The Liars: Search or Destroy?

I like the album, though I'm not sure it has the vitality of Gang of Four. It has the bass-crunchin' of RHCP though, haha. I'm not gonna say what I said here though the more I listen... *twinge*

New answers page? Without having to make up some silly flip flop sentence, put it in inverted commas and then put it in between New & Answers? Amazing.

I've just sat and listened to a run-out groove for, *checks*, 23 mins without noticing...

Why are so many reviews lately all "Gang of Four" this, "Gang of Four" that? They're not the only band who played in that style -- use other bands please. Anyway, I'd compare 'em more to the Fall -- they've got that literate/alienatingly snarky sense of humor and their rhythms aren't as dense as Gang of Four's.

I think the album's great -- it's one of the few times in recent memory that a spectacular live act has transferred so beautifully to recorded form. If you haven't seen 'em live, you can really imagine Angus the very tall Australian redneck falling all over himself, jumping off stage to freak out the audience, etc.

I agree. "Pavement? Fuck off you pompous twunt!"

I have seen the Liars maybe 5 or 6 times and I detested them every single time... up until the Siren Music Festival show. For some reason I dug it there. Maybe it was me being drunk and the sun, I dunno. But the record really is good. I wanted to hate it, but it really grew on me.

As someone who mentioned GoF in his review of the Liars album (for Pulse), I think it's absolutely kosher (ha!) to reference them. How can you not hear that in "Mr Your on Fire Mr?" Of course other bands nailed the post-punk/disco sound as well, but when you are writing for a mainstream mag, you need to mention the most obvious reference point if you're going to bring one up at all. For that subgenre, it is unquestionably GoF.

I too have seen them 5 or 6 times and thought they were amazing everytime, in fact better with each show. The siren show was ok, sorta out of context, with the beach and the sunset and all! I am surprised nobody is picking up on The Jesus Lizard references.
The album is good, but live they are bad-ass!!

I'm seeing them next month. I've never heard a single track but Gang of Four/PiL comparisons are promising at least, and they're playing with the YeahYeahYeahs.

agree with Yancy. First time I saw Liars, i was initially drawn into the visual spectical of a 6'6 Aussie doubling over in pain it seemed, while wrapped up in a hand made quilt. I thought they were kinda sloppy to tell you the truth, so i didn't think twice about buying the album. But as soon as i grabbed it, i was hooked. Tracks 1,2,3, search. Track 9, destroy. A real bad drone piece.
