Bands that enrage you

inspired mostly by the neverending Pomplamoose discussion on the Hyundai thread and the offhanded mention of The Dresden Dolls, a band that does a bazillion different things that, on paper, should be total catnip to me, but manage to do every single one in a manner that seems almost tailor-made to make me wish instead that I could shoot hammers out of the palms of my hands that would bludgeon them until they stopped.

Indolence Mission (DJP), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 17:09 (fifteen years ago)

I'm not necessarily talking about acts like Burzum who are repellent/repugnant on a basic social level; this is more about those bands who musically hit your aversion circuits through no particular fault of their own.

Indolence Mission (DJP), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 17:10 (fifteen years ago)

not a band but Joanna Newsom is this person for me, particularly re: should be total catnip but instead hammer-shooting-hands thing.

Mordy, Wednesday, 5 January 2011 17:11 (fifteen years ago)

Three Doors Down. Not just because they're horribly generic and had a career that was undeserved, but for their idiotic Citizen Soldier song/video

those balls look like a butt (San Te), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 17:30 (fifteen years ago)

every band Apple has used in their ads.

get off my lawn (rockapads), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 17:39 (fifteen years ago)

I should narrow that down: Every band who has done a song which Apple has used in their ads for iPhone, iPod, and iPad.

get off my lawn (rockapads), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 17:42 (fifteen years ago)

DJP: cosign on Dresden Dolls. Bands that get Brecht-rock right: Antifamily, Agent Ribbons.

bendy, Wednesday, 5 January 2011 17:46 (fifteen years ago)

andrew bird singlehandedly ruined pre-war american music for me

minecraft on a milk sea (diamonddave85), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 17:53 (fifteen years ago)

I love the Dresden Dolls/Amanda Palmer/Evelyn Evelyn stuff, now DJP and I can't be friends anymore ;_;

LCD Soundsystem obv

if anyone is lost to the tragic carnage of ILX, let it be (acoleuthic), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 18:18 (fifteen years ago)

Stuck Mojo because not only dp they sledgehammer you with "get off my lawn" paranoid neo-conservative politics in the liner notes and lyrics, all you get in return is a collection of half-assed songs and an occasionally cool riff.

Also band name is stupid

those balls look like a butt (San Te), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 18:23 (fifteen years ago)

the two that come to mind for me are Moldy Peaches and Rabbit Rabbit, but I always worry about bringing that up because somebody got all aggro at me in my early ilx days for one of them in a way that made me kinda think they might have been in the band or knew them or something so

O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 18:23 (fifteen years ago)

like that time i said i hated the Gay Dad album and DJP didnt talk to me for a month

O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 18:24 (fifteen years ago)

Oasis, just thinking of them makes me actually mad.

EDB, Wednesday, 5 January 2011 18:26 (fifteen years ago)

although I guess they are repellent/repugnant on a social level.

EDB, Wednesday, 5 January 2011 18:27 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, I'm the same with Oasis.

Eh, nothing too wrong with writing catchy throwback rock anthems. Many bands do it and piss me off less than Oasis.

steve miller band drives me ape shit

cocklamoose (chrisv2010), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 18:36 (fifteen years ago)

phish too

cocklamoose (chrisv2010), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 18:36 (fifteen years ago)

Fogging Molly, my complete history with them is having to sit through a live DVD in a restaurant, but that was enough for total and utter - probably lifelong in fact - hatred. And the main dude used to be in Fastway so they're only one step away from both Motorhead and UFO, which enrages me even more.

Satantango! (Matt #2), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 18:39 (fifteen years ago)

Flogging Molly, sorry

Satantango! (Matt #2), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 18:39 (fifteen years ago)

i was going to say the eagles but i like "one of these nights"

i was going to say steve miller but i like "abracadabra"

goole, Wednesday, 5 January 2011 18:40 (fifteen years ago)

As a huge follower of Phish in my late teens/early twenties, String Cheese Incident and Disco Biscuits would have me frothing at the mouth in anger. I don't think anyone I went to shows with felt the same.

It is actually worse than the Dresden Dolls stuff because at least there is a nugget of something I could conceivably enjoy and respect underneath the neverending layers of DD douchebaggery; EE is basically someone masturbating into a microphone and telling you it's the best symphony ever recorded.

Indolence Mission (DJP), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 18:55 (fifteen years ago)

O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 18:58 (fifteen years ago)

tbh I can get behind sending rape to Oasis

Indolence Mission (DJP), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 18:58 (fifteen years ago)

both black rebel motorcycle club and placebo drove me insane with how suck ass they were live but i've never bothered with an album of either of them. funny that i throw them together, but they seem like kind of the same bullshit to me.

Ghost of a Sabre Tooth Tiger.

i heard an interview & Sean Lennon going on about being inspired by 19th century science books and last night they were on Jimmy Fallon playing accordions and aaagggnnngh so much affected bullshit it's like white noise, like omg just fucking play and don't make it always be a "thing" that needs explaining. Gives me a damn migraine.

And I kinda like Sean Lennon so, fuck..whatever

VegemiteGrrrl, Saturday, 8 January 2011 08:04 (fifteen years ago)

Elvis Costello - uninteresting "articulate" lyrics, comes across as a stuck-up prick, boring pub rock, fuck the fuck off

Satantango! (Matt #2), Saturday, 8 January 2011 12:20 (fifteen years ago)

Nickelback doesn't infuriate me as much as it's fashionable it's led to believe most people are by it. I definitely don't like them and don't think I ever have, but their repertoire of hits is pretty impressive. It's like some weird reactionary thing online where as soon as one discovers "indie music" (at their current state, stuff like Vampire Weekend) they must cast off all their old influences to the most violent of degrees. The last.fm page, and all the comments, is boring and pathetic. Why waste time hating on this band?

heh (kelpolaris), Saturday, 8 January 2011 19:19 (fifteen years ago)

Oh man, I absolutely fucking hate Elvis Costello, thanks for reminding me.

Also, anyone that dared question Oasis' ability to will hammer-projectile arms, I direct you here: You think you're cool, but you're a dick - a picture thread

i'm starting to hate elvis costello too. though more because of his awful tv show than his albums, which i've never really felt the urge to listen to.

Bands that engage you:

The New York Dolls

Kevin John Bozelka, Sunday, 9 January 2011 05:19 (fifteen years ago)

R. Kelley but only for moral reasons. It's hard trying to keep a lifetime ban on him since he is talented.

Coldplay have cornered the market on music to play at your wedding and/or reception.

hahaha omg just got back from a wedding tonight! guess what was played

COLDPLAY ("Yellow")

also heard Michael Buble (first dance!), Dave Matthews, and that annoying "I'm Youuuurrrs" song by Jason Mraz

the 30 min. dedicated to "dancing" where all the old ppl came out to shake their hip replacements included Stevie Wonder "Superstitious", James Brown "Sex Machine", Michael Jackson "Billie Jean", Jackson 5 "I Want You Back"

final dance floor song? Black Eyed Peas "I Gotta Feeling"

Creed would have been on this list like five or more years ago when they still mattered, but really more or less just Scott Stapp.

back when Yahoo did those Yahoo Chats with celebrities, and this one was a radio broadcast, and I asked Scott what he thought of his comparisons to Eddie Vedder, and he replied "I kick his ass completely".

Wow lotsa awesome bands getting hated on ITT... but, I guess there's no accounting for taste.

I'm not particularly enraged by many bands... but basically pop-punk sends me overboard, such as:

Rancid
NOFX
Lagwagon
Blink-182
Anti-Flag
AFI
Bad Religion
Good Charlotte
SUM 41
etc...

no pop, no style -- all simply (Viceroy), Monday, 10 January 2011 08:00 (fifteen years ago)

I generally think Marilyn Manson is a douche and in conversation comes across as nothing more than a pseudo-intellectual obsessed with promoting his own image he insists defies all generalizations one would get from just looking at him. The actual things he has to say about issues he finds relevant to himself are cliche and almost juvenile. I really first started hating him in Bowling for Columbine, fyi.

heh (kelpolaris), Monday, 10 January 2011 08:46 (fifteen years ago)
