:
MGMT - Congratulations (advance press = "difficult" second album; i think "hmmm this could be really interesting!" and plunk down $7.99 or so on release day; ~listening~: "OMG this album is awful what was i thinking")
― i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Wednesday, 15 December 2010 16:49 (fourteen years ago)
haha. ^^^ yup.

i also reaaaally liked the cover art & was intrigued by the Sonic Boom association (didn't he produce or something?)

Umm he produced some of the best music of all time. Spacemen 3, ever heard of em? Check 'em out.
― FLEETWOOD MAC OS THE XX FILES (diamonddave85), Wednesday, 15 December 2010 16:59 (fourteen years ago)
lol, i'm well aware thanks. to clarify, i'm a huge spacemen 3 / sonic boom / spectrum / e.a.r. fan, so was intrigued by the MGMT record in part because sonic himself produced(?), or had some hand in making, the album
― i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Wednesday, 15 December 2010 17:02 (fourteen years ago)
from wikipedia:
MGMT's Congratulations was released on April 13, 2010. The band, including Matthew Asti, James Richardson, and Will Berman from the live band, spent the summer of 2009 in Malibu, California, recording the album with Pete Kember (a.k.a. Sonic Boom) — formerly of Spacemen 3 and Spectrum — serving as producer/guru, and long-time friend, Billy Bennett, as engineer.

Reflection Eternal - Revolutions per Minute (was crossing my fingers for even a glimpse of the chemistry that Talib Kweli and Hi-Tek had on their masterwork collaboration a decade ago; unfortunately, they both phoned it in)

Pre-ordered the new Atheist album Jupiter, got a wannabe Dillinger Escape Plan disc in the mail instead.

still haven't opened the shrinkwrap on this one after initially liking the leaked mp3s
this is me on like every new CD I buy (tho I still do listen to the mp3s)
― Dominique, Wednesday, 15 December 2010 17:09 (fourteen years ago)
I liked that Atheist album, but I also like DEP alot too.
That Reflection Eternal wasn't awful, there were a few flashes of style, but, yeah, can't even carry the water for their last release together.

Nas & Damian Marley - Distant Relatives (was immensely excited when "As We Enter" hit my ears, it was fantastic, fresh, and I wanted the album to play off this rapid-fire, trading lines back & forth style; sadly, the rest of the album sounds nothing like "As We Enter")

When I look in the 'purchased' sub-section of my iTunes library, I'm occasionally SHOCKED by things I've apparently bought on a variant of impulse that's even more reckless and sudden than the usual variety. I've also bought a couple of things drunk, which is humiliating.
― She Got the Shakes, Wednesday, 15 December 2010 17:50 (fourteen years ago)
oh the drunk itunes buys are wonderful.

Barnes&Noble.com takes Paypal, so I'll occasionally make an impulse purchase of physical CDs. I'm usually still happy about 'em when they show up a week later, though.

Autolux - Transit Transit (good resume? check [Failure was awesome, first Autolux album surprisingly good]; good label? check [ATP usually has great quality control]; awesome live show? check [the new songs sounded awesome at ATP NY 2009]; new album? utterly tuneless & forgettable)
― i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Wednesday, 15 December 2010 18:02 (fourteen years ago)
I'm pretty selective about what I actually pay $$$ for these days, so far everything new I've bought this year - LCD Soundsystem, Black Angels, Juan Maclean, Vampire Weekend - has been pretty reliably great.

That phoned in bullshit that Gil Scott Heron put out this year, write some songs feller.
― Pottery Owls (MaresNest), Wednesday, 15 December 2010 18:25 (fourteen years ago)
Thats your own fault for paying for a Stone Sour record, but maybe you ought to give The Sword another go - it took some time to grow on me, but now I love it.

Hard to write songs when you can't put down the crack pipe. The hype for his album was just mind boggling. I tried hard to get into it but it was pretty poor.

Shakey, you actually liked the Black Angels' new one? i thought their strength was long fuzzy psych jams; didn't really "get" the new album once they cut the song lengths down and tried to write better hooks O_o
― i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Wednesday, 15 December 2010 18:43 (fourteen years ago)
Its a totally different vibe for the Black Angels, but I like it, I don't think they could've kept my interest if they'd kept on in the same direction as the first two.
― one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 15 December 2010 18:43 (fourteen years ago)
oh i regret paying for the black keys new one.

"1970's Algerian Proto-Rai"(Sublime Frequencies) : an ok bunch of tracks - nothing glaringly special to these ears - until the very last song, which is this glorious psychedelic swirl of Rai and buzzy electric guitar. Makes every track before it eat dust.

having never heard a note of the Black Angels' music before (seriously, I bought it entirely based on the sleeve design) I was not disappointed, no.

like the Wooden Shjips only with shorter, more concise song structures.
what does annoy me about the album is that it did not come with MP3s. and I can't find anywhere to download it for free.

you should seek out all three albums for the sleeves, then --

def agree that the last track puts everything else in the shade, but this is a pretty fun listen throughout. plus, you could probably make a profit if you sold it.
