I was wondering what the possible connection could have been. Easy though. Lindstrom for not being a racist murderer.

Apollo (Apollonian or Apollinian): the dream state or the wish to create order, principium individuationis (principle of individuation), plastic (visual) arts, beauty, clarity, stint to formed boundaries, individuality, celebration of appearance/illusion, human beings as artists (or media of art's manifestation), self-control, perfection, exhaustion of possibilities, creation, the rational/logical and reasonable.

Dionysus (Dionysian): chaos, intoxication, celebration of nature, instinctual, intuitive, pertaining to the sensation of pleasure or pain, individuality dissolved and hence destroyed, wholeness of existence, orgiastic passion, dissolution of all boundaries, excess, human being(s) as the work and glorification of art, destruction, the irrational and non-logical.

burzum guy is a terrible person

plax (ico), Friday, 14 January 2011 22:05 (fourteen years ago)

they are certainly a textbook example of contrasting temperaments in the northern european artist. burzum is a degenerate autocthonist, warped by dark and cold and the imprecations of imagined forefathers, youthful terror giving way to slowburning psychosis. for all his paeans to the hyperborean wastes and their fierce gods, you suspect he would have been happy enough as a quisling collaborator playing furtwangler lp's for the village kiddies and curbstomping communists. a fucking pig, no doubt.

lindstrom is a dreamer who has eloped from the frigid taiga but never allows the dreams of sunnier shores to entirely take over. he is generous in spirit and syncretic in disposition, happy to borrow ideas from afar that somehow prosper at an unlikely latitude.

Do you think Lindstrøm has listened to Burzum?

The Dutch of Dukes, Saturday, 15 January 2011 05:42 (fourteen years ago)

i'd guess so? norway is a smallish place and burzum must be a huge story

nakhchivan, Saturday, 15 January 2011 05:44 (fourteen years ago)

annie (from norway) four years out for this poll sadly

i remember her talking about how she ended up talking to a bunch of norwegian black metal dudes at some national awards show?

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Saturday, 15 January 2011 07:48 (fourteen years ago)

plus there was that story about her dating him

I think most people here have listened to Burzum.

abcfsk, Saturday, 15 January 2011 09:45 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, she used go out with him. "Oh no! Oh no! You've got it all wrong! You think you're chocolate but you're chewing gum!"

"Now I do not feel so good... Fetch me my petrol and matches..."

Lindstrom... apart from the obvious two things (talent and politics) he just rocks much better facial hair.

In what kind of prison can you get away with wearing your beard in a plait? I mean I'm not a Daily Mail reader but there's something to be said, in some cases, for the shocking reverberating clang of the prison gates behind you and some time spent in an unpleasant environment to give you pause for thought when you've murdered someone.

"Nils, we need more hair products sending down to "cell" 78, Mr Vikernes has run out of things to tie his beard plait with. And while you're down there, give him some more merch for his own band. And take some photos for his hate crime inspiring website. And give him the latest version of garageband."

Cracker Flocka Flame (Doran), Saturday, 15 January 2011 10:25 (fourteen years ago)

yeah, what's wrong with bread and water and daily savage beatings?

I'll make you bang, combinating with smang (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 15 January 2011 10:55 (fourteen years ago)

Sorry, no, you're right. The scales have fallen from my eyes. Metal merch and hair products for all hate crime murderers!

Have you seen a photograph of his cell? It's nicer than my bedroom.

Cracker Flocka Flame (Doran), Saturday, 15 January 2011 11:10 (fourteen years ago)

and you're not a Daily Mail reader you say?

Why don't you get back under your bridge and wait for some goats?

Cracker Flocka Flame (Doran), Saturday, 15 January 2011 11:16 (fourteen years ago)

surely the creature comforts of norwegian cuddle wolfenstein prisons are anathema to a true viking like varg. he used to live in a cave in the desolate mountain tundra, subsisting on a diet of raw goat entrails and thistles.

is filosofem still seen as his best work?

nakhchivan, Saturday, 15 January 2011 11:42 (fourteen years ago)

Wd start with Filosofem or the combined Burzum/Aske disc = first album + ensuing EP.

I'm not crawling any further into the controversial "murder is a bad thing" debate, but look forward to the upcoming Velázquez vs Caravaggio
thread for an in depth discussion on painting technique.

Yes piece by Dave Q

a special freak who falls outside of all (Ioannis), Saturday, 15 January 2011 11:47 (fourteen years ago)

Purely on music, L every time. V' solo output is laughably overrated, generally by sad little men who value soap opera over sonics.

And to compare him to Caravaggio, one of my favourite painters, is risible.

Cracker Flocka Flame (Doran), Saturday, 15 January 2011 12:03 (fourteen years ago)

Actually, strike that... I have no idea at all who rates Burzum or why they do it but personally I dislike his music for purely musical reasons. I can and have to divorce art and artists on a daily basis.

I

Cracker Flocka Flame (Doran), Saturday, 15 January 2011 12:05 (fourteen years ago)

the caravaggio comparison, fwiw, wasn't a reference to the quality of his art so much as certain biographical similarities but hey

nakhchivan, Saturday, 15 January 2011 12:08 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, I get it, and I really, really don't want a massive row about Burzum... just not worth it.

I have the cleaning to attend to and the racist, wife beater Miles Davis is on the stereo. Good day to you all.

Cracker Flocka Flame (Doran), Saturday, 15 January 2011 12:13 (fourteen years ago)

i don't think any cunt who enjoys black metal could argue that varg is anything other than brilliant as far as the genre goes. i listen to lindstrom more often though so voted for him.

À la recherche du temps Pardew (jim in glasgow), Saturday, 15 January 2011 12:14 (fourteen years ago)

Doran you were hardly the only guy on here going "ugggh Varg is evil" so I wasn't singling you out in that regard.

Douchery doesn't factor into this kind of A vs B thing for me and I think it's a pretty trite argument to make. I'm more familiar with Burzum but assume that I will be really into Lindstrøm when I listen to him seriously. I do find Varg intersting as a character, but don't think that his persona(lity) sends Burzum into any corners that haven't been capably explored by their peers. I'm voting for them partly because I really enjoy their horrible, morally abhorrent music and partly because I like voting for the underdog.

I'll make you bang, combinating with smang (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 15 January 2011 12:19 (fourteen years ago)

Lindstrøm, any day!

nakhchivan, Saturday, 15 January 2011 13:29 (fourteen years ago)

I would guess Lindstrøm sells more records in Norway alone, but neither is exactly a typical hitlist item.

You're Twistin' My Melody Man! (Geir Hongro), Saturday, 15 January 2011 13:39 (fourteen years ago)

I genuinely love both Lind's and Varg's music, and have listened to much of both discographies, but I gotta go with my Dionysian side this time.

ps love this poll.

Checked the statistics, and neither has spent even one single week in the Norwegian album charts ever. Röyksopp and Dimmu Borgir have both topped the album charts though.

Blatantly untrue? The Lindstrøm & Christabelle album was a friggin top 10 hit.

abcfsk, Sunday, 16 January 2011 16:14 (fourteen years ago)

OK, for some strange reason he is listed as Lindstrom, which doesn't make sense in a Norwegian list/site. "Where You Go I Go To" hit #11 as well.

Actually, taking into consideration how most people on ILM hate Morrissey, Elvis Costello and Eric Clapton for considerably less obvious quotes, I am surprised outspoken self-proclaimed racist and nazi Varg Vikernes gets this many votes.

Actually, if the point here would have been to have a yin/yang, Sissel vs. Burzum would have been a better pick. Dunno how familiar you guys are with Sissel, but she participated a lot of her voice to the "Titanic" soundtrack, plus she also provided vocals here:
