last night we had a punky punk show at the store. in the basement. the big kids played. love them. olde tyme hardcore. abby rocks the vocals. abby did this awesome book called Punk House that everyone should own. she brought along two bands from worcester. they were more modern. sounded nice and loud even upstairs where i had to be most of the time. its cool to hear loud music coming up through the heating vents. and the floor shakes. nice crowd. 20+ people? something like that. after the show i went around the corner to a house show. i was kinda drunk. then i got drunker. i missed my pal shea's set. shea is cool and from maine and friends with like-minded weirdos idm theftable and crank sturgeon. then jeremy aka red favorite played and he is so dreamy. but i was drunk and he was so dreamy and quiet upstairs i felt like i had to go downstairs in case i started yelling or something. man, he can really play the guitar. he has a great album on christoph heeman's record label. then ladyjam played behind lace and white sheets with some movie projected on the sheets and they were droney bliss and i started to drift off and i was scared that i might have been snoring on the couch, but the guy next to me - a filmmaker from brooklyn who seemed very nice - said i had only been snoring a little bit. then i got a ride home. missed the last act.

Saw Matthew Shipp's trio on Thursday night. As always, they played one hour-long medley including standards, a couple of Shipp's own compositions, a bass solo and a drum solo. It was good but the drummer, Whit Dickey, was over-miced and played super-aggressively, so much so that it was kind of distracting at times.

that's not funny. (unperson), Sunday, 16 January 2011 16:42 (fourteen years ago)

oh my god he was overrun by mice!? that's horrible!

oh okay i get what you mean now...

The Haxan Cloak / The Larsen Effect @ The Outer Church at Komedia Studio Bar, Brighton, UK

Got a showing of Graham Reznick's surreal psychological horror 'I Can See You' (2008) as well, The Haxan Cloak had the second half of the film as a backdrop during his pretty great giallo soundtrack influenced drone type set. Wasn't so keen on The Larsen Effect, remind me of some of the more cosmic moments of Six Organs Of Admittance but I wasn't feeling it on the night.

see, jeremy who played last night was kinda goblin-esque at times. he played a guitar and had a synth backing track.

cool looking set-up above.

I saw Wire a couple of months ago but unfortunately I don't remember that much about the set list because I foolishly met up with an old friend who happened to be in London that day and was quite drunk by the time I got to the gig. They played a mix of recent and old stuff from what I remember, the old stuff more like Chairs Missing/154 era than Pink Flag.

All I've got lined up so far this year is there's a punk weekender on next weekend, I'm going Saturday to see Zounds, Anthrax (UK) and the Disrupters. And I'm going to see Man... Or Astro-Man? in LA in Feb.

And then there's the London Popfest end of Feb with the Pooh Sticks, 14 Iced Bears and Monochrome Set.

Wow I really do only go to see reformed old bands these days huh?

a fucking stove just fell on my foot. (Colonel Poo), Sunday, 16 January 2011 18:59 (fourteen years ago)

Jealous of the Popfest attendance, was half planning to go then found it had sold out. Great lineup for the Saturday too (Eux Autres, Bearsuit, Monochrome Set, etc). Hopefully going to the below next Saturday if I still have any money left.

Aye, I could only really feasibly do the Saturday due to work issues and stuff.

Made it along to see The Vaselines on Thursday.. hadn't considered until a few days before as it was I think £14 on the door but we ended up putting up the supports so got a freebie. Enjoyed them far more than I expected, I've never really got into them properly on record but they were great. Lots of bawdy between-song banter but they eased up a bit on that after a while. Not entirely packed out but a decent crowd at that price.

some photies

Out tonight for I'm Being Good/King Alfred, Man Of Leisure/Bad Orb. Bad Orb was excellent last month, a one woman queasy folk drone turn with tapes out on Total Vermin. An ex-Polly Shang Kuan Band member to boot.

Hardly ever go to shows anymore - used to see over 100 a year back in the day. I travel to even less. But I sure am looking forward to seeing Agalloch in Baltimore in March...

three months pass...

Was remiss in not bringing the attention of US ILMers to the Radian tour, they are a groovy Vienna-based instrumental post-rock kind of thing. They've been through Chicago, Philadelphia, NYC and a few other places already and the tour winds up tonight in DC.
