Happy Metal New Year everyone!

Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Saturday, 1 January 2011 00:02 (fourteen years ago)

I'm really excited for the new Amon Amarth. Always a dependable group. Also, you guys should keep an eye out for the new Crowbar -- crushingly good sludge.

ooh - new Wolf record! Liked the last one quite a bit.

EZ Snappin, Saturday, 1 January 2011 00:16 (fourteen years ago)

Amon Amarth is the big one of early 2011, that's for sure. Bodom too, but my expectations aren't as high.

One that's been a nice surprise is the new Korpiklaani, it's their strongest album in years.

And Ken Mode's new one slays...working with Kurt Ballou was a smart decision.

A. Begrand, Saturday, 1 January 2011 02:56 (fourteen years ago)

That might be a different Wolf than you're thinking about, EZ.

That's life in the world of shadows, Garkun. (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Saturday, 1 January 2011 03:07 (fourteen years ago)

Not the Swedish Wolf? Bummer.

Glad to hear the Korpiklaani is good - I'm up for a refresh as I'm still spinning 2007's Terveskanto.

EZ Snappin, Saturday, 1 January 2011 03:17 (fourteen years ago)

Band I'd like to hear return that haven't released anything recent but havent quit officially:
- Summoning
- Mayhem
- Gorgoroth
- Trelldom
- Coldworld
- Bloodbath
- Kampfar
- Mütiilation
- Wigrid
- Totalselfhatred

Siegbran, Saturday, 1 January 2011 12:49 (fourteen years ago)

there's a new impiety album, siegbran. i haven't heard it yet.

scott seward, Saturday, 1 January 2011 13:55 (fourteen years ago)

New Kampfar in March. Kvass still gets regular spins from me. I love the triumphant VIking metal!

Brooker T Buckingham, Saturday, 1 January 2011 22:54 (fourteen years ago)

Kampfar is one of those bands I love to death, even more so because the last few albums have not been stone cold classics (like Mellom Skogkledde Aaser certainly is), but it is one of those bands that could just come up with an amazing record out of nowhere, like Arckanum or Svartsyn.

Impiety on the other hand I'm not as excited about - another band I enjoy a lot but they release so much material that I feel like I can predict *exactly* how it will sound and how good it will be.

And?

progspeed you! black metallers (aldo), Sunday, 2 January 2011 16:03 (fourteen years ago)

I'm only on the 1st track Old Black but it's a very good track so far.

Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Sunday, 2 January 2011 16:04 (fourteen years ago)

No great stylistic change tho except for the violin which is a nice addition.

Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Sunday, 2 January 2011 16:05 (fourteen years ago)

or is it a cello.

Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Sunday, 2 January 2011 16:05 (fourteen years ago)

great cover. but i don't really need to hear another earth album.

call all destroyer, Sunday, 2 January 2011 16:10 (fourteen years ago)

i think i need to hear this.

69 65 51 46 (Ioannis), Sunday, 2 January 2011 18:00 (fourteen years ago)

Found it, will listen later or maybe tomorrow. Expect it to sound like Earth.

progspeed you! black metallers (aldo), Sunday, 2 January 2011 18:10 (fourteen years ago)

Checking out the Earth disc now.

that's not funny. (unperson), Sunday, 2 January 2011 19:11 (fourteen years ago)

It's pretty good even if it's not a drastic change of direction

Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Sunday, 2 January 2011 19:38 (fourteen years ago)

Wait is that new? Because unlike cad, I think I really do need to hear another Earth album.

no pop, no style -- all simply (Viceroy), Sunday, 2 January 2011 19:56 (fourteen years ago)

also that's a great fucking cover!

no pop, no style -- all simply (Viceroy), Sunday, 2 January 2011 19:57 (fourteen years ago)

It's okay, but as has been said already, it's not a drastic change of pace and it's almost impossible to tell one piece from another. I dunno. I might try and get someone to write about them for Burning Ambulance (speak up if you're interested), but it's not exactly giving me priapism.

that's not funny. (unperson), Sunday, 2 January 2011 20:07 (fourteen years ago)

They dont make bad albums. It's a pretty solid good album that will be ignored with some because it's nothing new.

Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Sunday, 2 January 2011 20:20 (fourteen years ago)

earth were once the most fascinating "boring" band going, so it's a bummer that they've become the most boring "fascinating" band going

contenderizer, Sunday, 2 January 2011 20:30 (fourteen years ago)

The new Austrasian Goat album is immense. Possibly his best yet.

Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Sunday, 2 January 2011 20:31 (fourteen years ago)

classic band name at the very least

markers, Sunday, 2 January 2011 20:40 (fourteen years ago)

Are you going to actually listen to metal this year?

Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Sunday, 2 January 2011 20:47 (fourteen years ago)

yes yes

markers, Sunday, 2 January 2011 20:48 (fourteen years ago)

good good. Then you can listen to the entire top 100 from the ~~~~VOTE IN THE 2010 ALBUMS OF THE YEAR (METAL EDITION) POLL~~~ Voting Ends Sunday Jan 9th poll.

You all now have 1 week left to vote. 40 ballots in already, hopefully we can top the 50 of last year. So if you haven't voted, please do!

Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Sunday, 2 January 2011 20:53 (fourteen years ago)

yeah I just listened to that Austrasian Goat album... last.fm indicated that it was like funeral doom but it sounded like progressive black metal to me... Anyway it was pretty fucking great!

I might take you up on that offer ph1l, if I have enough to say about the album after I've heard it -- which might not be the case, heh.

no pop, no style -- all simply (Viceroy), Sunday, 2 January 2011 21:46 (fourteen years ago)

its a mix of bm,doom and things. He likes to mix it up, but I'd say its closer to bm than anything.

Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Sunday, 2 January 2011 21:53 (fourteen years ago)

earth were once the most fascinating "boring" band going, so it's a bummer that they've become the most boring "fascinating" band going

slouching, unshaven, thick-necked, unstylish, pig-eyed (ilxor), Sunday, 2 January 2011 22:49 (fourteen years ago)

i mean, that makes for a good soundbyte-- but it's not true

slouching, unshaven, thick-necked, unstylish, pig-eyed (ilxor), Sunday, 2 January 2011 22:50 (fourteen years ago)

There are definite changes from the last album to this one (no trombone, no organ, no Bill Frisell, the addition of cello). I think it's more of-a-piece than the last one. But I'm not sure that's a good thing, as - again - it's difficult to tell individual tracks apart. It all becomes a single 60-minute blur, and it's extremely difficult to pick out memorable moments when it's over.

that's not funny. (unperson), Sunday, 2 January 2011 22:52 (fourteen years ago)

the most boring "fascinating" band going

If we're staying within the confines of metal its close cousins I would have to give that moniker to Boris. But I have always been bored to tears by them.

no pop, no style -- all simply (Viceroy), Sunday, 2 January 2011 23:38 (fourteen years ago)

"Old Black" is the only song on the Earth album that grabs me, love that track. The rest leaves me on the bored side.

A. Begrand, Monday, 3 January 2011 04:12 (fourteen years ago)

Old Black is definitely the best track on the album. The rest isn't boring so much as what Ph1l said -- more of the same... which is a good thing if you like Earth, IMO. I dunno, nothing seemed too rote or by the numbers. How exciting can you expect noodley psych-drone stuff to get? Its supposed to chill you out.

no pop, no style -- all simply (Viceroy), Monday, 3 January 2011 06:07 (fourteen years ago)

The most satisfying thing about "Old Black" is that it sounds exactly how you'd expect a song called "Old Black" to sound. Shakey fans who've heard this know what I mean.

A. Begrand, Monday, 3 January 2011 09:00 (fourteen years ago)

A new Earth record and we're bringing up ol' Neil as a comparison? Can't wait to hear that track!

one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 3 January 2011 14:29 (fourteen years ago)

It all becomes a single 60-minute blur

isn't this the point of pretty much every worthwhile Earth album?

slouching, unshaven, thick-necked, unstylish, pig-eyed (ilxor), Monday, 3 January 2011 14:33 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, i dig it plenty.

69 65 51 46 (Ioannis), Monday, 3 January 2011 17:12 (fourteen years ago)

(no trombone, no organ, no Bill Frisell, the addition of cello)

despite loving earth and just about everything they've done, reading that kinda bums me out.

also, I have apparently been mistakenly thinking that bill LASWELL produced the last earth LP until I just read that sentence!

original bgm, Monday, 3 January 2011 21:03 (fourteen years ago)

which makes more sense because I kind of hate bill laswell.

original bgm, Monday, 3 January 2011 21:04 (fourteen years ago)

Did someone mention the band Owen Hart near the end of the 2010 thread? I'm really enjoying their new album...I can see the Converge style vox rubbing some purists the wrong way, but I think it's fine, it at least matches the intensity of the circa-'84 Slayer riffage.

A. Begrand, Monday, 3 January 2011 21:23 (fourteen years ago)

Hot damn, the new Turisas actually lives up to the album cover.

Doomsday Derelict (J3ff T.), Tuesday, 4 January 2011 03:22 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, on the bonus CD of the Born Again reissue Gillan absolutely kills on the new stuff. It's like night and day.

3 songs deep and i'm really digging the new arizmenda (without circumference nor center)

rusty_allen, Thursday, 10 November 2011 03:31 (thirteen years ago)

just fyi in re that sarcofago, it's a myth that picture discs are necessarily of lower pressing quality than normal vinyl. not that you should pay 45 bones for it, but there's nothing inherently bad about the quality of a picture disc. (however, enough people think there is that people shouldn't probably press them up except as collector items.)

unlistenable in philly (underrated aerosmith bootlegs I have owned), Thursday, 10 November 2011 03:46 (thirteen years ago)

the ravencult on hells headbangers has prob quickly become my most listened to 2011 metal record. nothing new on it and every song basically sounds the same but this is no-frills black metal of very high quality and the lp just never lets up. I think the subtle motorhead vibe is what really seals the deal for me.

original bgm, Thursday, 10 November 2011 04:19 (thirteen years ago)

"subtle" of course being a relative term when talking about a record called "morbid blood"

original bgm, Thursday, 10 November 2011 04:24 (thirteen years ago)

it's a myth that picture discs are necessarily of lower pressing quality than normal vinyl.

This is definitely true these days, but I've actually seen older pic discs that had a warning to the effect that they sounded worse!

Metallica will be headlining the Download Festival next summer, which takes place between 8-10 June.

Drummer Lars Ulrich confirmed the band's return to the annual rock festival on Zane Lowe's Radio 1 show.

"In hard rock history, there's no more sacred place to play than Donington [Park]. It's the coolest," he said.

The band will perform their Metallica album, also known as The Black Album, in its entirety to coincide with the 21st anniversary of its release.

The band last performed at Download Festival in 2006.

"For me, coming back there is very special," the drummer added.

Metallica fans will see the band play three songs never performed before.

The tracks are The Struggle Within, My Friend Of Misery and Don't Tread On Me.

Joking with Zane Lowe, Lars Ulrich said: "I know the world is definitely waiting for [Don't Tread On Me]. Wow. We have to rehearse."

(Algerian Goalkeeper) Vs (Armand Schaubroeck Ratfucker), Friday, 11 November 2011 12:28 (thirteen years ago)

Roadrunner has signed Gojira. They're recording their new album now; it'll be out in the spring, probably.

A reformed Black Sabbath, including lead singer Ozzy Osbourne, have been announced as the second headliners for next year's Download Festival.

The band, who last played together at Donington Park in 2005 as part of the Ozzfest touring festival, will then embark on a world tour.

21st Anniversary? That has to be the lamest excuse ever to play this record.

I had all but given up on Blut Aus Nord, who had come to sound to me like they only actually had one measure of music. But wow, this new album is pretty arresting. Dunno what I'll end up thinking of it, but it's certainly not the same measure of noise repeated.

I'm also glad I decided to give the new Warbringer album a second chance. It sounds uncannily like slightly-cleaned-up old Slayer, but after listening to it all the way through, I've decided that's OK.

thought about writing something stupid about how i think "death metal is about tradition" (not a new or special thought but one i return to) and once in a while you get a death metal record that seems to restate that tradition so expertly and the whole experience just makes your heart swell, yeah. feelin' that with this record

give the whole album your time if you have it -- it's really a journey, to be corny about it. that's a lot of what I love about it, that it sort of takes you into the world of these guys' music. it's a total environment, gets me every time.
