Bombay the Hard Way, Vol. 2: Electric Vindaloo

http://www.amazon.com/Bombay-Hard-Way-Vol-Electric/dp/B00005N6L2

A contentious display name choice set forth a long argument about what exactly constitutes "obscure" on a music message board.

Argument settled via poll so we quit ruining the finest display names thread further

larry longballs money (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 19 December 2010 00:40 (fifteen years ago)

Wasn't even into 'tronic much when it came out, but "Third World Lover" made me pick it up. Know a rockabilly/hc dude who felt the same way.

bendy, Sunday, 19 December 2010 00:43 (fifteen years ago)

TRIVIA: DJmeDJyou is Ross Harris aka "Ross Angeles" who is fairly obscure these days but is primarily known as his role as Joey in Airplane!

whogivesashit 2: electric sb-you (sarahel), Sunday, 19 December 2010 01:46 (fifteen years ago)

had never heard of this

also, once again, whiney's study is futile from the start since the poster who used the reference in his dn (causing this whole clusterfuck) admitted he had never heard of it either iirc???

u aint messin w/ my dengue (gr8080), Sunday, 19 December 2010 02:31 (fifteen years ago)

what was the second one?

I spilled, saucer-eyed, into the Tonetta fanclub underground. (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 19 December 2010 03:43 (fifteen years ago)

I'd heard of it.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Sunday, 19 December 2010 04:15 (fifteen years ago)

Pretty sure everything Dan did made it into Aquarius at that point.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Sunday, 19 December 2010 04:17 (fifteen years ago)

yep I've heard of this.

no pop, no style -- all simply (Viceroy), Sunday, 19 December 2010 04:29 (fifteen years ago)

A contentious display name choice set forth a long argument about what exactly constitutes "obscure" on a music message board.

i like how this is phrased in a sort of indirect way as if it were describing sixteenth century theological argument

How the hell do we plan on interpreting the data? The answer with the most votes wins?

saturday? thursday? monday? where am I.... (Stevie D(eux)), Sunday, 19 December 2010 05:08 (fifteen years ago)

Coz, I mean, even when Whiney loses he can just be all "Well dipshits if x% of voters have heard of it then it's really not that obscure"

saturday? thursday? monday? where am I.... (Stevie D(eux)), Sunday, 19 December 2010 05:13 (fifteen years ago)

sure ive heard of it. was really into automator back then. definitely liked the first one, don't recall hearing this one tho.

swvl, Sunday, 19 December 2010 05:45 (fifteen years ago)

i think i had heard of it but not the electric vindaloo part anyway. not even sure i heard of it

tremendoid, Sunday, 19 December 2010 07:34 (fifteen years ago)

larry longballs money (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 19 December 2010 07:43 (fifteen years ago)

ive heard of it and i downloaded and listened to it in the year of our lord two thousand and two

Princess TamTam, Sunday, 19 December 2010 07:49 (fifteen years ago)

i knew that the first one existed, have a few downloaded tracks from it, but was unaware that there was a vol. 2.

circles, Sunday, 19 December 2010 07:54 (fifteen years ago)

I am aware of its existence. Honestly I couldn't say much beyond that.

Badmotorfinger Debate Club (MFB), Sunday, 19 December 2010 08:03 (fifteen years ago)

I have the first one. The music's really good, but the jokey titles are kinda cringey.

B-Boy Bualadh Bos (ecuador_with_a_c), Sunday, 19 December 2010 08:56 (fifteen years ago)

not heard of it

did actually know Steve Shasta's trivia factoid but I needed to look up that dude was in Sukia to nudge me into knowing, if you follow me

When I Pardew I See Rakes (DJ Mencap), Sunday, 19 December 2010 09:09 (fifteen years ago)

Beatles compilation playing in restaurant this morning.

Thankfully I brought my iPod, so I can ensure the wait.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 19 December 2010 14:43 (fifteen years ago)

Had not heard of (prior to last week) and I was aware of who DTA was at the time.

Auto Mall Maniac (kkvgz), Sunday, 19 December 2010 16:49 (fifteen years ago)

Did Dan The Automator actually have anything to do with Bombay 2: Electric Vindaloo? Discogs notes indicate he doesn't...

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Sunday, 19 December 2010 16:53 (fifteen years ago)

Oh ok, well regardless, I was into artsy, instrumental hip-hop!

Auto Mall Maniac (kkvgz), Sunday, 19 December 2010 16:56 (fifteen years ago)

Automator did vol 1, vol 2 was a bunch of other producers going wild with his idea

larry longballs money (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 19 December 2010 16:57 (fifteen years ago)

iirc

larry longballs money (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 19 December 2010 16:58 (fifteen years ago)

all the tracks in iTunes say "featuring" him??

hope this helps (Granny Dainger), Sunday, 19 December 2010 16:58 (fifteen years ago)

Was the first volume even his "idea"? I always got the impression that someone at the label was like "here are a bunch of tapes, can you make a comp out of 'em?"

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Sunday, 19 December 2010 17:08 (fifteen years ago)

was not familiar to this iconic compliation

in my world of Hmong ppl (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, 19 December 2010 18:18 (fifteen years ago)

I owned both volumes at one point - part of working at Global Rhythm.

that's not funny. (unperson), Sunday, 19 December 2010 18:20 (fifteen years ago)

lol daniel esq on the wrong cultural study

u aint messin w/ my dengue (gr8080), Sunday, 19 December 2010 18:42 (fifteen years ago)

my copy currently located somewhere in a box of CDs in my parent's garage

los blue jeans, Monday, 20 December 2010 17:09 (fifteen years ago)

Never heard of it, nor of any previous volumes. I do know who Dan the Automator is though, I even own the Deltron 3030 album. Is this some kind of Indian pop music comp by him?

Tuomas, Monday, 20 December 2010 23:51 (fifteen years ago)

had never heard of it. it's funny that that's become a conversation in and of itself because really just saying "it was a dumb screen name and look the same dumb wordplay was thought of once 10 years ago" is enough, there's no reason to get all GAWD you guys should know about this random old record.

some dude, Monday, 20 December 2010 23:54 (fifteen years ago)

Are you going to do the 4th cultural study about whether people have heard this CD?

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/c/c1/AmICoolorWhat.jpg

I remember you claiming it was in 100% of dollar bins in used stores & you got kind of flippant when I suggested otherwise.

Stop Non-Erotic Cabaret (Abbbottt), Monday, 20 December 2010 23:55 (fifteen years ago)

Pretty sure everything Dan did made it into Aquarius at that point.

^^^yep I heard of this, and iirc even heard it cuz a friend bought a copy

for the record I hate the Automator, dude is so fucking obnoxious/overrated

twat dust and ego overload (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 20 December 2010 23:56 (fifteen years ago)

Suspense is killin me tbh

cathy opie & anthony (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 4 January 2011 17:13 (fifteen years ago)

We had this at the college radio station, I liked it.

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 4 January 2011 17:22 (fifteen years ago)

Ditto. College radio bait for sure. Liked it, played it, forgot it, like about 1000 other records from 1999-2007.

grandavis, Wednesday, 5 January 2011 04:09 (fifteen years ago)

bought vol 1 way back when cuz i was "into" dan the automator at the time. liked it, but haven't listened to it in years. knew there was a vol 2 and always meant to check it out, but never cared enough to actually follow through.

this record is a good working definition of the point at which obscure slides into not-obscure, and vice-versa. to people paying lots of attention to music in general and especially to the scene corner it inhabits, it's not going to seem properly obscure. "come on, you think that's obscure? i assume you've never heard the ass baboons of venus..."

to everyone else (i.e., most normal, sane people), it's gonna seem a hopelessly obscure wtf curiosity.

carles marx (contenderizer), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 06:48 (fifteen years ago)

Which I've said from the start, btw

endlamoosing (Whiney G. Weingarten), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 07:00 (fifteen years ago)

I'm trying to remember how I first heard of Dan The Automator and I think it was first JSBX "Acme" and then Vol. 1 of this. I have heard of this record.

ARP 2600 vs. Atari 2600 (Ówen P.), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 08:18 (fifteen years ago)

This is an interesting poll and I hope there's a happy ending to this instead of a "lol at forgotten producer X" punchline

ARP 2600 vs. Atari 2600 (Ówen P.), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 08:20 (fifteen years ago)

to people paying lots of attention to music in general and especially to the scene corner it inhabits, it's not going to seem properly obscure. "come on, you think that's obscure? i assume you've never heard the ass baboons of venus..."

I've paid attention to rap/hip-hop since I was a teenager, I know who Dan the Automator is and I even own the Deltron 3030 album, but this record is still obscure to me. Many others have said the same in this thread. Basically it seems to me the record is not obscure only if you are/were a Dan the Automator fan, or if you were working at a record store when it came out.

Tuomas, Wednesday, 5 January 2011 10:34 (fifteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Tuesday, 11 January 2011 00:01 (fifteen years ago)

Or a DJ at an American college/community radio station, as stated.

grandavis, Tuesday, 11 January 2011 01:02 (fifteen years ago)

Okay we have 22 hours to decide:

If chrisv2010 wins, then ______ ????
If Whiney wins, then _____ ????

lamey g. curtis (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 11 January 2011 01:25 (fifteen years ago)

will chrisv2010 have to presubmit all further dn's for approval?

lamey g. curtis (Stevie D(eux)), Tuesday, 11 January 2011 01:25 (fifteen years ago)

Loser has to run naked around ILTMI.

Suppositori Spelling (Autumn Almanac), Tuesday, 11 January 2011 01:33 (fifteen years ago)

either way we all lose

gr8080, Tuesday, 11 January 2011 03:05 (fifteen years ago)

pretty sure it's gonna result in an argument about about exactly what ratio would be mean "obscure" on a musioc message board

Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 11 January 2011 03:08 (fifteen years ago)

looking forward to that

gr8080, Tuesday, 11 January 2011 03:14 (fifteen years ago)

Hey Whiney I have to apologize, I reread that conversation about the Garfield album, and you weren't flip at all.

Stop Non-Erotic Cabaret (Abbbottt), Tuesday, 11 January 2011 03:16 (fifteen years ago)

Had this for about 7 years, assume it was a promo, not sure I ever listened to it. Sold it a while ago.

Mark, Tuesday, 11 January 2011 03:18 (fifteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Wednesday, 12 January 2011 00:01 (fifteen years ago)

BUT WHAT DOES IT MEAN??????????

lamey g. curtis (Stevie D(eux)), Wednesday, 12 January 2011 00:11 (fifteen years ago)

lurkers and socks

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 12 January 2011 00:14 (fifteen years ago)

proven by science, whiney.

gr8080, Wednesday, 12 January 2011 05:04 (fifteen years ago)

jesus christ that's a lot of votes

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 12 January 2011 05:07 (fifteen years ago)

Why shouldn't a lurker matter just as much as anyone else, since we're talking about statistical analysis here?

Tuomas, Wednesday, 12 January 2011 07:44 (fifteen years ago)

55 of the "yes" votes are Whiney socks

basically just a 2/47 freak out (sic), Wednesday, 12 January 2011 10:57 (fifteen years ago)
