Check out this video of my dad singing with The Spencer Davis Group in 75. That's Lee from Captain Beyond and Iron Butterfly on bass!

There used to be a compi called 8 Gigs a Week that had all the Stevie Winwood era studio material across 2cds. Got some great stuff.Just saw there's a 3cd set advertised in Record collector of their 67-69 stuff. I assume that's all post Stevie. Hadn't realised there was that much recorded.
I got surprised by the lead guitar on some of the 66 stuff sounding far more like it fit in with the end of the decade. I think it was hearing Neighbour Neighbour through walkman headphones had me first notice.

I had no idea there were two different single mixes for "Gimme Some Lovin'," a rare instance where I prefer the U.S. release of a British recording. (I can think of only one other example, the Animals' "We Gotta Get Out of This Place.")
The UK version has a different lead vocal, is a touch slower, loses the "call-and-response" in the chorus by dropped the backing vocals, is missing percussion overdubs and the "live-sounding" ambience of the US single. The additional overdubs (which were actually performed by some of the future members of Traffic) and other tweaks to the mix were done by future Traffic and Rolling Stones producer Jimmy Miller.
So here's the UK version:

And here's the US version that's far more common:

That's really interesting. The US mix feels "correct" to me since that's the one I've heard the most by far. "I'm a Man" sounds like it had the same mix in both countries. What are other examples of beat group era singles that are that different in their UK and US versions?
