I've been trying to sort this one in my head for a couple of days. I quit.

I...have to vote Thin Lizzy.

kind of chill and very rapegaze (rip van wanko), Friday, 7 January 2011 20:26 (fourteen years ago)

impossible. they serve different needs, but i'd be incomplete without either. voted thin lizzy, though i've spent more of my life listening to motorhead. not sure why (either part of that sentence, really).

Voted Motorhead (even Thin Lizzy themselves wanted to be Motorhead, at least for a spell):

Sanford, Friday, 7 January 2011 20:49 (fourteen years ago)

Motörhead, obviously. Thin Lizzy had a few moments of glory, but Motörhead have never flagged (not even when they had an ex-TL'er in the band, ha ha) and are better now than they've ever been.

that's not funny. (unperson), Friday, 7 January 2011 20:58 (fourteen years ago)

I'm voting suicide

i would just like to point out that i have been orange & teal itt (Edward III), Friday, 7 January 2011 20:59 (fourteen years ago)

me too! voted for TL in part because i thought they might not get enough respect (in retrospect: duh).

carles marx (contenderizer), Friday, 7 January 2011 22:13 (fourteen years ago)

I love Motorhead but love, love, love Thin Lizzy. I'd be slightly surprised to find that anyone likes one of these bands but dislikes the other.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 7 January 2011 23:11 (fourteen years ago)

I guess that'd be me, although I don't exactly dislike Thin Lizzy I'm not crazy about them either.

a fucking stove just fell on my foot. (Colonel Poo), Friday, 7 January 2011 23:13 (fourteen years ago)

I'm slightly surprised.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 7 January 2011 23:15 (fourteen years ago)

both are the kind of band nobody really wants to knock but i think Lizzy has a much broader appeal

Johnny Cheever (some dude), Friday, 7 January 2011 23:17 (fourteen years ago)

I don't think its much of a surprise that I voted for Thin Lizzy...

no pop, no style -- all simply (Viceroy), Saturday, 8 January 2011 04:51 (fourteen years ago)

Funny thing is even still for as much great music both bands made, they are both still really under-rated in the whole scheme of things.

earlnash, Saturday, 8 January 2011 05:08 (fourteen years ago)

Motorhead.

Let's do it scientifically :

Best drummer - Lizzy
Best guitarist(s) - Lizzy
Best bassist - Motorhead
Best singer - uuunggghhhhhhh can't decide
Best lyrics - can't decide that either
Largest number of good songs - Lizzy

TL get my vote!

there is no wrong answer probably

i dunno, weird poll, single-minded mania vs. the band that in some odd way managed to synthesize nearly every form of rock music that existed in the 70s

dj plain ole m@tt (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 21 January 2011 01:28 (fourteen years ago)

like thin lizzy can remind me of iron maiden sometimes and bruce springsteen at times, that's crazy

it is kind of a weird compare

two "metal" bands with great crossover appeal maybe? Blue Oyster Cult also come to mind. as do Aerosmith, Van Halen and Led Zeppelin of course.

This poll makes sense as the battle of the bass-playing front men, I suppose.
I thought that the photo at the top was maybe a couple of dudes dressed up for Halloween and that the Lemmy was a lot more convincing than the Phil :-/

Trip Maker, Friday, 21 January 2011 17:18 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, apparently vega was evasive or deceptive about his age for years, it wasn't until recently that his true age came out

yeah, we talked about the effect of transitional robbo elements on motorheadlike lizzy and/or lizzyesque motorhead upthread. secret heresy: another perfect day might be my favorite motorhead album (of the classic stuff i know well, anyway). but it's not like they've got a bunch of other curves in their catalog.

normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Friday, 21 January 2011 17:44 (fourteen years ago)

love how lemmy is reaching out, through the haze, to you, dear viewer. like he's inviting you to put another foot up and get onboard. drug train leaves with or without you.

this lizzy could rock plenty hard when they needed to.

dj plain ole m@tt (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Sunday, 23 January 2011 18:13 (fourteen years ago)

Which Lizzy are you talking about? ;)

Look, "when they needed to" does not instill any hard rock confidence in me. Cuz Motorhead is ALWAYS hard rockin' even when they have to tie their shoes. In fact, Lemmy probably doesn't even fuck with shoelaces.

And Mark G, the only thing in life that I'd like to hear is "Snaggletooth" so steamroll away!

Saw Lizzy on Sat night. Really, and surprisingly, good. Great songs treated with enough respect. Gorham's an old man now but looks like he's having the time of his life. And the fella from The Almighty who does the singing has just the right voice ... Thoroughly enjoyable show.

Lynnot's delivery also has some of that cool easiness that Hendrix had.

What lead me to search for this was listening to Johnny the Fox and thinking about how hard Thin Lizzy v. BOC would be (discussed upthread but never actually polled).
