Listening Room is a website for listening to music with your friends. Anyone in a room can play mp3s from their computer, and everyone hears the same thing at the same time.

Listening Room is also a work in progress. For best results, use a recent version of Chrome, Safari, or Firefox. If it stops working, try hitting the refresh button.

neat!

EZ Snappin, Friday, 14 January 2011 14:44 (fourteen years ago)

That looks great. I tried to add something but don't think it took. Already running late this morning though so know time to fool with it.

Slightly Confused is now seandalai

Dans la Bot (seandalai), Friday, 14 January 2011 15:05 (fourteen years ago)

it's really glitchy but once they get this worked out it could be ilx with music.

From the novel "Spinster Dinner" (forksclovetofu), Friday, 14 January 2011 15:06 (fourteen years ago)

Oh, you can change your name. Was this thing designed by an ILXor?

Dans la Bot (seandalai), Friday, 14 January 2011 15:06 (fourteen years ago)

how kind of you to allow ilxor to dj your day

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 14 January 2011 15:09 (fourteen years ago)

maybe it's about not uploading more than two or three songs at a time?

From the novel "Spinster Dinner" (forksclovetofu), Friday, 14 January 2011 15:09 (fourteen years ago)

clearly this is meant for me to DJ everyone's day, right?

ilxor this could be a standout thread for you imo (ilxor), Friday, 14 January 2011 15:09 (fourteen years ago)

(soundtrack would just be a bunch of stuff from the ILX metal poll today, honestly)

ilxor this could be a standout thread for you imo (ilxor), Friday, 14 January 2011 15:09 (fourteen years ago)

it seems to be crazy glitchy, but the potential is awesome.

EZ Snappin, Friday, 14 January 2011 15:12 (fourteen years ago)

it's gonna need constant pruning and attention; i think certain tracks stick in its craw and you need to remove them as they come up.

From the novel "Spinster Dinner" (forksclovetofu), Friday, 14 January 2011 15:13 (fourteen years ago)

and ilxor, throw on some metal!

From the novel "Spinster Dinner" (forksclovetofu), Friday, 14 January 2011 15:13 (fourteen years ago)

:(
cant get in. have tried chrome and IE8.

it worked but then it didnt

cherry blossom, Friday, 14 January 2011 15:34 (fourteen years ago)

gotta hit some refresh buttons

From the novel "Spinster Dinner" (forksclovetofu), Friday, 14 January 2011 15:35 (fourteen years ago)

i did a refresh and it didn;t work and then i opened it in another window and that didn't work and then i made a cup of tea and that really worked but it didn't have any cake with it so that part was good rather than great

cherry blossom, Friday, 14 January 2011 15:36 (fourteen years ago)

so, are we supposed to upload mp3s to it ?
if so, then surely this is open to the same kind of troubles as muxtape ?

mark e, Friday, 14 January 2011 15:39 (fourteen years ago)

has anyone upped songs you like yet? I couldnt get in the room, it just froze everytime and im on firefox

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 14 January 2011 15:41 (fourteen years ago)

several people have upped stuff! feel free to try creating a different room and posting link here if you wanna.
you're not uploading the mp3s per se, you're streaming them just to your room. you can't replay.

From the novel "Spinster Dinner" (forksclovetofu), Friday, 14 January 2011 15:44 (fourteen years ago)

what stuff you liked has been upped? Did ilxor up some metal?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 14 January 2011 15:51 (fourteen years ago)

ahhh .. penny has dropped.

bernard snowy, Friday, 14 January 2011 15:55 (fourteen years ago)

the spinning artwork is freaking me out.
no idea how that happened.

mark e, Friday, 14 January 2011 15:56 (fourteen years ago)

this sounds weird spinning artwork?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 14 January 2011 15:58 (fourteen years ago)

it pulls your mp3 info including the album cover and then the album cover appears as a record, which spins.

From the novel "Spinster Dinner" (forksclovetofu), Friday, 14 January 2011 15:59 (fourteen years ago)

aw it's not doing the spinning album covers for me

bernard snowy, Friday, 14 January 2011 16:02 (fourteen years ago)

tempted up upload Mouldy Old Dough by Earl Brutus - but concnered this would allow the track to be 'leaked' ?

mark e, Friday, 14 January 2011 16:02 (fourteen years ago)

honestly i'm digging what forks is listening to too much to add my own shit yet!

bernard snowy, Friday, 14 January 2011 16:08 (fourteen years ago)

ha.
each room needs a bookmarking list so you can flip between each one.

mark e, Friday, 14 January 2011 16:10 (fourteen years ago)

okay, so if the record is totally black, it won't load the song. If it's got a picture on it, it's fine. If there's gray on the record, that's the playtime.

From the novel "Spinster Dinner" (forksclovetofu), Friday, 14 January 2011 16:46 (fourteen years ago)

so, are we supposed to upload mp3s to it ?

this doesn't allow direct downloads though does it? it's just streaming? it'd be more comparable to internet radio then, or someone running a shoutcast server, which i don't know the legality of.

ciderpress, Friday, 14 January 2011 16:52 (fourteen years ago)

yeah.
i realised once i got a room up and running and started playing around.
going to try and figure out which album artwork is going to be fun to watch spinning.

mark e, Friday, 14 January 2011 16:58 (fourteen years ago)

I guess "Listo Medellin" didn't play then since I shut my PC off when I left for work.

_Rudipherous_, Friday, 14 January 2011 17:41 (fourteen years ago)

wch is okay because I forgot I only like about 1/3 of that song a lot and the rest is kind of weird.

_Rudipherous_, Friday, 14 January 2011 17:42 (fourteen years ago)

aaaaand now it's down?

From the novel "Spinster Dinner" (forksclovetofu), Friday, 14 January 2011 17:44 (fourteen years ago)

seriously, we gotta get this on ilx. it's the killer app we need.

From the novel "Spinster Dinner" (forksclovetofu), Friday, 14 January 2011 19:26 (fourteen years ago)

i think it's an FMU guy who made the site; their community found it over the weekend and broke it.

tipper gore (nakhchivan), Thursday, 23 June 2011 00:57 (fourteen years ago)

not really. that's just a sticky detail in the permissions, but these two guys who run the place could honestly care less about your twitter or fb account.

Alpaca Lips (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 23 June 2011 00:57 (fourteen years ago)

the log of the last hour is dispiriting reading

tipper gore (nakhchivan), Thursday, 23 June 2011 01:05 (fourteen years ago)

It was not enjoyable for sure.

Alpaca Lips (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 23 June 2011 01:08 (fourteen years ago)

brotherlovesdub, Thursday, 23 June 2011 17:08 (fourteen years ago)

nevermind. cocksuckers just want to sabotage by uploading stupid shit then leaving the room. waste of time, imo.

Bumping. All is sweetness and harmony.

re: turntable.fm

Can't remember if it was mentioned here or not, but I just posted this in another place and thought I'd reiterate here.

I've played around on turntable.fm a little bit and, while it has some cool aspects, it turns the experience into more of a contest or game than I'm comfortable with. I'd rather just hang with people I know and play tunes instead of voting things up or down. Also, the chat portion of turntable.fm is deemphasized in favor of some totally dumb "virtual club" setting which looks like an 8 year-old's video game. No thanks.

this is all true but I like that it automatically rotates among the room DJs so your tracks are shuffled better

also if you just create a small room and have a few people in there it's just hanging with people you know playing tunes

dmr, Monday, 27 June 2011 22:02 (thirteen years ago)

i.e. you don't have to bother with the voting business

also like that it sends you an email if one of the "DJs" you're "following" logs on

dmr, Monday, 27 June 2011 22:03 (thirteen years ago)

so you can know if any friends are on

dmr, Monday, 27 June 2011 22:03 (thirteen years ago)

Your positives register with me, but I still think the format/layout is really non-conducive to a good time.

Alpaca Lips (Johnny Fever), Monday, 27 June 2011 22:06 (thirteen years ago)

it definitely looks corny. the avatars are like Wii characters.

dmr, Monday, 27 June 2011 22:21 (thirteen years ago)

oh yeah forgot I also like that you can search and play tracks from a database. I can't really upload anything from work so I could only use outloud as a listener

dmr, Tuesday, 28 June 2011 00:37 (thirteen years ago)

Fresh blood?

emil.y, Tuesday, 28 June 2011 00:48 (thirteen years ago)

turntable.fm, front page:

We're very sorry, but while we would love to let you in and rock out with us, we need to currently restrict turntable access to only the United States due to licensing constraints.

We are working very hard to try and get you in as soon as possible.

mike t-diva, Tuesday, 28 June 2011 09:00 (thirteen years ago)

That settles it, I guess? I think Outloud has worked really nicely, with few of the problems Listening Room had. It's a pity you have to use you a Twitter/FB account to log in, but you can just create a fake Twitter account like I did. I don't see any need to use another site at the moment.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 28 June 2011 09:12 (thirteen years ago)

I'll be around for bit starting...now.

outloud.fm/ILXORS — it's like Listening Room but not buggy and like turntable.fm but not designed for tweens.

Alpaca Lips (Johnny Fever), Friday, 1 July 2011 03:39 (thirteen years ago)

the ~tbrr~ room we did on LR for avantgarde/noise/etc was great for about four days before the software went to shit

id like to do something similar on outloud but the 20mb limit is pretty restrictive on duration and/or quality for a lot of this stuff idk
