Saddest rap song

What is it? I can only think of two rap songs that have affected me emotionally-- "All That I Got is You" by Ghostface Killah, and "Changes" by 2Pac. What have I missed?

I'll prob get a few zings for this, but "Dry Your Eyes"?

"All That I Got is You" definitely a contender

I think it kinda even gets to my wife, which is rare for a rap song... otoh it came on in the car the other day and when it got to the 5 Percent bit at the end she was like "why is this guy laughing?" Which is true, it's oddly incongruous.

it's words of wisdom from a sagacious mystic who understands that our trials and tribulations are only a tiny part of a cosmic play. i guess that's pretty funny.

you and me were best friends, we talked about abortions
as little girls, hair braided on the same porches
we promised each we would share the same losses
your babydaddy passed, we shared the same losses

it's disappointing that you fell off - well, not fell off
i just can't accept you not being well off
it wouldn't be me if i didn't tell all
i even tried to call you but your cell off...

I always thought De La Soul did melancholy really well... "I Am I Be," "Pass The Plugs," "Held Down," "Trying People." Those songs are all so achy.

they reminisce over you

classic song and even better cuz it's so subtle and the sadness is allowed to kind of seep in around the edges of the track, the lyrics are a little more diffuse and fractured storytelling and less straight emotional than say a tupac style sad jam but there's this overall feeling of melancholy...and they let the music evoke the feelings too instead of filling in all the dots for you....

the saddest rap song is probably that one that the piano guy from the style council sang on the first style council album. can't remember the title.

how do want it to be sad? what are the emotional and musical signifiers of the saddest hiphop you can think of?

yeah good riddance

Millie is a pretty sad song

from the lowly milligeir to the mighty gigahongro (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 16 December 2010 19:44 (fifteen years ago)

i almost didn't want to answer this question, after reading it so late and there already being so many other good examples, but i might as well. 't.r.o.y.' and 'millie pulled a pistol on santa' are just wonderful. both'll get me misty-eyed whenever i listen to them. that piano bit on 'millie' is devastating. and the wu stuff is true, there's never a time when they aren't being emotional, and half the time it's wistfulness. what more could you ask for?

do u think maybe the plethora of threads in the interim, plus the ignorant nature of the premise in the first place, informed the second comment? could it be????

zvookster, Thursday, 16 December 2010 19:53 (fifteen years ago)

I can only think of two jazz songs that have affected me emotionally - "So What" by Miles Davis, and "My Favorite Things" by John Coltrane. What have I missed?

zvookster, Thursday, 16 December 2010 19:59 (fifteen years ago)

well Geir never changes his name.

ethan always made it abundantly clear that he hated me, so that one was also usually pretty simple. I wasn't here when he was posting with his own name though.

from the lowly milligeir to the mighty gigahongro (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 16 December 2010 20:01 (fifteen years ago)

The premise of all questions is ignorance. ILX will likely be around another 10 years, and someone will ask the same question then, and that will be... okay. Why waste energy pretending otherwise?

Pete Scholtes, Thursday, 16 December 2010 20:18 (fifteen years ago)

hi pete, <3 ur stuff for city pages. symsymsym's last post gets at it imo tho i would've used "indie". plus trife had to basically change the subject and call out that something fishy was going on with this.

zvookster, Thursday, 16 December 2010 20:22 (fifteen years ago)

fishy? like a conspiracy to promote De La Soul and Aesop Rock?

sounds diabolical

from the lowly milligeir to the mighty gigahongro (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 16 December 2010 20:24 (fifteen years ago)
