fun to have a list like this of just stuff played on actual R&B stations, no Taio Bruno DeRulo type ish, although some of the grown & sexy headwrap stuff on here isn't exactly thrilling.

"window seat" over (no order) "the unthinkable", "ride", "soldier of love" and "i like"

haven't heard several tho

k3vin k., Thursday, 30 December 2010 22:48 (fifteen years ago)

yeah this is an excellent poll al this will give me an excuse to fill in some gaps, i'm sure i'll love a couple more of these

k3vin k., Thursday, 30 December 2010 22:49 (fifteen years ago)

idk why i included "the unthinkable" in there tbh - i decided mid-post i was only gonna include the ones i really liked and forgot to take it out

where's lloyd

i dunno, i thought "list was made with a general eye on what rap songs did best on charts & radio this year, whether R&B radio or pop radio, whether considered 'real' rap or not" was a good policy tbh

The Reverend, Thursday, 30 December 2010 22:53 (fifteen years ago)

Jaheim song is really dope:

i thought it made sense for the rap poll since there weren't really that many rap songs getting played on R&B radio a ton this year, and regular-ass non-crossover rap got most of the votes anyway. but since regular-ass R&B has been kind of marginalized this year i thought it'd be cool to highlight it with its own poll. we could do another poll of douchey top 40 jersey shore faux-R&B though.

broke pretty recently and Billboard EOY lists go from Dec to Nov so there's an emphasis on stuff that's been out longer. if i was gonna bother to add in songs not on the list that obv would've been a big one, though.

hann am0n tana (some dude), Thursday, 30 December 2010 23:03 (fifteen years ago)

i gave Migel a 4 on Singles Jukebox...just think it's kinda whiny and aimless.

hann am0n tana (some dude), Thursday, 30 December 2010 23:05 (fifteen years ago)

will never understand why rev does not fuck with jeremih

k3vin k., Thursday, 30 December 2010 23:05 (fifteen years ago)

i do tho? i haven't heard that joint tho.

The Reverend, Thursday, 30 December 2010 23:07 (fifteen years ago)

i repped the fuck outta "birthday sex" iirc

The Reverend, Thursday, 30 December 2010 23:07 (fifteen years ago)

i loved jeremih's first album but didn't really feel his stuff this year as much.

i feel like i've already repped for a lot of these songs already, and that my choices here will surprise no one, but here goes:

1. ciara ft. ludacris - ride
2. sade - soldier of love
3. erykah badu - window seat
4. jazmine sullivan - holding you down (goin' in circles)
5. willow smith - whip my hair
6. rihanna - rude boy
7. trey songz ft. nicki minaj - bottoms up
8. alicia keys - un-thinkable (i'm ready)
9. fantasia - bittersweet
10. corinne bailey rae - closer
11. toni braxton - hands tied

Keri Hilson - "Pretty Girl Rock"

This is getting lots of DC airplay now. Found parts of this bouncy pop-friendly cut annoying, but it's grown on me and that hook sticks with you whether you like it or not.

curmudgeon, Friday, 31 December 2010 15:45 (fifteen years ago)

Soldier of Love
Window Seat
Un-Thinkable
Champagne Life
Rude Boy
Everything to Me
Whip My Hair
Holdin' You Down
Can't Be Friends
Finding My Way Back

Ain't Leavin' got/gets played so often that I don't think I will ever want to hear it, Ring Ring Ring, or Help Is on the Way ever again.

My favorite low-performing single was Monica's Here I Am.

Andy K, Friday, 31 December 2010 16:11 (fifteen years ago)

Great year imo; any of these 15 could make my top twenty singles, but top six are:
Willow Smith - "Whip My Hair"
Rihanna - "Rude Boy"
Ciara f/ Ludacris - "Ride"
Trey Songz f/ Nicki Minaj - "Bottoms Up"
Ne-Yo - "Champagne Life"
Miguel f/ J. Cole - "All I Want Is You"

and then:
Trey Songz - "Neighbors Know My Name"
Chris Brown f/ Tyga and Kevin McCall - "Deuces"
Fantasia - "Bittersweet"
Usher f/ Nicki Minaj - "Lil Freak"
Sade - "Soldier Of Love"
Jazmine Sullivan f/ Missy Elliott - "Holdin' You Down (Goin' In Circles)"
Erykah Badu - "Window Seat"
Corinne Bailey Rae - "Closer"
Jeremih f/ Ludacris - "I Like"

predeep natsvitika (forksclovetofu), Friday, 31 December 2010 16:26 (fifteen years ago)

pretty solid year

my list

1. window seat
2. whip my hair
3. ride
4. un-thinkable
5. bottoms up
6. rude boy
7. soldier of love
8. find your love
9. neighbors know my name
10. i like

the two on here that i actively hate are "champagne life" & "daddy's home" -- "deuces" is close enough but the beat is great

i dont keep up w/ the radio like i used to but this song creates such a cognitive dissonance to me w/ the hook vs. sample vs. dudes voice, like my brain is about to blow up

lyrics is weak ... like clock radio similes (deej), Friday, 31 December 2010 17:54 (fifteen years ago)

imo "Ain't Leavin Without You" and "Holdin You Down" are both scraping the bottom of the barrel of trading on the goodwill of overused samples with annoying songs over the top of them, more than anything makes me kind of glad those sorts of songs aren't as commonplace on R&B radio as they used to be

hann am0n tana (some dude), Saturday, 1 January 2011 01:40 (fifteen years ago)

Circles suffers from Missy screaming all over it but it's a real grower

predeep natsvitika (forksclovetofu), Saturday, 1 January 2011 16:48 (fifteen years ago)

the Missy hypeman stuff is fine by me, i just think the beat and the vocal feel a little pasted together and all over the place.

i'm kind of excited that i genuinely don't know what will win this poll. will be middle fingers up to everyone if it's "Ride" though.

washa flocka brain (some dude), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 03:08 (fifteen years ago)

i regret not putting "bottoms up" on my year-end; atoning by voting for it here

Monica - "Love All Over Me" 0

honestly thought this song was a jam

╰㊂-㊂╯ (Lamp), Friday, 7 January 2011 04:14 (fifteen years ago)

the lyric about her skin changing ruins the entire song for me

teledyldonix, Friday, 7 January 2011 07:55 (fifteen years ago)

imo that song got way better when i realized how easily the lyrics can be interpreted to be about bukkake
