Deerhunter Studio Albums + EPs Poll

These guys seem to have quite the budding discography. I acknowledge there are web-only "releases" as well as various collections of demos, 7" singles, split releases and shit posted on Bradford's blog (all of which I admittedly don't keep up with), so in case something like that is really someone's favorite, I've included an "Other" poll option.

So, what's yr favorite Deerhunter thingy?

Poll Results

OptionVotes
Microcastle (2008) 11
Halcyon Digest (2010) 8
Cryptograms (2007) 5
Fluorescent Grey EP (2007) 4
Weird Era Cont. (2008) 3
Rainwater Cassette Exchange EP (2009) 1
Self-titled / Turn It Up F****t (2005) 0
Other (if you vote for this, pls explain below...) 0

Emily's Cheese, Tuesday, 21 December 2010 04:20 (fifteen years ago)

feel lame voting for the obvious one that will win but i like it a lot

k3vin k., Tuesday, 21 December 2010 04:57 (fifteen years ago)

which one is the obvious one? i'm a stupid fanboy so I think they're all good (never heard the first, actually)

hot lava hair (Z S), Tuesday, 21 December 2010 04:59 (fifteen years ago)

the two things by them that i really dig are microcastle (my vote) & this solo bradford live set (w/ an early version of the panda track on his last album) (this is my favorite airplane music btw)

return of the nakh (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 21 December 2010 05:01 (fifteen years ago)

This is really, really tough. First instinct was the new one because I've become pretty obsessed with it this year, but then I remember how awesome Microcastle is and how much I loved from Weird Era. But the EPs and Cryptograms are also pretty damn solid. Pretty much one of my favorite guys making music right now, between this and the Atlas Sound stuff. In the end I think I have to go for Microcastle though, because "Never Stops" and "Nothing Ever Happened" are such fucking jams.

one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 21 December 2010 05:03 (fifteen years ago)

if I had to rank:

fluorescent
weird era
microcastle
halcyon digest
cryptograms
rainwater
s/t (never heard)

those top 3 are interchangeable pretty much.
man, if you would've included atlas sound stuff on here it would have been super hard to decide (for me at least)

hot lava hair (Z S), Tuesday, 21 December 2010 05:04 (fifteen years ago)

"nothing ever happened" is just ridiculously good

return of the nakh (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 21 December 2010 05:04 (fifteen years ago)

rainwater, then halcyon. microcastle is half filler for me, even despite the 'never'/'nothing' factor

elizabeth pisstake club (electricsound), Tuesday, 21 December 2010 05:06 (fifteen years ago)

rainwater is the only thing i've heard by them that i just can't get into. fluorescent grey, on the other hand, is 4 straight awesome tracks. "Like New" (another lockett track - dude is unstoppable!) is probably my favorite deersoundplaza related release.

hot lava hair (Z S), Tuesday, 21 December 2010 05:08 (fifteen years ago)

The self-titled thing does pretty much suck though, probably only notable for the dude from the Black Lips wang on the cover.

one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 21 December 2010 05:08 (fifteen years ago)

I STILL need to check out the Lotus Plaza album.

it's ok, but i'm more excited to hear his new one that's apparently coming some day. the first LP is good but it's hard to isolate a really great track from it. I'd love to an album from his filled with more song-oriented tracks of the caliber that he donates to Deerhunter.

hot lava hair (Z S), Tuesday, 21 December 2010 05:11 (fifteen years ago)

totally should've included atlas sound stuff ;_;

Nah, I'd rather do that as a separate poll, because WHOA with all the Bedroom demos and blog stuff, overwhelming.

one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 21 December 2010 05:18 (fifteen years ago)

Srsly, what's the "obvious one"? Is it still cryptograms? I'm not really sure what their critical breakthrough was

hot lava hair (Z S), Tuesday, 21 December 2010 05:26 (fifteen years ago)

critical breakthrough could mean cryptograms, microcastle, or halcyon -- depending when u "tuned in"

(same w/ animal collective... i remember when i was like "o man, look at this hot new buzz band, 2004-05, what is this album "sung tongs" -- weirddddd....... little did i know, they were yet to have future critical breakthroughs w/ feels & then strawberry jam & allllso then, merriweather post pavvy, oh dear lord..)

ergo

cryptograms = sung tongs (this is where the "pfork demographic" tunes in)
microcastle/weird era cont. = feels/strawberry jam (this is where the "NPR demographic" tunes in)
halcyon digest = merriweather post pavilion (this is where everyone that metacritic gives a shit about goes fucking apeshit, album is suddenly among the top 5-10 placed of the entire year, and the average non-music nerd hears the band's name in passing, goes to the show & everyone starts saying they really sold out)

What is it people love about this band? I just got Halcyon by them, and it's nice, but I'm really not blown away.

Captain Ostensible (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 21 December 2010 06:48 (fifteen years ago)

you chose the wrong christmas album mothafuckaaaaa

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Tuesday, 21 December 2010 07:08 (fifteen years ago)

(j/k, i agree, halcyon doesnt blow me away either)

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Tuesday, 21 December 2010 07:08 (fifteen years ago)

ZS i meant microcastle

k3vin k., Tuesday, 21 December 2010 11:03 (fifteen years ago)

not the cool\hipster vote, but halcyon has the best songs.

nakamura, Tuesday, 21 December 2010 11:17 (fifteen years ago)

See that's my concern; Halcyon doesn't strike me as having very good somngs. Some of the aesthetic I really like, some of the arrangements and the sound, but the melodies, the emotion, the songwriting - I'm finding that pretty flat. And if Halcyon's his best!

Captain Ostensible (Scik Mouthy), Tuesday, 21 December 2010 11:38 (fifteen years ago)

microcastke

irish xmas caek, get that marzipan inta ya (a hoy hoy), Tuesday, 21 December 2010 11:50 (fifteen years ago)

Microcastle/Weird Era, which should be counted as one. I think I'll always place it highest cos it's the Deerhunter "White Album".

1st record needs all the love it can get tho.

Telephoneface (Adam Bruneau), Tuesday, 21 December 2010 13:00 (fifteen years ago)

eh not really. the first record sounds like Unwound or some shit. which is fine (I love Unwound!), but it was sort of a letdown when I bought it after a show where they played stuff that would end up on Cryptograms and totally blew me away

precisely! voted microcastle, but the two taken together > most other indie rock albums from the last few years.

i can kind of understand this but it's still a total grower--they have a way with really simple melodies and really simple rock beats that i find pretty striking.

cryptograms. i still haven't been able to take much satisfaction in their songwriting when it doesn't come in the form of spacy noisy jams.

j., Sunday, 26 December 2010 01:55 (fifteen years ago)

I like Flourescent Grey
Best four songs they've written

ARP 2600 vs. Atari 2600 (Ówen P.), Sunday, 26 December 2010 04:12 (fifteen years ago)

everything kinda sucks after fluorescent grey/cryptograms

don't get the crazy affection for their newer shit

I like Flourescent Grey

title-track is an epic rock song.

Rainwater Cassette Exchange EP (2009) 1

this you, then, i take it?

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 27 December 2010 02:51 (fifteen years ago)

nah I went with Cryptograms in the end, but it was a tough call btw that and Microcastle — which, honestly I got no problem with it winning; I just wish the results hadn't been so (predictably?) heavily skewed towards the last 2 albums
