The Cripples

Easily my favorite discovery of 2002 so far. The Cripples are an amazing "synthtar" band from Seattle that has actually been around for several years, but are finally getting some well deserved attention, via the release of their first record "Dirty Head".

Their secret is to NOT follow the death path of so many one-dimensional Devo/robot rock bands. They're quite experimental, wrote really catchy songs, and have zero pretense. That's probably why I think these guys stand out.. as opposed to, say, their labelmates The Briefs or the Epoxies.

I'm mainly excited, because they happen to hail from the city I live in.

Any other bands local to you that are completely in love with, wish great things for, are super excited about?

(I know, a very general question, but I needed to spread the word here.. heh heh)

Sorry to revive such a long thread, but hey, to the Seattle and Portland folks, they're playing shows this weekend. In seattle, at the Funhouse (formerly Zak's) off 5th st. near Denny this Friday.

They're playing somewhere in Portland this Saturday I forget, but it's on SE Powell(?). I have the email, I just have to dig it up.

But for the Friday Seattle show, let this be a call for an ILM FAP of sorts, if anyone new to the boards here is interested in going...

so im going to see the cripples tonight at the twilight room on db's recommendation. i hope it's good.

last night i went to the multnomah county library sponsered bloodhag show which was hee-larious -- is there anything better than straight laced librarian women getting down to metal grind songs about Gene Wolfe and Isaac Asimov?

OK, at long last, a new Cripples album.. Culture... it's absolutely great... not as pounding as raw sounding as Dirty Head, but the songs are just as great as ever. "Factory", "Make Up Break Up or Fake It", "Butterfly", "Bruises", "The Itch"... I could list the whole album.

Gave it a few more listens. Not as garage sounding as far as recording goes, but tunefully more garage pop... the sound is more crisp than before. I wish I could just YSI the album without being a dick, but here are a few songs from it. Dirtnap Records has it for sale in advance.

* "Deep Throat"
* "Make Up Break Up or Fake It"
* "Bruises"
* "Wide-Eyed"

(change ".mpthree" to ".mp3", etc.)

No major departure here really.. aside from the recording sound comment.

four months pass...
Just got back from their last show ever(?)... damn, I'm wasted. Lotta fun. They score points for doing a cover of Pussy Galore that's about a gazillion times better than the original ("Kill Yourself")

Oh well.. i was dreaming the band would have taken off, but I guess it never happened. :/ *hic*(
