~~~~VOTE IN THE 2010 ALBUMS OF THE YEAR (METAL EDITION) POLL~~~ Voting Ends Sunday Jan 9th
And due to popular demand on the metal thread we're back again.
We have a nominations list BUT, if you were too lazy to click on the thread to nominate you can ask ON THIS THREAD if it's ok to vote for something, and if it meets the criteria, you will then be allowed to vote for it and the nomination(s) will be added to the Google spreadsheet.
If you vote for something not on the list and didn't ask here, your ballot will be rejected and you will be asked to resubmit it. So please follow the rules.
Also, if there's any bullshit like happened on the all time metal poll we will just halt the thing completely.
When you vote you should receive an automated reply. If you don't get one, then it means in all likelihood your ballot has not been received. So if you don't get a reply, please post on this thread and tell us.
Please send your ballots ranked (minimum of 15 maximum of 40) but DON'T put numbers beside your albums. Please use this format ARTIST - ALBUM
Your #1 album will be first and you will rank in descending order
Subject line in the email is to be ILM Metal Poll 2010 and the address is ilxmetalpoll2010 at gmail dot com
As usual everyone is allowed to vote, including lurkers.
Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Sunday, 19 December 2010 22:13 (fifteen years ago)
Also please post here if you voted/got your automated reply, thanks.
Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Sunday, 19 December 2010 22:23 (fifteen years ago)
So if I only vote for 5 albums, is it still 1 vote for 1 album? I seem to recall on the poll two years ago you could spend a certain amount of points on albums you liked more. Sorry if this is a dumb question
get off my lawn (rockapads), Sunday, 19 December 2010 23:04 (fifteen years ago)
No, you must vote for at least 15 albums. A maximum of 40. (the more the better as it means less chances of ties). If your ballot has less than 15 albums on it, it wont be counted and you will be emailed asking you to resubmit. So if you can manage 40 then please do so!
Your #1 album will receive 40 points #2 will get 39 & so on. This is the way we always ran it I think.
Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Sunday, 19 December 2010 23:09 (fifteen years ago)
oh okay cool. just wanted to make sure I wasn't spreading myself thin by voting for too many.
get off my lawn (rockapads), Sunday, 19 December 2010 23:16 (fifteen years ago)
Nope, the more albums you vote for the better!
Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Sunday, 19 December 2010 23:22 (fifteen years ago)
Voted, got an automated reply.
EZ Snappin, Sunday, 19 December 2010 23:40 (fifteen years ago)
Awesome! Gonna take me a couple days to complete my ballot and order it. Usually I have it all ready to go but there's more stuff I want to listen to and gestate on first.
no pop, no style -- all simply (Viceroy), Sunday, 19 December 2010 23:42 (fifteen years ago)
Quick work Mr Snappin! Thanks!
Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Sunday, 19 December 2010 23:43 (fifteen years ago)
I had fifteen already in order from my end of year top 20. Wasn't hard to put on the other stuff I liked to pad it out.
EZ Snappin, Sunday, 19 December 2010 23:46 (fifteen years ago)
voted, got reply. Thanks for organizing this
Ryan, Sunday, 19 December 2010 23:57 (fifteen years ago)
Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Monday, 20 December 2010 00:29 (fifteen years ago)
Just checking, but I thought we added the Hypnos 69 album in the nom thread.
one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 20 December 2010 00:36 (fifteen years ago)
We did, it's probably just not saved properly on the spreadsheet. Maybe JJ will add it to the 1st post WHEN HE SEES THIS
Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Monday, 20 December 2010 00:40 (fifteen years ago)
Spreadsheet updated.
Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Monday, 20 December 2010 00:56 (fifteen years ago)
still think we should allow minimum of 10 ballots for people who like 10 or more albums, but haven't had time to hit 15
i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Monday, 20 December 2010 02:08 (fifteen years ago)
anyway... i've chosen my albums, just gonna play w/ the ordering a bit before i submit
i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Monday, 20 December 2010 02:09 (fifteen years ago)
White Hills - White Hills
^^ honestly this is NOT a metal album, should be veto'd (but if not, i may vote for it anyway)
i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Monday, 20 December 2010 02:11 (fifteen years ago)
you had several weeks to veto stuff, that was nominated way back and you just noticed?
Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Monday, 20 December 2010 03:11 (fifteen years ago)
There's lots of borderline stuff thats heavy psych or whatever. If it places I'd be surprised, though I nominated it and like it.
EZ Snappin, Monday, 20 December 2010 03:12 (fifteen years ago)
i like it, i'm just surprised herman would let in white hills but not, like, acid mothers temple ;_;
i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Monday, 20 December 2010 04:23 (fifteen years ago)
Were amt vetoed? I don't remember.
Who wants to start a "campaign thread" for albums with youtubes?
Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Monday, 20 December 2010 06:11 (fifteen years ago)
AMT weren't actually vetoed, i nominated them, but you conveniently left 'em off the noms list ^_____^
i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Monday, 20 December 2010 06:50 (fifteen years ago)
I didn't see them, honestly. But you nominated so much stuff haphazardly to be a pain in the arse so it's your own fault.
Now off you go and start the youtube thread! I'm going to go back to bed for a few more hours.
Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Monday, 20 December 2010 07:00 (fifteen years ago)
so.... you were sleeping, then woke up to check the ilx metal poll thread, and now are going back to bed?
i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Monday, 20 December 2010 07:01 (fifteen years ago)
I didn't wake up to check it. I woke up, couldn't get right back to sleep, so I got a drink and checked my emails then had a quick look here. Now I really am going back to bed.
Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Monday, 20 December 2010 07:06 (fifteen years ago)
what kind of drink did you have?
no pop, no style -- all simply (Viceroy), Monday, 20 December 2010 08:19 (fifteen years ago)
orange juice
Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Monday, 20 December 2010 13:51 (fifteen years ago)
and bacardi 151
Sent in my ballot! And here's the spotify playlist link again in case there's people who didn't check the nominations thread:
obv. i was j/k
8 ballots in already
Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Monday, 20 December 2010 19:47 (fifteen years ago)
we have reached 10 ballots already! Keep em coming! Thanks to all who voted.
I assume everyone received the autoreply?
Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Monday, 20 December 2010 21:20 (fifteen years ago)
No-one want to start a youtube thread to boost albums?
If you want to do non-youtube boosting do it here! Stan for your faves and obscure curios here!
Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Monday, 20 December 2010 22:00 (fifteen years ago)
Another vote in, thanks!
Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 21 December 2010 00:01 (fifteen years ago)
11 all together so far. A good first day showing. I'm sure making lists is more fun than whatever you do during the day so hopefully more on tuesday?
Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 21 December 2010 01:33 (fifteen years ago)
Most ballots have been the full 40 btw. Which is very pleasing!
Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 21 December 2010 01:34 (fifteen years ago)
I've started *staring tracks* I like a lot on the spotify list. All subscribed spotify listeners are free to star tracks too... in case we end up wanting to do a tracks poll after-all that would help make a quick but sturdy base for a nominations list...
no pop, no style -- all simply (Viceroy), Tuesday, 21 December 2010 02:24 (fifteen years ago)
I picked up the Wolf People today based on the good comments so far, but I haven't had a chance to listen to it yet. Kind of weird to see a Jagjaguwar release on this nomination list, but the dude behind the counter was a big fan of Steeple and he usually digs cool metal stuff so I'm guessing it should hit my sweet spot.
one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 21 December 2010 05:05 (fifteen years ago)
Viceroy there didn't appear to be any demand for a tracks poll.
Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 21 December 2010 10:04 (fifteen years ago)
Looks like some more arrived, thanks!
Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 21 December 2010 14:04 (fifteen years ago)
glad to see everyone is posting right after they submit their ballots
i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Tuesday, 21 December 2010 15:32 (fifteen years ago)
yeah, lazy bastards!
Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 21 December 2010 15:40 (fifteen years ago)
The auto reply even asks them to do just that!
Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 21 December 2010 15:40 (fifteen years ago)
I trust ilxor will let us know?
Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 21 December 2010 18:52 (fifteen years ago)
Bill Magill will you be voting this year?
Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 21 December 2010 18:57 (fifteen years ago)
a bill magill ballot is a ballot against slough feg! maybe they'll rank lower as a result?
i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Tuesday, 21 December 2010 19:00 (fifteen years ago)
lol 67 votes -- can't believe we had that thread about "will ilx ppl be interested in a metal poll in 2010"
What are we up to?
Neil S, Saturday, 8 January 2011 19:10 (fifteen years ago)
73!
Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Saturday, 8 January 2011 19:30 (fifteen years ago)
we got a 90+ in the alltime poll so we're not gonna top that, votes peaked yesterday as it was last working day,not had too many today, but last years poll got 50, i think the first one got 30? So it's a great turnout. A lot of alltime voters stuck around which is nice.
Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Saturday, 8 January 2011 19:33 (fifteen years ago)
Anyone got requests for stats?
Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Saturday, 8 January 2011 20:51 (fifteen years ago)
Something that I can show to my colleagues at Metal Hammer proving I'm not a hipster. </jk>
Cracker Flocka Flame (Doran), Saturday, 8 January 2011 20:54 (fifteen years ago)
Show them our disgust at trying to remove the "metal" from their mags name and to shove their defending the faith bullshit up their arse in return then ;)
Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Saturday, 8 January 2011 20:58 (fifteen years ago)
Ah, yeah, that's something I'd probably better not get involved in!
Cracker Flocka Flame (Doran), Saturday, 8 January 2011 21:00 (fifteen years ago)
Some of us have long memories! Did they ever give an explanation about that?
Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Saturday, 8 January 2011 21:11 (fifteen years ago)
was it the editorial team who wanted to change or the publishing company?
Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Saturday, 8 January 2011 21:12 (fifteen years ago)
hmmm... turns out I have a couple of things that I forgot to nominate. just list em all now?
original bgm, Saturday, 8 January 2011 21:53 (fifteen years ago)
6 albums from my list of 30.
original bgm, Saturday, 8 January 2011 21:57 (fifteen years ago)
all pretty firmly in the metal/hardcore camp.
original bgm, Saturday, 8 January 2011 21:57 (fifteen years ago)
XXXP: Erm, I'm pretty sure I don't know a single person who was there back then (when?) so I can't comment. My guess is, it's an entirely different team... publishers included. (It's certainly not since I've been working there... since 2003 but I'm guessing you mean during Nu Metal.)
I mainly write for the Subteranea, extreme metal section about noise and avant garde shit but I'll rep all day and night for Alex Mil@s the editor who is a true gentleman and a pleasure to work for and Jon $elzer, my commissioning editor, who obviously cut his teeth on Melody Maker and Terrorizer and is a good friend but more importantly, really, really knows his shit. Also with writers like Dom Lawson and Joel McIver on board it's pretty much rock solid. It's genuinely my favourite UK metal magazine but obv. Terrorizer comes a close second. Hammer are good people and they've always treated me very well, which is sadly quite a rarity in journalism over here.
There's stuff in it I'm not interested in of course but then I'm a 39-year-old not a teenager/20-something!
I've never even heard of this dropping the "Metal" from the title thing but it sounds like the sort of thing that perhaps got floated by marketing people if it's true.
Even if I was supposing stuff about a magazine that I loathed, I wouldn't credit an editorial team with that much dim-wittedness. I mean, the mag that's always trying to purge the metal is K!...
Cracker Flocka Flame (Doran), Saturday, 8 January 2011 21:58 (fifteen years ago)
... meant to say but even in the case of me disliking K! I know there are some awesome writers on their team but they're hamstrung by a highly corporate atmosphere instigated by Bauer's marketing division.
Cracker Flocka Flame (Doran), Saturday, 8 January 2011 22:01 (fifteen years ago)
oh, just read the rules up top. (duh.) here's the list of stuff that wasn't on the noms google doc:
Abscess - Dawn Of Inhumanity
Ares Kingdom - Incendiary
Bastard Noise - A Culture Of Monsters
Bastard Noise / The Endless Blockade - The Red List (Split)
Starlit - Ataraxis (I think I already mentioned this one?)
Witchery - Witchkrieg
just gonna go ahead and send off my list to ya, kerr. let me know if there are any issues.
original bgm, Saturday, 8 January 2011 22:42 (fifteen years ago)
I think those all look ok. Just beware you will be the only voter for them!
Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Saturday, 8 January 2011 22:47 (fifteen years ago)
Stats I'd like to see, but I don't know how possible they may be:
- how 'obscure' a voters ballot is (this could be based subjectively by the poll-runners or by # of records sold)
- who voted most/highest for what subgenres
- stats on the highest-to-lowest number of votes for bands by country (ie which country is making the best metal, which is making the worst)
I know I was told the country thing would be a big pain in the ass but I still like it as an idea. Just floating it out there... I can't believe we've got this many ballots. Very impressive!
Getting reliable/any sales figures from Japan, Ukraine or Czech is not easy though.
OK, I've got obscurity and various genre breakdowns. Algerian has volunteered to add countries, but he said he's going to do it while watching FA Cup, so don't be surprised if Wales and Scotland show up.
Not worth it , I think only scots band is Black Sun and welsh is Bullet For My Valentine. So United Kingdom it is .
I wanted to, but I only listened to mordy metal this year and there wasn't enough of it to compose a ballot.
I'll probably be on my best behavior because I have no idea what's coming (thus, I won't be disappointed)!
