Tinie, Plan B and the xx - that's three chances not to award Mumford & Sons. Not a bad line-up by Brits standards.

It didn't start selling well till 2010 though which means to the judges it didn't exist until this year.
Interesting to see Matt Cardle nominated for best single, wonder why his version was picked over the Biffy Clyro's which came out earlier in the year. He must have done something really special to the song to make the judges take notice.

― Mark G, Friday, 14 January 2011 09:48 (fourteen years ago)
I agree. I think Tinie has too much goodwill behind him - he hasn't put a step wrong all year. The Brits are calculated enough to recognise that he's just a more charming and exciting poster boy for British music than the Mumfords. It would be nice to see Plan B do well but I'm not sure.

And I'm not a massive fan of the Coral, just...
Never put those three bands together in my mind, but yeah I think they just came out at a time when the UK was more interested in retro rock, not baggy-style psychedelia.
The Coral were pretty popular though. More so than the Vines or the Datsuns or whoever was being hyped around then. Probably more popular than the Libertines the first time round as well.
Also, they WERE retro rock. Through and through.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 11:07 (fourteen years ago)
Bigger than the Libertines and the Vines? Not round my way. They had a retro feel, but they had a more ambitious, Merseystyle sound than any of those reductivist four-chord bands.
― dentarthurdent (dog latin), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 11:11 (fourteen years ago)
The Coral seemed to actually have fans, as opposed to people hired in to look keen.
― Mark G, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 11:11 (fourteen years ago)

CAn't see the Coral connection. Mumford are more like Athlete starring in an Innocent Smoothies ad.

"Shadows Fall" is probably as close as it gets.
― Mark G, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 11:13 (fourteen years ago)
Yeah but Doglatin "round your way" is not really a particularly representative sample. The first Coral album went platinum and was top five in the charts. The first Libertines album peaked at #35 and has still only gone gold. The Vines only went gold as well and every album after their debut performed underwhelmingly. Around 2002-2004 The Coral were bigger than all of them.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 11:14 (fourteen years ago)
Anyway Mumford & Cunts are Britain's Kings of Leon really. Arena rock with folksy touches and a ridiculous fake homespun aesthetic.

Yeah, they've both got that beardy inbred look going on too.
― seminal fuiud (NickB), Wednesday, 16 February 2011 11:21 (fourteen years ago)
Don't see the Coral connection either - they were Wirral stoners into Beefheart and psychedelia. I can't imagine Geoff Barrow ever producing a Mumford & Sons album. I think looking back at 00s indie, the Coral's stuff will age better than most.
― DL, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 11:25 (fourteen years ago)
The first Libertines album peaked at #35 and has still only gone gold
