Dunno what I'm voting for, but these are standouts in order of pref:

Little By Little
Somebody
Tonight She Comes
Fortress Around Your Heart
Lonely Ol' Night
Talk To Me

Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 17 December 2010 00:31 (fifteen years ago)

A horrid selection (the overall list).

_Rudipherous_, Friday, 17 December 2010 00:33 (fifteen years ago)

god help me i'm voting for Mike & The Mechanics

some dude, Friday, 17 December 2010 00:35 (fifteen years ago)

Just the opposite for me. I love quite a few of these.

I'm leaning towards "I Want to Know What Love Is" because I'm nothing if not a big sappity sap, but it could be several others on different days.

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Friday, 17 December 2010 00:36 (fifteen years ago)

fuckin Starship

jerkstore cowboy (Pillbox), Friday, 17 December 2010 00:37 (fifteen years ago)

I believe they headlined a gig at my hometown's county fair that year.

jerkstore cowboy (Pillbox), Friday, 17 December 2010 00:38 (fifteen years ago)

"Lonely Ol' Night" is my choice, good tough groove & though lyrically it's fair to say it's a Springsteen rip, the "custom-made" line has a nice ring for a Rust Belt artist.

Euler, Friday, 17 December 2010 00:51 (fifteen years ago)

Forgot "I Want to Know What Love Is."

Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 17 December 2010 00:51 (fifteen years ago)

Picked The Cars, just ahead of Mike + The Mechanics. Not among the best tracks on the otherwise great "Heartbeat City" album though.

You're Twistin' My Melody Man! (Geir Hongro), Friday, 17 December 2010 00:59 (fifteen years ago)

That's b/c it's on Heartbeat City -- it's a new track on their Greatest Hits.

Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 17 December 2010 01:00 (fifteen years ago)

*NOT on HC

Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 17 December 2010 01:00 (fifteen years ago)

I like almost all of these songs except Mike + The Mechanics and Huey. Springsteen brought "Trapped" back into his sets a year or two ago.

Surprised there's no "One More Night" or "Obsession."

There could've an alternate poll for best video, since all of these had a big-production one.

Surprised there's no "One More Night" or "Obsession."

"Obsession" was by no means considered rock in 1985. It was synthpop even though the album it was taken from may have been closer to rock.

You're Twistin' My Melody Man! (Geir Hongro), Friday, 17 December 2010 01:09 (fifteen years ago)

And I guess ballads didn't quality either, thus no "One More Night"

You're Twistin' My Melody Man! (Geir Hongro), Friday, 17 December 2010 01:10 (fifteen years ago)

Man, if this is about who rocks the most, I'll give it to Stevie Nicks.

I like "Talk To Me" in spite of how awful Nicks sounds; you can hear the coke rattling around her sinuses. I think she actually shouts IZN'T MY GAH WAAAAHL IZNT DAT EEEENUUUF

Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 17 December 2010 01:19 (fifteen years ago)

Jesus Christ I just voted for "sleeping bag" in a songs poll

O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Friday, 17 December 2010 01:42 (fifteen years ago)

Was going to say that nothing else here comes close to "I Want to Know What Love Is," though I like lots of the others (Plant, Adams, Cafferty, Dire Straits, Mellencamp, Cars, ZZ Top) okay. Then I noticed "Trapped" up there, and voted for it. (Assume that's the version from We Are The Word -- if another version exists, I've never heard it.)

xhuxk, Friday, 17 December 2010 01:46 (fifteen years ago)

Plant over the Firm.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 17 December 2010 02:10 (fifteen years ago)

Hell with it, I'm voting for the one I liked best in 1985 and that is "We Built this City." Still prefer it to all but four or five of these.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Friday, 17 December 2010 02:19 (fifteen years ago)

I mean, just on the syllable-by-syllable level, "knee-deep in the hoopla" is a beautiful line. Surely that can't be denied.

Euler mentions the Springsteen rip of Lonely Ol Night, but can I just

buzza, Friday, 17 December 2010 02:27 (fifteen years ago)

by virtue of being forcibly tattooed into my brain for life, it has to be "i want to know what love is" vs. "don't you (forget about me)". i kind of hate the simple minds tune, and foreigner will always be fun to sing along with, so they take the crown.

thing is, there several songs here i'd rather hear than either of those two: "sleeping bag", "the old man down the road", "lonely ol' night", "you belong to the city". i can't say they're better than "i want to know what love is" (cuz they aren't), but at least they've got a bit of life left in them.

a man called hearse (contenderizer), Friday, 17 December 2010 04:25 (fifteen years ago)

the "Just Another Night" video is hilarious.

Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 19 December 2010 01:17 (fifteen years ago)

Lonely Ol' Night by a considerable margin. Ever listen to the drums on that song? Holy mackerel!

kornrulez6969, Sunday, 19 December 2010 01:58 (fifteen years ago)

God bless Kenny Aronoff.

musicfanatic, Sunday, 19 December 2010 07:56 (fifteen years ago)

Everything on here is shit except Huey Lewis.

Silent Running man.

when I was a kid I always thought the lyrics were "Can you hear me, can you hear me Rudy" (as in Rudy Huxtable, cuz I loved the Cosby show).

I was disappointed to learn the error of my ways but it is still a catchy tune

Bitch, it cold outside!!! BURR (San Te), Wednesday, 22 December 2010 01:45 (fifteen years ago)

Voted Fogerty. That was a pretty cool video and it may have been a gateway into my heavy CCR period.

i love you but i have chosen snarkness (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 22 December 2010 01:59 (fifteen years ago)

now if we're talking a 'worst of' these songs poll, I think Don Henley would have this one wrapped up
