lesser-known stuff is good b/c I'm a little burned out on France Gall right now (if that's at all possible).

I'll start off with Liz Brady, who's kinda the Brenda Lee of French pop, in terms of stage presence at least.

ah, thanks for all those. I've heard very little Spanish ye-ye, so those are all new to me. I love the point about 30 seconds into the Rosalia song where the violin and vocals drop out momentarily and a reverby, surf-like (or flamenco-like? I dunno) guitar plays a quick 5-second run just before the chorus hits. it's a really cleverly arranged song that balances garage rock rawness with slick bubblegum production values. call it American pop-rock filtered through French sensibilities filtered through Spanish sensibilities, if that makes sense.

youtube may not have the Alicia Grandos song you're looking for, but these two tracks are delightfully brainless teenpop gems imho:

I'm not generally into this stuff (not that I've heard all that much of it), but I'm currently listening to Swinging Mademoiselles Deux, which I borrowed from someone, and it's the perfect background music for this particular moment. I'm feeling a personal return to 60s/70s music coming on, so this could be something else to pursue, at least to the extent of clicking on some of these youtube links.

_Rudipherous_, Saturday, 25 December 2010 19:35 (fifteen years ago)

the tracklisting on that Swinging Mademoiselles comp looks really solid, although it's apparently a knockoff of the vinyl-only Swinging Mademoiselle (singular) compilations from a decade ago.

I'm going through a similar phase, which is obvious I'm sure. there's a good deal of unpleasantly kitchy or exploitative or just plain unremarkable music in this genre, but it's no worse than American bubblegum pop from the same era. I guess my inability to understand potentially dated/sexist/ridiculous lyrics allows me to love and appreciate the musically inspired stuff more, even though I miss out somewhat on the context. tbf "Les Sucettes" sounds no better or worse to me than it did before I learned it was Serge's pervy ode to cocksucking.

it seems like the only place that has lyrics for a lot of these artists (aside from the big names like Gall and Hardy and Vartan) is this online French radio station, which is a great place to stumble upon new old music.

Clothilde's discography (all 8 songs of it) is highly, highly recommended if you're into the weirder elements of ye-ye. these are her two most famous songs and the ones that people tend to gush over:

I assumed that "Superlipoppete" was about a super little popstar, but a crappy automatic translation of it (original lyrics here) yields this, after a bit of touching up:

"Goodness me! Exclaims the shrimp.
"Why am I away from the ocean?
I find myself stupid
Alone in a plate
And what's more, I now have a toothache!"

Blueberries and quackgrass
Sure do not grow, ha ha
In the same field

"Goodness me! "said the weasel.
"I want to see a beautician.
I've made up my mind:
A turned-up nose
Will give me a Roman profile!"

Blueberries and quackgrass
Sure do not grow, ha ha
In the same field

"Gooodness me!" cries the doe, [or is it a goat?]
Her milk turned into white cheese.
Because at the cottage
It is his feast day,
And she has not written her will!

Blueberries and quackgrass
Sure does not grow, ha ha
In the same field

Goodness me! Where did I get the notion
To want to sing this song?
It is not so stupid
Or even nonsensical.
Everyone understands their own way.

Blueberries and quackgrass
Sure do not grow, ha ha
In the same field

I don't know if the lyrics are anywhere near as bizarre and wonderful and perfectly suited to the music in their original French.

this seems to be Mr. Libreville himself lip-syncing to his own 45-year-old song while waving around a hand puppet. it's hard to find much biographical info on him, but he recorded an EP with Germinal Tenas (the producer behind Les Problèmes, Clothilde, and Christine Delaroche) in 1966 and has presumably done nothing but copious amounts of LSD since then.

Ganaël - Le kifumoir

Kief [i.e. powdered marijuana] in your roast
Hashish in your chickpeas
Opium in your rum
LSD in your tea
heroin sandwich
Cocaine in your Blédine [a brand of baby formula]

I do everything to distract you
I dance, I walk backwards
But you prepare your recipes of the Cordon Bleu [a cooking school]
With kief
In one month you aged ten years
You have to ring his neck
Which are not those of love
Because of you I no longer want kief

And you refuse my cuddles
When I hang around your neck
You leave your cookbook
And you lock yourself in your hole
In one month, you have destroyed everything
You've shot your life too
I want to be your Melusine
And get you out of your kitchen

Your roast, grill it without kief
Make your chickpeas without hashish
And your tea without LSD

Lalalala ...

I hate to use a tired expression like "rams the raw throat right into the mic," but it's true: she really rams the raw throat right into the mic after sounding so shy and quivery at the beginning.

Ouch! Oh! That's good!
Come on, drink your castor oil..
(Baaah! It's fatty!)
Finish this litre, little girl...
(Yes, but no more, OK?)
And then burn my chest...
(With whaaaat?)
With the tip of your cigarette!
(It smells like roast pork!)
To swallow a spider...
You're always getting into trouble...
(Always spiders!)
To finish your mouthful...
(OK, but this is the last one!)
You see, it's not that bad!
(That's what you think!)

(Sado maso, sado maso)
Aaaaah! Oh! That's good!
(Sado...)

It's your turn to be whipped...
(Oh, yes!)
Quickly, bring me the switch...
(Ah! How I love that!)
After that, you can stick me...
(What, my love?)
With all these pins in my chest!
(That will be tremendous!)
You need to eat your purée...
Of fat cockroaches and slugs!
(I prefer beetles)
Don't look so disgusted...
(I'd like to see you try!)
Please, I beg you, no grimacing!
(Your slugs ain't fresh!)

AaaaAAAgh! It's good!
I cannot cut...
(What's the problem?)
Your ear with my scissors...
(Not a chance!)
Too bad, we'll go back our bed...
(That's right!)
Of broken bottles!
(There's no time to lose!)
Let me slash your back...
With a vegetable peeler!
(A little lower!)
Then write me your number again...
(With what, my dear?)
With a pen and ink tattoo!
(You're crazy, eh?)

AaaaaaaAAAaaah! That's good!

AaaaAAAAaah! Oh! That's tremendous!

Ah! That's terrific!
Ah! That's terrible!

xpost - glad you liked it! I can't imagine the "Sado Maso" video (or even the song itself, for that matter) being very widely seen even in 1968, so that's the magic of youtube, I guess. it's funny how a song called "Sado Maso" manages to be so thoroughly unsexy, albeit hilarious and awesome.

b-side of a fun horn-rock single Patsy Gallant released about a decade before she was a disco diva. it has a real blown out, distorted "loudness wars" sound to it (and I'm pretty sure it isn't just the quality of the mp3 at play), especially during the organ-drum freakout in the outro.
