A new board, a new chance to spread love...
We are not forming a canon here, just a nice friendly little chat by the fire or pool depending on how the weather was for you today...

Let me Set It Off with...
1. Derrick May - Mayday Mix. This album will convert those who have been turned off by the constant praise directed at this man. Many of these mixes are actually worthy of intense thought. For instance, there is a sequence where May mixes from a very fuzzy Detroit record (Convextion by Convextion) to this very pure, minimal and incredibly stark Basic Channel track. The mix is more like a chop, so your attention is really drawn to the contrast. If the "jack" element is subtle and submerged in the basic channel record, it is made explicit by his mixing of the vocals from "get down get horny" by Basement Jaxx.

2. Daniel Bell - The Button-Down Mind of... Perhaps one of the best single-disc introductions to the techno house sound, Bell begins with quirky records and slowly lets the emotions become more obvious. The classic mix is between the Herbert dub of High Life into Nick Holder's (unreleased I think) Feelin' Sad.

There are many other greats, but I think these are especially (dare I say) important, the first because it shows the full potential of spinning inna house stylee, and the second because most people still don't know what tech-house is, and are probably curious to hear it...

Oooh one quick request... the less of a list this is, the more everyone will be able to figure out if they are interested in something... of course, nobody has to write verbose and interminable dissertations, either.

me molestan mucho! hablan!

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Tuesday, 20 August 2002 23:08 (twenty-three years ago)

those are probably my favourites as well!
At the moment I am digging the first cd of Swayzaks Groovetechnology mix. There is hardly any actual mixing but it is..................good.

big E.D (big E.D), Tuesday, 20 August 2002 23:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Best bit in the mayday mix: trax 14 - 16 - tribal polyrythmic -> bonkers flanged train noises( a la Frankie Knuckles) -> backwards tribal stuff -> Jeff mills 'Alarm'.
Best bit in Button down mind of - the herbert, todd edwards remix sandwich.

big E.D (big E.D), Tuesday, 20 August 2002 23:41 (twenty-three years ago)

offa top of my head:

dj hype - live on kiss fm, 1993
matt herbert - let's all make mistakes
thomas brinkmann - live at sonar (2000, i think, but it might be 1999.)

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 00:01 (twenty-three years ago)

groovetechnology is good as a compilation. It would be interesting to hear some of the same tracks really mixed. Since I own some of these tracks, that means I have to get off of my lazy ass...

I should put in a mention of Kevin Saunderson's mix on Groovetech.com from London in 2001. My next thread will be me asking for help trainspotting one of those tracks...

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 00:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Buyable mix albums: Larry Levan's Live at the Paradise Garage (words fail), Claude Young's DJ Kicks (extremely underrated techno set), Michael Mayer's Immer (overall favorite tech-house mix), Dan Bell's The Button Down Mind of Dan Bell (second-favorite tech-house mix, though more eclectic than Mayer's), Danny Krivit's Grass Roots (mainly '70s funk and jazz), and pretty much everything Theo Parrish has self-released (wonderfully diverse and tech-y).

Online mixes: 2000 DEMF sets by Kenny Dixon Jr, Dego, and Shake (on groovetech.com), Dettinger's Mutek set (on mutek.ca), heaps of mixes on deephousepage.com from Ron Hardy, the Hot Mix 5, the Wizard, Knuckles, Tee Scott, Tony Humphries, Derrick May (his Music Institute set = guhhh....).

Andy K (Andy K), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 01:30 (twenty-three years ago)

lets not forget Danny Tenaglia's Athens Global U. set for having "frank sinatra" before the whole electroclash thing got trendy.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 01:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Jeff Mills Live At The Liquid Room

Hard banging ass techno from 96. This CD pretty much set the direction for techno for the next few years. Everybody act on it went on to international dance music stardom.

Mixed Up Hague by DJ I-F

This cd is Italio-Disco heaven and set a new direction in dance music. It is all old classics and a few tracks from Viewlexx records thrown in for good measure. Obviously, the sound is old, but he brought a lot of there records back from the grave for a lot of people. There would be no Electro-Clash trash without I-F. He was the man that DJ hell stole everything from, and Hell is still trying to bite his record collection.

My favorite mix of all time is Derrick May's set at the first DEMF. He was playing everything from house to having members of the Last Poets come on to do spoken word. There has only been one occasion where I have actually cried during a DJ set, and it was that night. The man is praised to death because he deserves it. Now if only he would get off his ass and make some new records. ;)

Also, Convexion by Convexion is not a Detroit record. It was released on Sean Deason's Matrix label, but Convexion is not a Detroit based producer. He is a fellow based in Dallas Texas. He has been laying low for the last few years, but he has new material coming out on Down Low records. It is a shame, because he is a fine producer.

mt, Wednesday, 21 August 2002 03:07 (twenty-three years ago)

He was the man that DJ hell stole everything from

bollocks as usual, unless this mix is from 1991 which I seriously doubt. Still Mixed Up Hague sounds worth checking out.

The Derrick May mix I love too, Green Velvet's 'The Preacher' just seems to have been made for that way of mixing. I'm amazed it's so popular here because when it was released it got really mixed (hoho) reviews.

Stacey Pullen's DJ Kicks is excellent, although hard to pin down why it works. Of course Michael Mayer's Immer and Tobias Thomas Fur Dich

And yes, DJ Hell's Live at Fuse is one of my faves at the moment (Andrew McLaughlan's 'Love Story' on that mix is utter genius).

Omar, Wednesday, 21 August 2002 05:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Larry Levan's Live at the Paradise Garage (words fail), Claude Young's DJ Kicks (extremely underrated techno set),

yea, these 2 are great, and the jeff mills liquid room is good, although i've heard better mix tapes

is the Stacey Pullen one any good?

Dave Angel, the orbit, april 1993. really unique set, before techno went totally Mills/Young/Hawtinesque, but total absence of wild/taylor/zamani/bondzio acid, so its quite a unique set (many well known tracks - koenig cylinders, couple of bollands tracks, aurins mecon, loads and loads i would like to know)

Joey Beltram, orbit, dec 93. joey starts off with mike dunn's magic feet (one of the djax rmxs which i prefer to the original), into my sound and energy flash (well, duh!) and then gradually veers closer and closer to gabba (i smell the blood of an english.....muffin!)

Easygroove, fantazia, may 92. oldskool hardcore of course, nookie, manix, piano choonz, breaks, amusing mc too - "my djs in the mix, my djs in the mix, i think hes had 3 weetabix!", and "ecstasy, you really got me going, got me so i don't know what i'm doing" yeeah! on the end of this tape there is, like, 30 seconds of krome and time djing at a rave somewhere with 3 ragga mcs and it sounds like the best nite EVER!

Stu Allen, Manchester Piccadily Radio set, sometime 92. all the classics, let down my lame manc mc though.

um, guess when i was 16

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 07:35 (twenty-three years ago)

is the Stacey Pullen one any good?

you can hear all the DJ Kicks and X-mix albums in RealAudio at www.k7.com

I also like the Laboratoire Garnier mix from 1995 IIRC, one of the first double mix-cd's which give Garnier some breathing space, Lots of classics, first cd is a bit more housier, second one spaced-out techno and acid. Favourite bit occurs on mix1 when Fierce Ruling Diva's 'You Got To Believe' is mixed into one of those Landstrumm bruisers.

Omar, Wednesday, 21 August 2002 07:57 (twenty-three years ago)

Mills Liquid Room, Herbert Mistakes, Bell Button are all yesses. others: Fatboy Slim On the Floor at the Boutique (best party-on-wax ever, damn near); DJ DB History of Our World Part 1 (best jungle album ever, period); DJ /rupture Gold Teeth Thief (Minesweeper Suite also fine but nowhere near as great).

Most overrated by a mile: Coldcut Journeys By DJ. boooooring.

M Matos (M Matos), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 09:21 (twenty-three years ago)

I have to agree with popular opinion: Paul Oakenfold's 1994 "Goa Mix", a two hour studio turntable mix made for Radio 1's Essential Mix. Its near mythical status is well deserved.

Siegbran Hetteson (eofor), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 10:41 (twenty-three years ago)

haha! 4voice! namlook gets everywhere doesn't he??? still, thought he'd have played caught in the sense of mystery ("believe me, i have tried all this shit" - does it say shit? or is it stuff?), anyway...

siegbran, there are no sven/marco sets from 94 on here, so i am still searching for that track. anyone got any vath/zaffarano sets from 1994?

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 11:04 (twenty-three years ago)

My favourites:

Chemical Brothers - Live at the Social (Vol. 1)
Jon Carter - Live at the Social (Vol. 2)
Coldcut - 70 Minutes of Madness
Jeff Mills - Live at the Liquid Rooms
In at the Deep End - Elliot Eastwick
Justin Robertson - CDScape (Journeys by DJ)
Grooverider - The Prototype Years
Derrick May - The Mayday Mix
Derrick Carter - A Pagan Offering
Mark Rae - Ordered from the Catalogue
Deep Dish - Yoshiesque

Rick, Wednesday, 21 August 2002 11:14 (twenty-three years ago)

I really like my Dave Clarke bootlegs, but what about Pumpkin Squeeze Music by DJ Q-Bert? The most imaginative and funniest DJ set ever.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 11:28 (twenty-three years ago)

Jon Carter/Junior Cartier-Live 7 Mix-Filthy house music all the way through the two discs, I always talk about Jon Carter because he seems to be a victim of (a) being English and (b)being married to Sara Cox. I think people assume he's a cheesey superstar DJ type or at least underestimate how good the guy is. He's still better than anyone else I've ever seen and for god's sake buy this or Viva Bugged Out mixed by him which is still great. The Live 7 mix is about 3 or 4 years old and it has Capital Rocka by Medicine8 on it, which is just getting released now, amazing tune.

The Stanton Warriors-The Stanton Sessions.

It starts with this remix of Basement Jaxx Jump and Shout which pretty much rips the original apart. Then the whole thing is just hard concrete funky evidence of how fucking wicked, mental, and danceworthy all the nu-breakbeat stuff these days is. There's a fantastic MC over the whole thing too, it's just a fucking rollercoaster, unlike lots of mixes aswell this one is instantaneously appealing. It won't come out of your player for months and you'll change your favourite track every week.

Justin Robertson-Bugged Out Mix.

This comes with a Felix mix on the flipside but ignore it in favour of JR's one. He's another sort of "always on the bill, never topping it" type of DJ, inexplicably. This starts housey, with this wicked Sam the Man Burns track that has this great vocal "house music, can no longer be, commercial free". Then you've got the Tenaglia remix of Flash later which is pretty cool, and a few absolute disco-squeal classics like Hatiras-Spaced Invader. Can we call that whole sound Disco-Squeal or something, I'm talking double fast French House with techno elements.

Honorable Mentions and things I'm listening to at the mo'

Harry Choo Choo Romero-Subliminal Sessions 2.

Erick Morillo-Subliminal Sessions 3 (anything on subliminal basically, i always thought morillo was cheese too but he isn't, it seems)

Freq Nasty-Y4K-Next Level Breaks-More of those wubwub noises.

Also Tom Middleton-Sound of the Cosmos-Check it out definitely, 3 CDs of kind of relaxed breaks and house but not in a bad way. He does a nice boot of Sunglasses at Night and Blue Monday too.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 11:35 (twenty-three years ago)

has anyone got any dj sneak, dj deeon, dj rush, derrick carter, gene farris mixes they can recommend?

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 11:39 (twenty-three years ago)

4voice! namlook gets everywhere doesn't he???

That track is sooooo good. I first heard this on the Trancemaster 4 comp and it has been one of my favourite tracks ever. I don't know if these compilations ever crossed the channel, but volumes 1-6 (circa 1992-1994) were very, very good. After that, they made the terrible decision to make it a 2CD series crammed with sub-par material and "as seen on TV" stickers. The whole thing only got reasonably decent again around volume 25.

Siegbran Hetteson (eofor), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 11:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Grooverider, Hardstep Collection II
- Perfectly poised between the ruff, the dark and the opulent. I'm sure there are a hundred jungle mixes that are just as brilliant, but this is nonetheless the best I've found, and the ten minutes or so of FBD Project's "She's So" transforming into Dillinja's "The Angels Fell" (ie. the two greatest jungle tracks ever) could be the best ten minutes in recorded music.

Sasha & Digweed - Northern Exposure
- it seems right to laugh and sneer, but just because S&D's idea of dance music (in short: melodic and emotional) is totally wrong as a universal approach, that doesn't mean it doesn't sound gorgeous on its own terms (Sasha's new album is quite pleasant too, actually, if a bit tiring in full).

Deep Dish - Yoshiesque
- that said most days I prefer Deep Dish's approach, which has the good sense not to jettison the funk. Re: what distinguishes Deep Dish's take on prog - clearly it's the warmth, no? I always thought the yellow and green of the packaging that perfectly distinguished them from the typical blues and greys of most prog.

Hardfloor, Jack The Box
- for all your acid house needs!

Herbert, Let's All Make Mistakes
Michael Mayer, Immer
Zed Bias, Sounds Of The Pirates
- I've grouped these three together because, despite their differences, their core value for me is largely the same in that they all focus on the irresistible danger inherent to intermeshing non-identical grooves. If Herbert's the only one who explicitly courts mistakes, all three nonetheless recognise the sexual allure of instability.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 12:25 (twenty-three years ago)

my favorite mix is probably by my friend Bryan's group. it's called "Marcia Blaine School Disco" - rap, Radiohead, TLC, Boards of Canada, among other things, tho there probably isn't a single hard cut in the entire thing - Bry says they all complain that it's "full of mistakes" - pfffft!! if so, thank goodness!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 17:21 (twenty-three years ago)

A recent cracker is the Unabombers' "The Electric Chair - Basement Soul Music", dirty modern soul blended seamlessly with funk classics until you don't know which is which. There are some unheard belters on this mix - search out "Turn Off The Lights" by Frank De Jo Jo and Terri Pace.

I've got to admit that Coldcut's "Journeys By DJ" is a fave, I'm a bit of a sucker for pointless eclecticism. In which case David Holmes' "Essential Mix" and "Come Get I Got It" have to be mentioned, as well as the Lo-Fi's "On The Floor At The Boutique" which is barely mixed but packed full of goodness (No Diggity, Stakker Humanoid, Out Of Space, Be Young Be Foolish Be Happy). In this vein "The Document" by DJ Andy Smith is a work of genius, and actually works as a mix despite such inspired juxtapositions as Grandmaster Flash On The Wheels Of Steel with Peggy Lee's Sittin' On The Dock Of The Bay.

There's plenty of good stuff already mentioned, Ronan's first three selections are pretty much spot on (I haven't heard the others). Justin Robertson's "Imprint #1" is also worth a listen, though get the "Bugged Out!" one first and don't ignore the Felix flip, you spendthrift fools.

Mike Ratford, Wednesday, 21 August 2002 19:19 (twenty-three years ago)

I have the GENE FARRIS: BOOKED mix, and I can't really recommend it. There are some good tracks, but the mix as a whole doesn;t seem to go anywhere. He doesn;t key mix, and he plays very melodic records, so some of the mixes are quite annoying to listen to. I have heard that Gene is amazing live, so this is all too bad...

Has anyone heard all the FABRIC mixes? I like the first with Craig Richards, amd abivalent about the second with Terry Francis, and have yet to hear the third (although I know at least one track is the bomb... "G String Underbeard" anyone?). Does anyone like or dislike #3 or #4 with Tony Humphries?

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Wednesday, 21 August 2002 22:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Currently I am liking Future Sound of UK by Cut La Roc. The Dirtchamber Session by Liam Howlett is also a favorite. I'm stuck in 2000.

felicity (felicity), Thursday, 22 August 2002 00:27 (twenty-three years ago)

damnI thought convexion was deason himself... thanks for filling me in!

as for Derrick May and DEMF, I was caught in the hail storm the second year.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Thursday, 22 August 2002 00:58 (twenty-three years ago)

Mine=Danny Tenaglia-any of his "Global Underground" mixes are worth checking out. Fantastic DJ.

Richie Hawtin-"Close to the edit" 100 tunes, 300 loops condensed into 53 minutes. Fucking genius. Very minimal, very trippy in places but always very dancefloor orientated.

Bentley Rhythm Ace FSUK mix-Not a straightforward dance mix as such. And I dont know what kind of club you would hear Jefferson Airplane mixed into Fatboy Slim or Georgie Fame mixed into Hardfloor. Good fun.

Stanton Warriors-"Stanton Sessions"-Hard to categorize this mix. It's got lots of different styles and it rocks.

Michael Bourke, Thursday, 22 August 2002 10:15 (twenty-three years ago)

LTJ BUKEM - Progression Sessions Vol. 1... why doesn't this get the attention it deserves? Obviously, it is overshadowed by Logical Progression, but still...

Mixmag Live Hardcore Classics... didn't they hate hardcore when it came out, and then cash in later? Still a good mix, especially the second half...

Has nobody heard the FABRIC mixes? I am desperate for more info...

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Thursday, 22 August 2002 14:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Isn't there a Lee Coombes fabric mix? He's breakbeat I think.

Not sure 'bout the rest, it's the BUGGED OUT ones you want, haha not being biased by my own personal taste or nothing.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 22 August 2002 14:15 (twenty-three years ago)

If anyone wants some GOOD house mixes (none of this commercial "bangin" stuff you guys seem to love - AND NO TRANCE!), look me up on soulseek and download some mixes. Nothing but good, underground house music, and smooth nuskool breaks...

(slsk username schwantz)

schwantz, Thursday, 22 August 2002 16:20 (twenty-three years ago)

none of this commercial "bangin" stuff you guys seem to love

what do you define as "commercial 'bangin' stuff"? I don't think Derrick May counts.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Thursday, 22 August 2002 17:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Mmmm, Bukem. I prefer his instrumental Mixmag album. Lotsa cool crossfading wit' the amen break etc.

And I'll also take bangin' over chin strokin'. ;)

Also Michael was on the euro with Mix Up THe Hague Vol.1 . Excellent mix although not as radical as he seems to think (90% of the mix could have been finished before 1987 or at least just after David Toop's A-Z of Electro ;).

Omar, Thursday, 22 August 2002 17:39 (twenty-three years ago)

Some other honourable mentions:

LTJ Bukem - Logical Progression 2

Hybrid - Live at Gatecrasher 2001

Monsieur Dimitri's House Of Funk

Siegbran Hetteson (eofor), Thursday, 22 August 2002 19:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Coldcut - 70 Minutes Of Madness
Avalanches - Gimix
Goldie - Essential Mix Radio 1
Basement Jaxx - Essential Mix
Daft Punk - Essential; Mix Special 01/01/99
Deep Dish - Cream Separates Mix
Various - Blech (Warp)
Prodigy - Dirtchamber
Chemical Brothers - Live At The Heavenly Social
Sasha & Digweed - Northern Exposure 1

blueski, Thursday, 22 August 2002 19:31 (twenty-three years ago)

other people have already mentioned live at the liquid room, but it really does deserve to be mentioned again...the speed at which he mixes the track without it sounding in any way incoherent is amazing, and the track selection probably beats any mix i've ever heard...
the other mix that really got me into techno is surgeon live at tresor some time in 98 (think the date might be 11-9-98)...it's slightly more abstract than the mills mix but this doesnt really detract from it...
also, there was a darren price mix of stuff on novamute that came free with some magazine a while ago that was a great techno mix...
any adam beyer mixes i've heard have always been great as well...
gareth,im actually listening to a dj rush mix now (live@cocoon),dunno if i'd recommend it though,it is consistently banging but nothing special really...can wholeheartedly recomment the surgeon mix mentioned above though, its quality...

robin (robin), Friday, 23 August 2002 00:15 (twenty-three years ago)

Omar,

You are missing the point. Mixed Up Hague was radical because it re-introduced alot of those tracks to the younger heads. Obviously, main stream disco and the stuff that played more into Garage never really left people's consciousness (if for no other reason than Filter-House biting all those records...) but the Italio records were not really being championed, at least not that I am aware of. That mix summed up the aesthetic of those records and made a lot of people aware of them.

That was a weird point in time(1999.) Millsian Hard Techno had run it course, Basic Channel and everything that came out of it was running out of steam. Tech-House was beat, minimalism was getting tired. Mixed Up Hague was a new option, Techno-Antiquarianism. House music has always had black music, but to some extent, Techno repudiated that. Mixed Up Hague allowed people to reach further back than Detroit Techno. I-F was displaying the roots of Techno.

Ference did not change anything about those records, but he changed the way people we looked at them. Who else was championing that sound at that point in time? The only others I can think of would be Danny Wang and Metro Area.

mt, Friday, 23 August 2002 02:46 (twenty-three years ago)

Who else was championing that sound at that point in time?

Well, the obvious anwser you're not going to like but: DJ Hell. :) (probably Dave Clarke).

But yeah I get your point and it's a good thing to just present the whole aesthetic, not just a couple of cool ironic old tracks at the end of your mix.

But what an ace thread, soulseek is going to work overtime. :)

Omar, Friday, 23 August 2002 06:19 (twenty-three years ago)

"party people we gotta keep this thing going!"

has anyone heard Tenaglia's "Gag me with a tune?" there are some magic diva-house moments!

speaking of which, can anyone recommend a mix that has goooooood vocal house that I won't only like in an ironic fashion? CDs only as my internet connection references turtles.

Aaron Grossman (aajjgg), Friday, 23 August 2002 12:34 (twenty-three years ago)

Vocal house?

Subliminal Sessions 3-Erick Morillo. It's all very vocal, vaguely cheesey but in a nice summery latin way. Diva house tune of the year is still "At Night" by Shakedown.

Anyone else downloading I've heard this wicked old skool Agent Sumo remix of Jolly Radio by Jollymusic.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 24 August 2002 10:19 (twenty-three years ago)

Ronan, yeah, Freq Nasty is rrreally good. I saw his set @ Pukkelpop. Too bad his turntables occasionally went on strike the other day.

nathalie (nathalie), Saturday, 24 August 2002 11:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Anything Erick Morillo will be good fun vocal house, like Ronan suggested.

As for mix CDs in general, I favor the Holy Trinity of Global Underground: 012 Buenos Aires (Seaman), 013 Ibiza (Sasha), and 014 Hong Kong (Digweed). To me, these three represented the peak of the whole Global Underground concept, not to mention the best tunes and most inspired set programming and mixing. I feel this was the peak of GU-style "prog house/trance," even though I hate that terminology.

patrick, Saturday, 24 August 2002 13:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I like Darren Emerson Singapore, banganbingabing Northside Boogie etc etc.

Ronan (Ronan), Saturday, 24 August 2002 17:41 (twenty-three years ago)

aren't the freq nasty sets just tedious nu-school breaks. ronan, you've got your work cut out convincing me this is otherwise, but try anyway (is it not all that rennie pilgrim type stuff?))

having said that, i did like boomin back atcha

gareth (gareth), Saturday, 24 August 2002 21:31 (twenty-three years ago)

Do you hate nu skool breaks? The Y4K thing is pretty good but if you want to try some breaks DEFINITELY start with the Stanton Warriors-The Stanton Sesssions, it's not just a breaks thing, it's just kind of 70 minutes of absolute mentalism.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 9 September 2005 16:37 (twenty years ago)

The Crambe Repetita "Viva Moroder" mix posted on the stypod a while ago jumpstarted my new obsession for Giorgio Moroder and disco in general.

How is it no one's mentioned Morgan Geist's Unclassics?

pisces, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 01:19 (eighteen years ago)

I'm not sure but here are some personal faves of mine (in no particular order):

1) Richie Hawtin - Mixmag Live (1995)

Still sounds fresh as a daisy. Ahead of its time for sure.

2) Ricardo Villalobos - Love Family Trax

Prefer this to Taka Taka to be honest. His new fabric mix is also quality (not sure if it qualifies as a proper mix cd though).

3) Cassy - Panorama Bar 01

Nice and eclectic (for a 'minimal' set)

4) LTJ Bukem - Mixmag Live (1996)

No MC'ing thank god. And lots of crossfader action (as previously mentioned).

5) Recloose - Jigsaw Music

Quirky deep house mix

6) Stacey Pullen - BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix (1996)

Actually prefer this to his DJ Kicks (also good). 50/50 split between house and techno - both halves equally good. It's refreshing to see a garage stormer (Michael Procter's 'Deliver me') in the same set as some classic detroit bangers of the time. His fabric mix was massively disappointing compared to this.

7) Grooverider - BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix (1997)

An absolute classic. Groove doesn't flatten the listener with techstepper after techstepper but throws in some lighter / jazzier tunes to offset the darker stuff. D&B's final peak in my opinion.

8) Richie Hawtin - BBC Radio Maida Vale mix (2004)

Some great Matthew Dear / Mathew Jonson stuff in here.

9) Maurice Fulton - Resident Advisor Podcast (2006)

10) Derrick Carter - Back to Basics: Cut the Crap (1996)

As previously mentioned...

sam500, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 04:04 (eighteen years ago)

the lindstrom/prins thomas bbc 1 essential mix is great. really great. esp the al usher track that opens it and the trailmix "you make lovin fun" edit

max, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 04:14 (eighteen years ago)

i was just thinking about this thread today because i was listening to derrick carter's "cosmic disco" mix CD (for mixmag) ... insane!!

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 05:22 (eighteen years ago)

i've also really been digging rocky and diesel's journeys by dj vol 7

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 05:25 (eighteen years ago)

speaking of rocky and diesel, i picked up x-press 2's 'late night sessions'(ministry of sound) for 100yen (50p) the other day. very nice it is too.

sam500, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 05:28 (eighteen years ago)

i've got that "late night sessions", it's really nice!

i've fallen out of love with these mixes

10. glimmer twins - eskimo ii
11. dj harvey - freshjive promotional mix for "mad dog chronicles" (60 min cd)
12. basement jaxx - essential mix 1999 (2 hr mp3)
13. idjut boys - saturday nite live vol 2

the first two i guess because eclectic beardo stuff is so common now and there's so many good choices of stuff ... maybe rub'n'tug's "better with a spoonful of leather" or "campfire" or even their fabric mix has taken their place in my heart.

idjut boys "saturday night" mixes sound sorta limp compared to their 4 hr electric chair extravaganza!

oh yeah, also digging cajmere vs green velvet's 2cd "sessions" mix for ministry

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 05:36 (eighteen years ago)

i really enjoyed the first idjut's 'saturday night' mix. must dig that one out again. haven't heard the second. was 'press play' any good?

and how do u get hold of their "electric chair extravaganza"?!

sam500, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 05:41 (eighteen years ago)

rub-n-tugs fabric is totally awes

max, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 05:47 (eighteen years ago)

"press play" is OK but i hardly listen to it for some reason. too mellow, maybe?

for the idjuts mix go here to the electric chair website. on the left under "live mixes" you can find "idjut boys - electric chair may 2007 pt 1" and 2 and 3 ...

if you are using realone player you can do "view clip source" and it will give you a direct mp3 url

also find good shit there from winston hazel (incredible sheffield bleep'n'bass + hip hop dj) and ashley beedle and weatherall and so on

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 05:56 (eighteen years ago)

great, cheer for the linkage!

sam500, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 06:03 (eighteen years ago)

wow

there's also like three other sets from the idjut boys, a 2+ hr house set from maurice fulton, a laurent garnier set, ame (live?), lindstrom + prins thomas together and several sets from greg wilson

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 06:04 (eighteen years ago)

goldmine

haitch, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 08:07 (eighteen years ago)

also faze action's 'through the skies' mix is another goodie. really carefully thought out mix: old & new, house & broken beat...

1 Lamont Johnson Calypso After Nine
2 Plus Triple Journey (Idjut Boys Re-Touch)
3 Ray Mang Love Dancing
4 Campag Velocet Out On The Plinth (NYDX Mix)
5 Frankie Knuckles Only The Strong Survive (Instrumental Mix)
6 Frederic Galliano Boudiou Man (Rural Mix)
7 Black Jazz Chronicles Dope Stuff (Elektrik Afrika Mix)
8 Human Arts Big Sur Highway
9 Friel West Of Motebe
10 Sasse My Thing
11 Akwaaba Phlox
12 Kenlou Thru The Skies
13 Darktown Strutters Manhattan Skyline

sam500, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 08:37 (eighteen years ago)

4 Campag Velocet Out On The Plinth (NYDX Mix)
5 Frankie Knuckles Only The Strong Survive (Instrumental Mix)
6 Frederic Galliano Boudiou Man (Rural Mix)

this sequence is transcendently fruity

Vahid did I ever complain to you about yr underrating Business As Usual... by Brett Johnson? It's totally classic. Every time I pull it out I like it more. So dense'n'intense, just go go go go go the whole way through. Johnson's "Jiffy Pop"! Derrick Carter's "Do You Believe?"!! Awoke's "Awoke"! And above all the utter brilliance of Pepe Bradock's remix of Iz & Diz's "Mouth". It strikes me that a lot of nu-deepness in europe is taking its cues from this sort of stuff. What Classic-style mix should I be liking more? Apart from Sounds Your Eyes Can Follow?

Tim F, Monday, 17 March 2008 12:46 (seventeen years ago)

yeah i just took it out last night and listened again and i was *shocked* how good it was. you probably want to check out rob mello's recent mix for classic too.

not sure what else i can recommend in this vein. it seems to me like this sound's already been subsumed into the less ghetto/thug end of the "fidget house continuum", if such a thing exists. i was listening to switch's mix of jentina's "french kisses" today and i realized how boompty boomp it was. which was a surprise to me, because switch's bastard children (herve, sinden, others) seem interested in rewriting fidget house as an update of chicago ghetto house rather than an update of mainstream chicago (fuck it) boompty house.

but anyway ... jesse rose's volume of "body language", maybe? whatever trevor loveys is doing these days?

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 09:08 (seventeen years ago)

the only labels i can really think of off the top of my head are dubsided and freerange. and neither of which are particularly good suggestions. for whatever reason dubsided is like the most unheard "hot label" right now, they might as well be an urban / funky house for all the mainstream exposure they get. freerange on the other hand probably gets entirely too much respect. lots of listenable moments but also a bad vibe hanging over the thing. you listen and enjoy and suddenly you realize this is just 2nd or 3rd generation hybridized version of ye olde UK tech house a la terry francis or circulation, and that old homily comes to mind "can a rabid dog have tame puppies" .... or something like that. "an ill tree bears no good fruit"? what was that saying?

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 25 March 2008 09:21 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah I should check out that Mello mix, his Resident Advisor set was fabo along these lines.

Speaking of apples not falling far from the trees I always did love that first Layo & Bushwacka album, though I guess that's more breaksy. "Deep South" still classic 4 eva though.

Why haven't I mentioned Robbie Hardkiss's Mixed Messages mix on this thread yet? So so so so so good.

Tim F, Friday, 11 April 2008 23:41 (seventeen years ago)

Sort of not a DJ mix, but Alive 2007 is now my all time #2.

Spencer Chow, Friday, 11 April 2008 23:47 (seventeen years ago)

Mixed Messages is indeed awesome

I don't know if it's been mentioned in other threads, but Faze Action's Later mix is super fucking hot and that Asso track is the greatest thing in the world

winston, Saturday, 12 April 2008 01:31 (seventeen years ago)

Hardkiss on ILM? Hard to believe. I think I listened to that mix when it came out and was sorely let down because it was nothing like Scott Hardkiss' *Yes* mix. *That* one would be practically flawless if it didn't have the stupid "acid funk" song.

My favorite (never leaves my iPod): Blu Mar Ten "Made With Love"

Sorry, didn't feel like typing it out...it seems like there aren't too many pics linked to here anymore. What happened to the posters who used to put up really huge pics just to be obnoxious? Were they banned? Did I do something bad here?
