thought about doing a poll of all major label mall emo bands, but i think it'll be more fun to just compare and contrast the big three, who imo are each really good for totally different reasons

Poll Results

OptionVotes
Paramore 15
My Chemical Romance 10
Fall Out Boy 10

don't know paramore at all but it's a really tough choice between MCR and FOB. think I will go with MCR because they seem more sincere in their shtick but I'll have to meditate on it.

dayo, Monday, 10 January 2011 15:56 (fourteen years ago)

here's how I would rank their major label albums:

FOB - Folie a Deux
MCR - Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge
Paramore - Riot!
MCR - Danger Days: The True Lives Of The Fabulous Killjoys
FOB - Infinity On High
Paramore - brand new eyes
FOB - From Under The Cork Tree
MCR - The Black Parade

some dude, Monday, 10 January 2011 16:00 (fourteen years ago)

fob made two perfect records and suger were going down so them. but mcr will have the best greatest hits one day. and paramore need a couple more years in the game before i can really compare them to fob and mcr. also a 3 letter abbrev.

some dude, Monday, 10 January 2011 16:50 (fourteen years ago)

folie a duex your fav record but no singles off it?

"jobs" (a hoy hoy), Monday, 10 January 2011 17:07 (fourteen years ago)

yeah -- they totally picked the wrong songs and shit the bed on promoting that record

some dude, Monday, 10 January 2011 17:18 (fourteen years ago)

paramore..brand new eyes is a solid album. killer singles before that. lyrics sometimes pretty lame, but not lamer than the two others. actually not that lame at all, they're too clever and thought-through, but in a sympathetic, youthful, self-righteous aggressive way. powerful, compact little songs. suspect they will go on to even greater things UNLESS they start doing the acoustic 'only exception' schtick as their main thing. overrated song is overrated. i like fob alright and suspect they are better than I appreciate if I just take a listen to their albums. mcr is not my bag.

abcfsk, Monday, 10 January 2011 17:53 (fourteen years ago)

MCR, who've now released three straight fantastic albums (too many of you guys are underrating Black Parade). FOB's albums weren't quite as consistent for me.

one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 10 January 2011 17:55 (fourteen years ago)

every time my chemical romance release an album i think "i love my chemical romance! i will listen to this album" and then i listen to it and no apparently i don't love my chemical romance. i don't know what it is i love but it's something unnamable and peripheral to my chemical romance. there's a song called "planetary (GO!)" on the new album though that is pretty hilarious.

anyway the answer is paramore for two reasons: 1) despite all her obvious limitations as a lyricist hayley williams writes more cleverly and more compactly than either of the other two drippy assholes, and wrote the line "god knows the world doesn't need another band / but what a waste it would have been"; and 2) girls singing > guys singing.

of course paramore is presently IN TURMOIL!, dunno if anyone's following that.

difficult listening hour, Monday, 10 January 2011 19:32 (fourteen years ago)

there were a few posts about that on the Paramore thread. it's pretty weird, i dunno, hopefully they won't miss a beat but they did lose a great drummer and the guy who wrote most of their riffs. i don't think they'll start going acoustic all the time after "The Only Exception" or anything though.

some dude, Tuesday, 11 January 2011 01:19 (fourteen years ago)

Fall Out Boy's singles are better than MCR's . I don't know who Paramore are.

I like My Chemical Romance's sorta fancy little uniforms – it's like Adam Ant by way of Deadsy. The question is: is that what they sound like?

Stop Non-Erotic Cabaret (Abbbottt), Tuesday, 11 January 2011 01:36 (fourteen years ago)

Everyone once in a while I try to give each of these bands a fair shake. Paramore is the only one that I get through.

not really. and they only wore those outfits for The Black Parade, their worst album.

some dude, Tuesday, 11 January 2011 01:54 (fourteen years ago)

That's a shame...I thought of them as a fancy-dressing band and they had that as a √ in my mind.

Stop Non-Erotic Cabaret (Abbbottt), Tuesday, 11 January 2011 01:58 (fourteen years ago)

they have some good fancy-dressing outfits for their new album too

i don't really listen to fall out boy or my chemical romance, but i like paramore a lot, so paramore

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 18 January 2011 02:08 (fourteen years ago)

these bands fall into three distinct levels for me

1. FOB -- absolutely love these guys, obviously. 'folie a deux' is top 10 or 15 of the whole decade for me & 'infinity on high' isn't far behind. as far as singles go, they probably aren't on my chem's level of highs but they prob have more great singles. also the fact that FOB are such pariahs to almost everyone (like, even including irl people, the only ppl i know that really like them are... me, ship, dom, johnny c, mordy?) make me love them more.

2. my chem -- i love 'black parade' about as much as those FOB albums, and of course their singles from 'three cheers' are just straight titanic, but i never really got into that album, and i was really anticipating 'danger days' but idk i just couldn't really get into that album either. i need to give it another shot in a few weeks cuz i was really cramming at the end of last year & diddy-dirty money was kinda taking my life over as well.

3. paramore -- "misery business" is a stunner but aside from that paramore don't really have my heart. 'riot!' is good & all but i think the single stands above it. never really cared much about them after that tbh :-/

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 18 January 2011 02:13 (fourteen years ago)

I kinda unashamedly used 2000s emo music to soundtrack various embarrassing parts of my early-mid 20s, so this is a difficult choice.

My first instinct is to go with Paramore, because I feel like I like them most, but really that all kinda turns on "Pressure" (which I really really love) and then like seven or eight songs I am pretty cool with. There's not an album of theirs I like as much as Black Parade, and I like "Helena" more than anything on Black Parade on top of that. Also I kinda like that before Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge came out I had randomly been stumbled across the completely ridiculous single from their previous album called "Vampires Will Never Hurt You".

Fall Out Boy was never like, MY band. They've done a bunch of songs I like, but there's not really a Fall Out Boy song that I can put with a particular time or place the way I can with various Paramore or MCR songs, and so inevitably I think of them less fondly. It's not so much a logical issue as a decision to be made *right here*

C-L, Tuesday, 18 January 2011 02:32 (fourteen years ago)

Surprised no one has mentioned how epic "Teenagers" is. Still voted for FOB for mostly the reasons J0rdan named (last two albums overall more consistent than MCR output). Particularly because of Infinity on High more than Folie. IOH seemed totally matched to the moment it came out. Folie is also great but not a totally shocking follow-up to IOH like IOH was to Cork Tree nonsense. I love that Paramore song "That's What You Get" bc it rocks on Rock Band, but most of their stuff is really boring. I kinda want to like them the most (Hayley Williams is like a one woman Jessica Hopper wrecking crew) but not as consistent as FOB or as epic as MCR.

Mordy, Tuesday, 18 January 2011 04:40 (fourteen years ago)

the drum and vocal break in misery business is super awesome. but yeah all three bands are awful.

jumpskins, Tuesday, 18 January 2011 05:03 (fourteen years ago)

j0rdan! you forgot to add me to the list of FOB acolytes. think I got into them on yr insistence that they were actually sort of amazing.

have not spent enough time with MCR - remember liking Black Parade but not loving it, and haven't heard the new album yet.

given my affinity for chick-rock + early ashlee simpson, I should really give paramore a spin or three.

and then spent the next year telling you to listen to From Under the Cork Tree, which last time we had this conversation you still hadn't (outside the singles) :/

Alex in Montreal, Tuesday, 18 January 2011 05:43 (fourteen years ago)

(but you have by now because it's amazing, right?)

Alex in Montreal, Tuesday, 18 January 2011 05:43 (fourteen years ago)

should also be said that take this to your grave is kind of a perfect pop-punk record.

Brad Nelson (BradNelson), Tuesday, 18 January 2011 06:21 (fourteen years ago)

if you're into that sort of thing

Brad Nelson (BradNelson), Tuesday, 18 January 2011 06:21 (fourteen years ago)

I always get confused by 'take this to your grave' as a title bcz it's a fall out boy record but a my chemical romance lyric (ok 'take this to my grave', w/e). My brain cannot encompass the two.

Between MCR and FOB it's pretty much a matter of closing my eyes and picking at random: I love them both very fiercely and very fondly. Are MCR objectively better and FOB more likeable? Are FOB more close-to-the-bone-through-ridiculousness? Do MCR have bigger choruses? Is the comic-con cosplay of 'Danger Days' more delightful than the lyric "if home is where the heart is then we're all just fucked"? These are impossible questions!

Paramore, I really don't know much about. I've always wanted to like them, because girl-fronted pop emo how could I not be into that, but they've never stuck.

mcr / fob fans were indecisive, went back and forth, and got the split vote result they deserved. meanwhile the paramore fans were loyal to the end

one year passes...

After falling for MCR a while back, I figured I should give FOB a crack. I like a few tracks per album, but they don't work for me on the same level, and I'm having trouble figuring out why. MCR's attempts at straight-up mallpunk/emo, arena rock and slick pop music are all more compelling to me. About the only FOB equivalent I prefer is their 2.5 minute piano ballad.

Maybe it's the approach to stardom? FOB obviously care a lot about being famous and loved - which is cool! - but MCR always just seemed to do whatever suited them without worrying if it was going to come off or not.

I will allow that FOB's handlers were/are way better at selecting singles, for the most part.
