God yeah, Groundhogs, Cat stevens, Georgio Vs Talla, you just knew they'd be on there didn't you.

mikeB, Wednesday, 21 August 2002 08:54 (twenty-three years ago)

i should say..predictable if you`d read the Mojo feature on them last year

Tariq, Wednesday, 21 August 2002 09:01 (twenty-three years ago)

beep beep - who got the keys to the jeep?

David, Wednesday, 21 August 2002 17:23 (twenty-three years ago)

I like some of those songs, especially "Cherry Red". What is this thread about?

"Back to Mine" are a series of compilations that imagine a big name DJ or artist taking the party back to his/her place for a chill out session; putting on they're favorite late night tracks. It's a chance for the artist to exhibit eclecticism, for better or worse. Like other chill-out stuff it can be pretty boring, but this one sounds really grate! I'm imagining the face of some yuppie as he tries to woo a date to "when I saw mushroom head, I was born and I was....dead". Actually it's oddly appropriate. Now everyone go download the Mary Chain version!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 22 August 2002 01:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Its a fine compilation, better than the others in the series and covering a nice range of diverse musics. Track 02 sucks, mind.

And of course its 'Predictable' - only an idiot makes a list of their favourite records based on 'unpredictability' rather than 'how much they like them'.

Sandy Blair, Thursday, 22 August 2002 06:36 (twenty-three years ago)

Couldn't agree more. What usually happens with these comps is bands feel need to prove their muso credentials by digging out "neglected gems". Fine if they were, but these almost alway turn out to be more obscure than the "obvious" stuff for good reason: they are not very good.

ArfArf, Thursday, 22 August 2002 09:49 (twenty-three years ago)

Are any of the other Back To Mine compilations any good? Someone told me good things about the Orbital one, but I'm unconvinced.

And is the Another Late Night series in the same vein?

Clive, Thursday, 22 August 2002 11:58 (twenty-three years ago)

It's a good list but chill out? Back to mine for whiskey and drugs more like with that tracklist.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 22 August 2002 12:01 (twenty-three years ago)

Ronan, I suppose it depends on what one does to chill out. Actually the more recent 'back to mine' comps are less downtempo than the earlier ones.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 22 August 2002 15:47 (twenty-three years ago)

whats better - Back To Mine or Another Late Night - oh wait they're exactly the same

and what about DJ Kicks...?

blueski, Thursday, 22 August 2002 19:38 (twenty-three years ago)

Orbital's Back To Mine isn't exactly a chill album in *that* sense of the word, either. With that one it's more like back to mine for some drunken shit-talking. A nice change of pace. I wouldn't actually call it downtempo - and it looks like the New Order one is in a similar vein.

patrick, Friday, 23 August 2002 09:47 (twenty-three years ago)

What's the Orbital one like? I looked at it, but couldn't bring myself to buy it. Which is stoopid, really.

nickie (nickie), Friday, 23 August 2002 11:21 (twenty-three years ago)

It's hard to explain what it's like. Let's just say the Hartnolls have very, very eclectic tastes. You might think it would sound similar to Orbital's own style, but it really does not. It covers everything from Plaid to Tangerine Dream to PJ Harvey to Jethro Tull, believe it or not.

patrick, Saturday, 24 August 2002 13:51 (twenty-three years ago)

That Orbital one looks awesome especially since it has the best rave song ever: Eon's "Spice".

Also, I think that chill-out/lounge albums have been frowned upon around here (not challenging enough - too yuppie and dinnerpartyish), but there are good ones. You can do far worse than pick up the first 2 Hotel Costes cds (the others are good not grate), which are just plain sexier than the cafe-del-mar/ibiza/flogging ones. Friends will ask you what it is and will think you're master mellow DJ. It's not to say you wouldn't rather play "Ambition" by Subway Sect and then play them the vinyl only Mary Chain cover, but they probably don't want to eat to it.

one year passes...
You know, I'd never heard "Cherry Red" before and it's inclusion is pretty illuminating especially with regards to Joy Division song structure.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 20 November 2003 00:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the Morcheeba Back To Mine compilation more than I like anything they've ever done on their own.

The Fabriclive: John peel one is cool.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 20 November 2003 10:04 (twenty-two years ago)

This is on the jukebox in my local boozer, allowing me to inflict Beefheart, the Groundhogs and Can on my fellow drinkers every time I visit it.

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 20 November 2003 10:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Underworld's 'Back To Mine' is cool
