In Praise Of...Puff Daddy and the Family - No Way Out

No shock that this album is unfairly hated on both by casual and devoted rap fiends, even some here on ILX. And I aint here to tell nobody what to think and invite debate.

Diddy got unfairly labeled a lazy interpolationist, but the production is fantastic, and only really hits the obvious samples on the singles (which are good too).

Massive Notorious B.I.G. verses, especially on "Victory" and "Young G's"...even Puffy sounds inspired. And "Pain" is a moving track which really made the lame "I'll Be Missing You" unnecessary.

"What You Gonna Do" is a fun track with nice storytelling too. So...speak out in praise, or against!

You heard of us, the murderous, most shady
Been on the low lately, the feds hate me
The son of satan
They say my killin's too blatant
You hesitatin, I'm in yo mama crib waitin
Duct tapin, your fam destiny
Lays in my hands, gat lays in my waist
Francis, M to the IZ-H phenominal

Couldn't get away from NWO or Ma$e's Harlem World back in 97. Puffy was everywhere in those days!

My most vivid memory during this era, was my father walked by the den and saw me watching Puff Daddy perform on MTV. He stared, laughed and said, "He's trying to be Hammer."

I looked closely at the shiny suit and started to cringe at the thought of listening to the next Hammer. I never could listen to the singles from the album again.

I probably should give this album a fair listen.

I hated Puffy when he came out but then again I didn't listen to rap then. wasn't until like I turned 18 that I bought my first non-Hammer non-Kriss Kross non-Shaquille O'Neal rap album (Snoop's Doggystyle).
