Oasis: When did you get off the bus?

Message Bookmarked

Oasis were the band that promised to storm the barricades. One week in the chart at number 23 was not good enough anymore. So, we all had to sign up, and not since the days of the Beatles heyday was there a band that placed themselves so central that other contemporary bands would define themselves by means of the differences between them and Oasis.

Of course, by the time they were done, One week in the chart at number 23 was not available anymore.

(Was going to drop live/compilations, but heck...)

The bus has an annoying hairy man on it and stinks of piss and shit. I'll get the next one.

just yesterday i got into a summary discush in with a tibetan monk about the chord progression of 'some might say'

not since the days of the Beatles heyday was there a band that placed themselves so central that other contemporary bands would define themselves by means of the differences between them and Oasis.

this seems... somewhere between reductive and just not true

I think there was a point maybe where any British band big enough to get, say, a page feature in the NME would be seen to 'have an opinion' on Oasis, but only because they'd inevitably get asked about it

Different Geir, Still SBing (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 16 December 2010 10:41 (fourteen years ago)

Passing interest during my teens for the first two albums. I actually remember kind of liking a number of songs off What's The Story (before the singles were being played on heavy rotation absolutely everywhere. Then I realised my silliness, and thankfully asked the driver to pull over two stops before Be Here Now.

These days the only song I don't skip when it comes up on shuffle is Slide Away. Still love that song, the best thing they ever did.

nate woolls, Thursday, 16 December 2010 12:32 (fourteen years ago)

Heard the single 'Supersonic', thought it wasn't too bad (if a bit derivative), then saw them on TV and realised they were tossers.

Les centimètres énigmatiques (snoball), Thursday, 16 December 2010 12:33 (fourteen years ago)

I somewhat stopped having faith in them around "Heathen Chemistry". Still some nice songs, but it seemed Noel Gallagher was running out of them to a larger extent. Been buying everything and all, and I actually thought "Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants" was much better than its reputation, but the more recent stuff "rocks" too much and has too few of those anthemic ballads they are so great at.

"Whatever" was a single. It's on the Masterplan.

Mark G, Thursday, 16 December 2010 13:16 (fourteen years ago)

Didn't it come out between What's The Story and Be Here Now though? Because that's specifically the point where I lost interest.

nate woolls, Thursday, 16 December 2010 13:21 (fourteen years ago)

it came out between definitely maybe and what's the story. Christmas single it was.

Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Thursday, 16 December 2010 13:22 (fourteen years ago)

Oh no, I just checked Wiki and I'm completely wrong.

nate woolls, Thursday, 16 December 2010 13:22 (fourteen years ago)

The Masterplan did, though.

Mark G, Thursday, 16 December 2010 13:33 (fourteen years ago)

The Masterplan rounded up the last of Noel Gallagher's initial batch of songs and it was all downhill from there. It must be a weird experience to write all your best, most loved songs on the way up (1991-5) and then suddenly find yourself with your pockets empty just as expectations kick in.

The baby boomers have defined everything once and for all (Dorianlynskey), Thursday, 16 December 2010 13:47 (fourteen years ago)

It's weird that pretty much everyone rates the first album above the second one yet it still only has half as many sales. You'd think the people who went nuts over Morning Glory and packed out Knebworth etc would go back and buy the first album.

No 'sic' required. Giants are quite large, therefore it should be possible to stand on one shoulder quite comfortably. Maybe even a whole band.

I kind of liked them on the first album, they had this barrage of noise thing that was sort of viscerally thrilling if you turned it up loud enough, sort of like Slade, but not as good. Everything I heard by them from the second album onwards has this leaden stodgy half-assed awfulness about it that I cannot stand to listen to, really they are a monument to second-rateness in every way.

I would have loved it if they'd got their asses sued off for one of their many musical steals, dunno why that never happened.

I'm pretty sure they didn't just willingly give credit to Leander on Hello and Wonder's writing team on Step Out out of the goodness of their hearts. it may not have gone to court, but I'm sure legal action was threatened/initiated.

from the lowly milligeir to the mighty gigahongro (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 16 December 2010 19:58 (fourteen years ago)

I'm sure they copped to Hello in advance, probably at Sony's urging. I'd forgotten about Step Out. Wikipedia (from John Harris's book):

"One song, "Step Out", bore such a close resemblance to the song "Uptight (Everything's Alright)" by Stevie Wonder that it was removed from the album shortly before release due to the threat of legal action"
