KE$ha reminds me of every freestyle and Miami bass tart I grew up with, most of whom boasted at least one striking some. She's obviously outsold them all. I don't have to think about her that much -- she makes a noise I don't mind in the right mood, like listening to a vacuum cleaner or Metal Machine Music.

this is what i would like about ke$ha, were her music listenable. i actually feel like ke$ha is the more likely to make a song i like - she's just a change in producer and an autotune scrub away from that, really - but as it stands i just have this kneejerk repulsion to what her songs sound like.

and at least i don't read 1000-word screeds on why katy perry is the most important pop star in forever.

One radio show I often end up listening to in the car on a sunday afternoon is this local countdown of "the biggest hits in hollywood", which is half celebrity gossip and half purportedly the biggest songs in mainstream LA clubs. It's basically all guetta and dr luke and "like a g6" and etc. and makes me wonder what it would be like to be totally into this stuff, like, as its own scene, rather than just as pop music generally.

She's probably Christian in the way some people are in that you never hear her talk about religion in a serious discussion or anything, and lives a very secular life, but picks and chooses convenient moments to all of a sudden pop up and rally around it (ie, getting mad that someone said 'goddammit' or something).

If her family is super-Christian it's probably just that she wants to keep them on-side notwithstanding everything else she does. The most prosaic explanation for something is usually correct.

Slut-voting in Popular Music & Song

some dude, Monday, 20 December 2010 02:53 (fifteen years ago)

Abbbottt OTM. Katy's "I like to act kind of slutty sometimes but I'm still basically a good christian girl" infuriates me beyond belief. At least Ke$ha wears her trashiness proudly, and she never wrote a song as offensively dishonest as "I Kissed A Girl". Music-wise I only really like one song by each: Hot N Cold and We Re Who We R and I find both Perry's over singing as annoying as Ke$ha's mannerisms.

daavid, Monday, 20 December 2010 03:11 (fifteen years ago)

I just want people who pretend to embrace hedonism to also embrace godlessness (or at least the pretense of it) because it's a lot more fun that way imo!

Stop Non-Erotic Cabaret (Abbbottt), Monday, 20 December 2010 03:16 (fifteen years ago)

Out of all Ke$ha's songs, We R Who We R is the one you like?

k3vin k., Monday, 20 December 2010 03:28 (fifteen years ago)

I guess

it seems so rushed and underwritten to me, especially the bridge in general and "so let's go-oh-oh, let's go!" specifically.

katherine (katherinesta), Monday, 20 December 2010 03:34 (fifteen years ago)

I agree with lex upthread. Ke$ha has the potential, buried in there somewhere under all the nonsense, to make good records. Perry is just on a downward slope of diminishing returns crapitude.

Les centimètres énigmatiques (snoball), Monday, 20 December 2010 10:56 (fifteen years ago)

i wish ke$ha sounded more like this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Xx6aBfRlUo

it's basically her drink-all-night-get-fucked-up-and-throw-up aesthetic but just made slightly more rhythmic, slightly less ugly vocally, slightly more danceable, and i love that.

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Monday, 20 December 2010 11:02 (fifteen years ago)

Disagree with Lex, Katy Perry has the potential to actually make a good record because her voice is so much more anonymous and she might one day work with a songwriter + producer who can put out something amazing. Ke$ha records will always have Ke$ha's annoying vocals on them.

Matt DC, Monday, 20 December 2010 11:05 (fifteen years ago)

but ke$ha's vocals are annoying primarily because of the way she uglifies them w/autotune - who knows what she sounds like without it, probably pretty anonymous. even when katy perry deliberately smooths out her more grating inflections (eg "teenage dream") there's still something unpleasantly harsh about her voice.

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Monday, 20 December 2010 11:09 (fifteen years ago)

"I like to act kind of slutty sometimes but I'm still basically a good christian girl" infuriates me beyond belief. At least Ke$ha wears her trashiness proudly

otm. Ke$ha's crimes are negligible. Perry is actively vile/poisonous.

Simon H., Monday, 20 December 2010 11:14 (fifteen years ago)

Ke$ha at least has some kind of artistic vision, even if it's one I don't particularly like. Perry is trying to be everything to everybody and the result is watered down weak sauce.

Les centimètres énigmatiques (snoball), Monday, 20 December 2010 11:15 (fifteen years ago)

69 65 51 46 (Ioannis), Monday, 20 December 2010 12:15 (fifteen years ago)

Wow this is a really hard choice, in the end I have to say I dislike Katy Perry a lot more, and this is mostly on the basis that she's gorgeous, which makes the cocktease act so much more obnoxious. That story about her calling out an ex-boyfriend in the audience in the middle of a show because he rejected her in high school (or something) was just the height of over-inflated ego. Plus, her music is really about on the same level of simplicity as the Black Eyed Peas, only without any personality, and a strange fixation toward singing everything AS LOUDLY AS POSSIBLE.

Ke$ha is super obnoxious too, but she at least looks like the trashy girls I know, and at least she is honest. So you get one point for that.

frogbs, Monday, 20 December 2010 14:00 (fifteen years ago)

Ke$ha's voice without (or at least with minimal) autotune is mostly boring:

katherine (katherinesta), Monday, 20 December 2010 15:39 (fifteen years ago)

i don't really get the "Ke$ha has a VISION" thing. just because she takes the same Dr. Luke sound as every other female top 40 star and pushes it slightly more over the top and obnoxious?

Princess TamTam, Monday, 20 December 2010 16:58 (fifteen years ago)

I don't think Ke$ha (or Katy for that matter) has a vision but unsurprisingly the collective efforts of everyone involved to make massively hooky tunes pays off at least some of the time for each of them.

I have noticed though that with all of the artists in this general vein I hate them less as time goes on, maybe I just become numb to their obnoxiousness.

Tim F, Monday, 20 December 2010 22:08 (fifteen years ago)

yeah i think that's kind of inevitable -- all these big newish pop stars seem to kick in the door with something so obnoxious and divisive and one-dimensional but they can't help but become more tolerable and multi-faceted as they rack up more hits

some dude, Monday, 20 December 2010 22:18 (fifteen years ago)

Good point - - I really didn't give Ke$ha the time of day until "Your Love Is My Drug" gave her some other pegs to hang her hat on, and once that was mapped out, I could accept "Tik Tok" retroactively. Katy has yet to do anything that can win me over to "I Kissed A Girl," which isn't just sonically annoying but also socially retrograde and basically irritating on every level. "California Gurls" at least made me accept that she was good-looking.

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 21 December 2010 04:29 (fifteen years ago)

I don't think most people necessarily mean "growing into" into Ke$ha. It's more like not being so annoyed with her style/persona anymore, maybe. The one thing I admire about Ke$ha is her vocal timing. There are a couple of instances I can think of where she just nails it.

daavid, Tuesday, 21 December 2010 05:00 (fifteen years ago)

so in that respect Ke$ha is the complete opposite of Katy Perry?

katherine (katherinesta), Tuesday, 21 December 2010 05:14 (fifteen years ago)

I wonder how soon LA electro pop will reach the kind of cultural ubiquity that provokes a backlash?

After what happened to pop disco in the late 70s and the High NRG / Hip-house combo in the early 90s the reaction against this music should be epic.
