partially through a brief period of blanket contempt for punk, but mostly through hearing bits of it and not particularly wanting to hear more. which important records has anyone else managed to avoid?

matthew james, Thursday, 22 August 2002 20:29 (twenty-three years ago)

You lucky, lucky man.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 22 August 2002 20:32 (twenty-three years ago)

I have never got round to hearing Beatles recs apart from the white album (which i like). Never heard the Who, Exile on main street, any led zep, black sabbath, the ramones. I'm sure there are many others. a lot of gaps...

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 22 August 2002 20:38 (twenty-three years ago)

i too have avoided hearing 'never mind the bollocks' in its entirety. we should start a club called 'the sex pistols disbelievers'.

fields of salmon (fieldsofsalmon), Thursday, 22 August 2002 21:03 (twenty-three years ago)

You're not missing much. Haven't heard countless "essential" albums. I haven't heard ANYTHING by Can, for one thing. I may return when I think of more...

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Thursday, 22 August 2002 21:18 (twenty-three years ago)

I have never heard Sleater-Kinney. But I have heard Portland's indie shits go on and on and on. Dance, you indie shits!

peeb, Thursday, 22 August 2002 21:22 (twenty-three years ago)

This is the most pretentious thread ever.

j0hn darn1elle, Thursday, 22 August 2002 21:28 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah. can. people are always on about can and
stuff and i feel left out.

on that ILM Top 100 Records list- i only owned
14 of them.

ethan was bragging about only owning 16.

i'll find the list.

okay.

i've never heard my bloody valentine. i've
never really heard massive attack. primal
scream. dinosaur jr. kraftwerk. manic street
preachers.

DK, Thursday, 22 August 2002 21:32 (twenty-three years ago)

I have only ever heard three records in my life and one of them was a double-LP bootleg of Stockhausen ordering lunch at a falafel joint near his house during a period beginning 1/5/64 and ending 9/17/68. Evidently the fellow behind the counter had a tape deck next to the mayonnaise jar and pressed "record" every time he saw K.S. coming up the road. The other two records have no identifying information on them and consist largely of bells being rung underwater. Prior to this thread I had never even heard of the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, or My Bloody Valentine, and I am planning to unhear-of Elvis and the Beach Boys as soon as I can.

j0hn Darn1elle, Thursday, 22 August 2002 21:43 (twenty-three years ago)

I haven't heard an entire album by either Jay-Z or the Fall. Scattered songs, maybe, but not albums.

Nate Patrin, Thursday, 22 August 2002 21:45 (twenty-three years ago)

john, i can send you those submerged bell remixes

boxcubed (boxcubed), Thursday, 22 August 2002 21:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Congratulations, all, on being so blatantly "uncool."

Jody Beth Rosen, Thursday, 22 August 2002 21:49 (twenty-three years ago)

I have never heard anything by Van Morrison unless accidentally caught unawares. This makes me very happy as the few tracks which I have been *tricked* into listening to have been very bad indeed.

Nate. You are a man of wit and perception. If you want I will willingly send you acouple of Fall albums (they are a bit scratched but still listenable) as long as you listen to them in their entirity. This offer is genuine so just mail me with your address.

Kris England, Thursday, 22 August 2002 22:01 (twenty-three years ago)

John D is my new hero!

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 22 August 2002 22:12 (twenty-three years ago)

Erm, so? That question to all.

Graham (graham), Thursday, 22 August 2002 22:42 (twenty-three years ago)

so we're cooler. i thought that was
obvious.

go listen to can.

DK, Friday, 23 August 2002 00:24 (twenty-three years ago)

I've never heard "Nevermind the Bollocks" in its entirety either, come to think of it, though I think I still like some of the songs. (And every time I consider buying it, like for instance if it's on sale, I feel silly doing it at such a late date.) I've never heard any Van Morrison albums either, though I just borrowed one from the library.

Let's see. There are so many major albums from the last ten years that I haven't heard that it hardly makes sense to mention them.

To move closer to my current interests, I have never heard a Tipica 73 album.

DeRayMi, Friday, 23 August 2002 00:48 (twenty-three years ago)

Kris: if they're LPs I'm afraid that's a no go, seeing as how my turntable is broken. My tape deck is pretty screwy, too, come to think of it. Got a burner? All the hip kids have them. I do too.

Nate Patrin, Friday, 23 August 2002 01:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I *have* heard the acknowledged best albums by the Beatles, Dylan, Marvin Gaye, the Sex Pistols, Public Enemy and Nirvana. I have never heard Can and don't plan to anytime soon, because despite several impressive efforts to convince me otherwise, they still sound about as interesting as watching Autechre watch paint dry.

B:Rad, Friday, 23 August 2002 02:58 (twenty-three years ago)

I have never heard any music. I am here as a social experiment

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Friday, 23 August 2002 03:04 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe I've heard music but you wouldn't know because I don't articulate or think about it at all -- I just feel it.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 23 August 2002 03:19 (twenty-three years ago)

The other day I heard a snippet of The Grateful Dead for (I think) the first time. It was a lot more 'normal' than I expected.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Friday, 23 August 2002 07:26 (twenty-three years ago)

i haven't heard nevermindthebollocks either, but then most people haven't, have they, i mean really. i mean, go ask the next 10 people you bump into if they've heard it. i bet you get, like, maybe 1

i still haven't heard roxy music. i mean, like, even one song. i admitted this on some other thread and everyone told me i must, immediately. so i bought the first 2 albums, but i haven't had chance to play them yet

i haven't really hear Tito Puente, not properly, only one Eddie Palmieri track, mt going to kill me but not really Juan Atkins (although i think i'm going to see him djing on sunday with Farben), stalwarts like Roy Davis Jr, like, only one track. The Clash, The White Stripes i haven't heard, but i don't care. Penderecki i haven't heard but would like to, ditto Offenbach, Charlemagne Palestine, Sugababes

gareth (gareth), Friday, 23 August 2002 07:36 (twenty-three years ago)

I've never heard "Unit Structures." Actually, I don't think I've heard any Cecil Taylor albums, though he's on my list of CDs to buy in the next year or so. (I have to admit that seeing him live once did not inspire me to want to own any of his recordings.)

DeRayMi, Friday, 23 August 2002 11:41 (twenty-three years ago)

now I know what to put in a cassette for deraymi?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 23 August 2002 11:47 (twenty-three years ago)

Julio, that would be fine, or any CT you'd like me to hear. (You popped up rather quickly at the mention of Cecil Taylor.)

DeRayMi, Friday, 23 August 2002 11:52 (twenty-three years ago)

''(You popped up rather quickly at the mention of Cecil Taylor.)''

I'm pretty quick w/ such things.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 23 August 2002 12:06 (twenty-three years ago)

This IS a most pretentious thread. I can't imagine being proud of never having heard something, even something much-vaunted that you think you wouldn't like. But check this out: my brother had, as of last night, never heard of Eminem. Didn't even know who he was, had never heard the name. Not to avoid the hype or anything, just completely clueless.

I played the new one for him: he was in hysterics and was gonna go BUY it (he never buys music) today. Chalk up another one for Slim.

matt riedl (veal), Friday, 23 August 2002 14:11 (twenty-three years ago)

its not pride though, most people haven't heard really obvious things, its just bemusement on my part, and, like, to hear even quite obvious things you have to actually go out of your way, and with the sheer volume of stuff out there, really big things just kind of slip through the cracks

gareth (gareth), Friday, 23 August 2002 14:28 (twenty-three years ago)

''This IS a most pretentious thread. I can't imagine being proud of never having heard something''

Its not the case that I'm not proud of it. just that I never got round to it becuz its not at the top of my list of priorities.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 23 August 2002 14:29 (twenty-three years ago)

the above should read 'not abt pride' (you know what i mean)...

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Friday, 23 August 2002 14:30 (twenty-three years ago)

Chalk up another one for Slim.

Hooboy. Well, better that album than the others.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 23 August 2002 14:38 (twenty-three years ago)

No, THIS is the most pretentious thread:
BEST JAZZ ALBUMS EVER
Or perhaps:
Why are music critics afraid to write about love?
Or... wait a second!
THEY ARE ALL RIDICULOUSLY PRETENTIOUS

peeb!, Friday, 23 August 2002 16:20 (twenty-three years ago)

the terrorists have alr-oh what's the fucking point...

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 23 August 2002 16:55 (twenty-three years ago)

I've never heard an album by Love. In fact, until today Arthur Lee and Love were both vaguely familiar names, without any particular associations. So there. Love is apparently quite famous?
