Best White Stripes single (off of an album)

As much as I love many of their full-lengths, I regret these guys won't get a badass catalog sales chart burning best-of like bands of yore. Not counting "non-album singles" from wikipedia, I'm talking potential hits-comp stuff.

Every time I used to hear "Conquest," I imagined Leslie Nielsen singing "Besame Mucho" in The Naked Gun 2 1/2. This is a compliment.

Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 13 January 2011 14:12 (fourteen years ago)

For me it's "Dead Leaves"

I don't care too much about the later singles

van smack, Thursday, 13 January 2011 14:17 (fourteen years ago)

I said on the other thread, but Fell in Love with a Girl changed me when I first heard it.

전승 Complete Victory (in Battle) (NotEnough), Thursday, 13 January 2011 14:19 (fourteen years ago)

In a good way, I mean.

전승 Complete Victory (in Battle) (NotEnough), Thursday, 13 January 2011 14:19 (fourteen years ago)

"We're going to be friends" was never a single.

Mark G, Thursday, 13 January 2011 16:03 (fourteen years ago)

i took shit for "Icky Thump" being the only Stripes on my list of best rock singles of the decade, but i heard it on the radio the other day and that shit just hits me so much harder than anything else they've done.

Magill: a gorilla (some dude), Thursday, 13 January 2011 16:15 (fourteen years ago)

Doorbell

assorted curses (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 13 January 2011 16:36 (fourteen years ago)

"Seven Nation Army" is my favorite WS single, from my least favorite album.

Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 13 January 2011 16:38 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, "Doorbell" is the only one of these that still inspires relentless spinning for an hour fervour in me.

Tinker Tailor Soulja Boy Tell 'Em (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 13 January 2011 16:41 (fourteen years ago)

hotel yorba.

piscesx, Thursday, 13 January 2011 17:01 (fourteen years ago)

Jesus I hate that song

Tinker Tailor Soulja Boy Tell 'Em (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 13 January 2011 17:05 (fourteen years ago)

It's either Dead Leaves or Doorbell for me.

Matt DC, Thursday, 13 January 2011 17:06 (fourteen years ago)

dead leaves is great, too

don't hate hotel yorba, but ain't no way it's their best single

normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Thursday, 13 January 2011 17:09 (fourteen years ago)

video is goofy as fuck but I love it. song is so lean, just perfectly constructed

flutes & fucking mexican death horns (The Reverend), Thursday, 13 January 2011 20:20 (fourteen years ago)

Wow, none of my favourites were singles. And it took me 10 years to notice.

B-Boy Bualadh Bos (ecuador_with_a_c), Thursday, 13 January 2011 22:10 (fourteen years ago)

"Seven Nation Army" but it's kinda like "Immigrant Song" in that I know it's a juggernaut & yet I never want to put it---would love to hear it at a sporting event though & that's the criterion of "best" I'm gonna use here (since I love e.g. "Hotel Yorba" & "My Doorbell" but they seem like album tracks rather than massive rock singles) (also haven't put on a record or song by this band since 2007 & am thinking maybe I ought to again!)

Euler, Thursday, 13 January 2011 22:22 (fourteen years ago)

almost all their albums hold up really well imho (Icky Thump being the exception)

assorted curses (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 13 January 2011 22:34 (fourteen years ago)

Hardest Button in a walk imo.

Dr. (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 13 January 2011 22:45 (fourteen years ago)

not a walk, but yeah...

wasn't You're Pretty Good Looking (For a Girl) a single?

Are you anticipating an end to the Age of Stupid? (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 14 January 2011 01:02 (fourteen years ago)

we're going to be friends would be the easy choice were it actually a single. going for fell in love with a girl

karajan camping (electricsound), Friday, 14 January 2011 01:05 (fourteen years ago)

Also, Jolene's not on an album...

Wouldve voted for Party of Special Things if you had included it [/sulk]

Are you anticipating an end to the Age of Stupid? (Drugs A. Money), Friday, 14 January 2011 01:05 (fourteen years ago)

Jolene was released as a single from their live album.

da croupier, Friday, 14 January 2011 03:32 (fourteen years ago)

nevermind, turns out it was a live single from a DVD that has an almost identical name as their live album. thankfully it's not a big deal.

da croupier, Friday, 14 January 2011 03:35 (fourteen years ago)

no, it's a deal. LOCK THREAD.

some dude, Friday, 14 January 2011 03:39 (fourteen years ago)

"Jolene" and "I Just Don't Know What To Do Myself" are both good covers but aren't even the best covers of those songs

some dude, Friday, 14 January 2011 03:40 (fourteen years ago)

As long as I don't have to hear Meg sing, I can stand these guys. I never understood how good Moe Tucker can be at the mic until I heard Meg's solo turn on Elephant.

Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 14 January 2011 03:46 (fourteen years ago)

I love "Cold, Cold Night," it's probably my favorite song off Elephant.

Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 14 January 2011 03:55 (fourteen years ago)

all strong contenders through "There's No Home For You Here"

voting "Dead Leaves" for the beastly guitar sound

boots get knocked from here to czechoslovakier (milo z), Friday, 14 January 2011 03:56 (fourteen years ago)

"Jolene" and "I Just Don't Know What To Do Myself" are both good covers but aren't even the best covers of those songs

man, if there's a better "jolene" out there, i need to hear it. the live version is one of my favorite cover versions of anything, ever.

normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Friday, 14 January 2011 04:22 (fourteen years ago)

what is this live album you speak of?

beer, beer, beer (Pillbox), Sunday, 23 January 2011 03:05 (fourteen years ago)

I honestly thought doorbell would win this. three votes??

beer, beer, beer (Pillbox), Sunday, 23 January 2011 03:06 (fourteen years ago)

i never got with "big three", or not 100% anyway. don't know why, but i remember being bummed by it, cuz i'd liked the prior singles so much more. would take "let's shake hands", "lafeyette blues", "hand springs" or "candy cane children" over it anyday (still don't know why these were left off the poll). did sound great live though.

normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Sunday, 23 January 2011 03:11 (fourteen years ago)

lafayette blues is so awesome! the only one i rank with big 3.

amphetamine enhanced scholar (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 23 January 2011 03:22 (fourteen years ago)

*the only one you listed

amphetamine enhanced scholar (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 23 January 2011 03:23 (fourteen years ago)

Hearing Hotel Yorba before anything else delayed my getting into the White Stripes by several months.

The baby boomers have defined everything once and for all (Dorianlynskey), Sunday, 23 January 2011 10:07 (fourteen years ago)

Why no Hand Springs? Was it kept off deliberately?

Dr X O'Skeleton, Sunday, 23 January 2011 20:28 (fourteen years ago)

It's not on an album

Mark G, Sunday, 23 January 2011 22:42 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, i get that, but why poll only album singles? seems odd to limit things when the band hasn't put out a ton of singles. not that it really matters, just curious...

normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Sunday, 23 January 2011 22:53 (fourteen years ago)

well, rereading the OP, i guess da croup was interested in the songs that might someday make it onto a greatest hits comp. so the exclusion of early indie singles that few have heard does make sense.

carry on

normal_fantasy-unicorns (contenderizer), Sunday, 23 January 2011 22:57 (fourteen years ago)

It's an odd one, the usual thing would be to poll *non album* singles I guess...

Mark G, Sunday, 23 January 2011 22:58 (fourteen years ago)

using wikipedia, blowing minds, it's what i do
