I don't think I've listened to many of these albums all the way through, but here goes:

* "avalon" - roxy music (listening to "more than this" obsessively since I heard it in a supermarket)
* "pure pop for now people" - nick lowe (i love the sound of "i love the sound of breaking glass", over n over)
* "punk and disorderly" - v.a. (blitz - "someone's gonna die tonight oi oi oi")
* "electro" cd-r that my little brother made for me ("White Horse" by laid back, hell yeah)
* "hey frenchy" cd-r that Arthur made for me (if my kitchen was a movie, this would be its soundtrack album)
* "thoughts" - margo guryan (forgive the lame-o title)
* "an illustrated history" - puffy amiyumi (ditto)
* "Love Love No. 1" & "Love Love No. 2" GS mixed tapes - v.a.
* "Indian Giver/Pow Wow" 45" - 1910 Fruitgum Co.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 22 August 2002 13:42 (twenty-three years ago)

Actually I've been giving Playgroup lots of attention aswell, that Overflow song is the greatest thing ever, it feels like every type of music I love all mashed up together in one glorious song.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 22 August 2002 13:47 (twenty-three years ago)

julio, what do you think of the xenakis? i played for the first time in a long while the other night.

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 22 August 2002 13:48 (twenty-three years ago)

would I like playgroup?

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Thursday, 22 August 2002 13:58 (twenty-three years ago)

fritz: do you like ze/99/sleeping bag records type disco (not disco) (albeit filtered through 20 years of nu-production techniques and styles)? if so, then maybe. i do, but i'm only half/third sold on playgroup. there are some great songs ("number one", the k hanna colab, "50 ways to leave yr lover", "surface to air") and a lot of blah ones too.

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 22 August 2002 14:03 (twenty-three years ago)

clarke ask me about it on the 'the last 4 alb you bought' thread. he loves it. also when i met mark s Xenakis was one of the things we talked about.

Jess- I have heard three tracks from this particrlar compilation and I really enjoy it. I really love the incredible sounds he gets out of his machines. But I can't comment in detail as i only gave one listen. but I'm planning to listen to him lots when I'm on holiday from next friday.

I only have 'persepolis' and 'legend d'er'. Only his electronic stuff so far then but I'll get round to his orchestral stuff too. I think they have a sale on tower so I'll see what's on the xenakis section when i go rec shopping next week.

so to ans yr question: lots of listening to do...

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 22 August 2002 14:06 (twenty-three years ago)

what do you think of him jess?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 22 August 2002 14:07 (twenty-three years ago)

re: playgroup. jess, what is the disco (not disco) you refer to? like 80's NYC late disco/early house stuff or what? I'm not really that familiar with your label reference points.

Brock K. (Brock K.), Thursday, 22 August 2002 14:09 (twenty-three years ago)

fritz: yeah, basically. (cf. 2 compilations of same name, which you should def. pick up.) playgroup is fun if a bit too "clever" for me: paradise garage X late 70s rough tade + early electro/hiphop -/- triphop/downtempo, whatever. it is the sum of its parts, lets say. if you can find it used, pick it up. i'm sure others will dispute me.

julio: there are a few threads devoted to the big x, i think, but i can't remember if i actually posted to any of them. i think he's usually great, if a bit tiring in full. i have the three you do, as well as a vinyl lp i found in my local thrift store (!!) for a buck, which i've never been able to listen to as i don't have a working turntable. (that and the fact that it's now in parents attic.) "bohor" is probably my favorite piece on electronic music. runner up: "concrete ph" (is that on there?)

    Skullfucking Armageddon review

Siegbran Hetteson (eofor), Friday, 23 August 2002 14:57 (twenty-three years ago)

    how is this?
It's very...bad sound quality. Even for a boot, this is muddled, audience conversation focused stuff. That said, it's pretty easy to tell that they're still on the VCN tip. It's starts out with about 5 or 6 minutes of very soft (sounds improvisational) sounds -- similar to some of the noises from groups like ISO. Then, it explodes into primal drum frenzy territory, with Eye singing (somtimes in harmony with Yoshimi), yelling, messing with a synth and sampler. The track is about 50 minutes or so, and the end is similar to the beginning, long and quiet.
