Lil' Freak, even with one point deducted for "EVERYBODY LOVES RAYMOND!"

Tim F, Thursday, 16 December 2010 23:11 (fifteen years ago)

Haven't heard "Hot Tottie."

I'll walk around the office at least once a week shouting "PAY-PAHS. PAY-PAHS."

Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 16 December 2010 23:11 (fifteen years ago)

i don't even really think "papers" sounds like "burn" (this is a bad thing)

dirty *plop* (The Reverend), Thursday, 16 December 2010 23:12 (fifteen years ago)

haha

"hot tottie" is awesome! i think i'm voting for it

haven't heard "more"

return of the nakh (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 16 December 2010 23:12 (fifteen years ago)

"papers" certainly never struck me as a rewrite of "burn" nearly as much as "burn" does of "u got it bad"

dirty *plop* (The Reverend), Thursday, 16 December 2010 23:13 (fifteen years ago)

"Papers" and "Burn" are both "U Got It Bad" ripoffs and "Papers" is the better one

ha xpost

some dude, Thursday, 16 December 2010 23:13 (fifteen years ago)

i haven't heard "more". i'm voting for "dj got us falling in love" but i'm not proud of it.

Rev otm.

Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 16 December 2010 23:14 (fifteen years ago)

"papers" just doesn't work for me as a song at all.

dirty *plop* (The Reverend), Thursday, 16 December 2010 23:14 (fifteen years ago)

imo:
papers > hot tottie > lil freak > there goes my baby > omg > dj > hey daddy

some dude, Thursday, 16 December 2010 23:15 (fifteen years ago)

dj > tottie > there goes my baby > hey daddy > lil freak > omg > papers

dirty *plop* (The Reverend), Thursday, 16 December 2010 23:17 (fifteen years ago)

"hot tottie" has prob the best jay verse of the year & maybe even of the past two year? he actually managed to recapture that balance of sneering dickishness & irresistible charm that made him so awesome on songs like "i just wanna luv u" & "frontin"

return of the nakh (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 16 December 2010 23:17 (fifteen years ago)

the fact that he sounds kind of like a shit trey songz on "hot tottie" pains me more than any of the songs i dislike more

dirty *plop* (The Reverend), Thursday, 16 December 2010 23:17 (fifteen years ago)

he = usher obv

dirty *plop* (The Reverend), Thursday, 16 December 2010 23:18 (fifteen years ago)

lil freak >> hot tottie >> papers >>>>>>>>>>> omg > dj got us falling in love again

don't even remember the other two

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Thursday, 16 December 2010 23:18 (fifteen years ago)

really don't get the bfd about "lil freak" -- it's not even a great beat by polow's standards & has one of the worst minaj verses

altho come to think of it, that song's existence is completely justified by the story that shiplo told about big tigger thinking nicki said "everybody loves reindeer" which is the funniest thing i've ever heard

return of the nakh (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 16 December 2010 23:22 (fifteen years ago)

lol totally, that may be part of my enjoyment of it.

some dude, Thursday, 16 December 2010 23:22 (fifteen years ago)

although as post-peak polow goes it's not bad, and i'm always a sucker for that "living for the city" riff in any form. but it is kind of funny that it's this year's annual R&B song tom breihan reps for.

some dude, Thursday, 16 December 2010 23:23 (fifteen years ago)

"lil freak" is one of those odd times i get pissed off at someone for sampling something great and shitting on it

dirty *plop* (The Reverend), Thursday, 16 December 2010 23:24 (fifteen years ago)

haha xp

dirty *plop* (The Reverend), Thursday, 16 December 2010 23:24 (fifteen years ago)

anyway my rankings would be

hot tottie > omg > dj got us falling in love again > papers (stop liking songs) there goes my baby > lil freak > hey daddy (daddy's home) (creepiest song of the year?)

return of the nakh (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 16 December 2010 23:24 (fifteen years ago)

yeah this was bizarre

return of the nakh (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 16 December 2010 23:25 (fifteen years ago)

as much as people put pitchfork's rap coverage under the microscope, the R&B coverage is way spottier and more questionable. "hey guys! lil freak! only girl in the world! right, right?"

some dude, Thursday, 16 December 2010 23:27 (fifteen years ago)

really don't get the bfd about "lil freak"

best of this pretty lamentable selection ≠ bfd

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Thursday, 16 December 2010 23:29 (fifteen years ago)

hey, they reviewed some random unofficial ciara mixtape that some random DJ put together! that's crate digging!

return of the nakh (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 16 December 2010 23:30 (fifteen years ago)

wonder if they'll review the actual ciara album now.

some dude, Thursday, 16 December 2010 23:34 (fifteen years ago)

"DJ Got Us..."

Zsa Zsa Gay Bar (jaymc), Thursday, 16 December 2010 23:38 (fifteen years ago)

dude's been breaking my heart ever since America broke his by ignoring Here I Stand

da croupier, Thursday, 16 December 2010 23:40 (fifteen years ago)

actually a really hard decision. it's probably between "papers" and "lil freak" as they both are departures from usher's normal output that work really well. "hey daddy" used to be one of my favorites but if you actually listen to the lyrics it kind of ruins it (not a flattering image for him)

i'm serious as cancer, when i peruse ilx new answers (chilli), Friday, 17 December 2010 00:01 (fifteen years ago)

I probably like "Lil Freak" more than it would otherwise merit because it sounds so non-2010, that kind of brooding bounciness it has reminds me of, like, LeToya's "All Eyes on Me" or similar. And I like the way it seems to be more about his bi girl's enjoyment than you'd expect from a minaj-a-tois plotline in a rap or r&b tune.

The Nicki verse is good I reckon apart from the last line.

Just made a similar playlist a couple weeks back. trimmed it to 80 minutes, left out some jams.
