has anybody read the recent neil young bio "shakey"...
I'm tempted to buy it, if for no other reason then to find out what kind of life neil young has led....strange that someone who has been one of my favirote performers EVA should be such a mystery...

I have read it, even shelled out hard cash for it, and it is an excellent book, though be warned that the pointless machismo of the various oafish Californian hangers on may grate, until every now and then a 'lady' comes along to point out what a bunch of prats they all are. Young gives quite a lot away in the long interviews (which is presumably why he tried to prevent its release) and refuses to deny his involvement with some of the more, er, outre figures of the time. Jack Nitzche (sorry about the spelling) is particularly daft for instance. Young is certainly a lot more interesting than Dylan, though, like all rock stars, he's about three years behind what's really going on. Take the plunge. The Horse bits are both sad and grate. (I mean, how could they forget how to play such simple songs...)

shakey's a great book (forget which neil thread had some chatter about it, but there was there was consensus on its greatness there as well)

It gets brought up in most Neil threads. Thanks to the new Blue Notes release, I've been digging into this again (read it in 2009 in anticipation of the first archives box) and losing 30-45 minutes of free time every time.

Yeah, and the Russ Myer one. Both quality works, albeit of a different stripe due to the obvious lack of direct access to his subjects (Wynette being already deceased and Russ already in the final throws of dementia during the writing).

I bought a (second-hand) autographed copy of this recently. It reads "Dear Dan--Don't believe everything you read! - Neil."

Anyway, given Neil's well-known disavowal of the book, I thought that was a neat autograph
