Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 14 January 2011 20:57 (fourteen years ago)

is there any shock that Whiney is the falsest voter?

ilxor, Friday, 14 January 2011 20:58 (fourteen years ago)

In addition there is, just for starters:

- bar-chart version of the winners table, so you can see the margins more vividly
- sample retabulation if we only counted each voter's top 10 (like in certain other polls)
- enthusiasm scores for all albums
- a Fealty ranking that weights votes according to what % of the voter's votes are for that album's genre
- a Kvltosis ranking to show how much of an album's support came from the poll mainstream or from its outsiders
- album similarity by voter overlap
- a full grid of how many votes of each point-value each album got
- an as-the-votes-came-in tracking of the EW/Agalloch race
- two different overviews of the race for the top 5
- nominees without votes
- voter centricity
- voter genre and country biases
- the dreaded Falseness chart
- voter similarity by album overlap
- winners by genre
- ranking of genres themselves
- leading voters by genre
- genres vs countries
- winners by country
- ranking of countries themselves
- leading voters by country
- a map of the albums by country

So, you know, click over and take a look.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 14 January 2011 21:00 (fourteen years ago)

The winners by country list is great!
Thanks!!!!

no pop, no style -- all simply (Viceroy), Friday, 14 January 2011 21:01 (fourteen years ago)

Some notes:

That EW/Agalloch race was incredibly close. Two more voters could have changed the final result. And the fact that 60% of the voters in an 80-person poll voted for EW, Agalloch and Alcest is really remarkable.

The Winner Chart shows pretty strikingly how the mostly-flat points curve takes a dramatic turn upwards starting with Kylesa. That top 13 has a lot of consensus support behind it.

Striking, too, as I noted before when Algerian didn't want me to, that all but one of the abums in the top 35 got at least one #1 vote.

glenn mcdonald, Friday, 14 January 2011 21:03 (fourteen years ago)

wow is that a ballot from Sim0n R(eyn0lds)??

ilxor, Friday, 14 January 2011 21:03 (fourteen years ago)

Pretty proud, myself, of being the leading voter for Norway.

glenn mcdonald, Friday, 14 January 2011 21:04 (fourteen years ago)

can't view the voter centricity chart?

Siegbran, Friday, 14 January 2011 21:05 (fourteen years ago)

So many stats to absorb! How did Korn not end up in the "Shite" genre?

one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 14 January 2011 21:05 (fourteen years ago)

Ha I thought this time around I was finally falling into the mainline as the votes came through but I still came in 71st on centricity

O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Friday, 14 January 2011 21:06 (fourteen years ago)

If you want to see how your own picks ranked, do this:
- find and click on yourself
- click the 40 (or whatever) next to Ballot
- click the "Rank" column heading and pick "reverse order"

glenn mcdonald, Friday, 14 January 2011 21:08 (fourteen years ago)

Hmm, that chart looks OK in my browser, Siegbran. Try refreshing?

glenn mcdonald, Friday, 14 January 2011 21:09 (fourteen years ago)

wow is that a ballot from Sim0n R(eyn0lds)??

― ilxor,

dont be silly. I didn't include surname so voters couldnt be googled etc. I put in ilx names when they were included or recognised. Most of the voters I think voted in the all-time poll so I guess that brought the metal thread more followers which is nice.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 14 January 2011 21:12 (fourteen years ago)

Voters by Top 10 Votes shows you who picked how many of the top 10, ranked by how many points they gave those top 10. James T came incredibly close to getting all 10 into his own top 10.

glenn mcdonald, Friday, 14 January 2011 21:12 (fourteen years ago)

four albums w/ no votes

Pathfinder - Beyond the Space, Beyond the Time
White Hills & GNOD - White Hills Drop Out With Gnod
White Hills - Stolen Stars Are Left for No One
Witchsorrow - Witchsorrow

ilxor, Friday, 14 January 2011 21:13 (fourteen years ago)

White Hills s/t album was nominated so i suspect that drew votes away?

ilxor, Friday, 14 January 2011 21:13 (fourteen years ago)

Hipster Metal

Albums 1

Album Chart 510 · 21 · The Sword - Warp Riders

ilxor, Friday, 14 January 2011 21:14 (fourteen years ago)

And although it's funny that Whiney was the top of the Falseness ranking, all those Falseness scores are impressively low. Even the one guy with 4 False Metal votes had 36 solidly non-false votes.

And yeah, we didn't keep track of who nominated what, but I'd love to know who nominated the ones that got no votes in the end.

glenn mcdonald, Friday, 14 January 2011 21:14 (fourteen years ago)

that is really the only "hipster metal" album in the entire poll??

xp

ilxor, Friday, 14 January 2011 21:15 (fourteen years ago)

Congrats to whoever is "Emily M" for beating me to lowest placed in centricity (and also for almost rediculously eclectic taste - Countess and Korn in the same top 10?)

340 Electric Wizard, Black Masses

is that all the metal in the P&J this year from our list? Last year 3 or 4 were in the top 40!

xp

Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 19 January 2011 03:43 (fourteen years ago)

i was only comparing the high end from the ilm poll to their relative placement on p+j; it seems that electric wizard's p+j voters were relatively less enthusiastic than their ilm voters (and i assume, without looking, that agalloch's were very enthusiastic in both places).

did ilxor ever report back with his reviews of the metal purchases (from this poll) that he promised to do?

Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 19:19 (fourteen years ago)

stuff i bought from the top 100 (had heard bit & pieces before the poll, even voted for some, but am glad to have the full-lengths handy -- all of these are really great, nice consistent bunch)

i probably owned about 10-12 others before the poll... these are supplements

4. Alcest - Écailles de Lune (1,330 Points, 49 Votes, 4 #1s)
9. Harvey Milk - A Small Turn of Human Kindness (1,015 Points, 35 Votes, 3 #1s)
10. Dawnbringer - Nucleus (1,009 Points, 34 Votes, 2 #1s)
11. Ghost - Opus Eponymous (868 Points, 32 Votes, 1 #1)
18. Drudkh - Handful of Stars (665 Points, 25 Votes, 1 #1)
34. Black Breath - Heavy Breathing (500 Points, 19 Votes, 1 #1)
54. Shining - Blackjazz (375 Points, 16 Votes)

19 · Iron Maiden - The Final Frontier
18 · Boris & Ian Astbury - BXI
17 · Dawnbringer - Nucleus
16 · Nadja - Under the Jaguar Sun
15 · Gnaw Their Tongues - L'Arrivée de la Terne Mort Triomphante

5 · Monarch - Sabbat Noir
4 · Danzig - Deth Red Sabaoth
3 · Ozzy Osbourne - Scream
2 · The Body - All the Waters of the Earth Turn to Blood
1 · Linkin Park - A Thousand Suns

i've bolded the stuff i'd change -- not sure where everything would rank or what would drop, but i've engaged much more with the albums bolded and would bump each of them up significantly higher

i guess wizard/alcest/shining would all jump somewhere around deftones' placing, right in the top 5-10 range

agalloch would prob jump to #2 or so

stuff i'd rank lower: torche, twilight, boris/astbury, neurosis live album,.....

how's that for a quick recap?

I'd like to thank all of you that voted and nominated my band Hellbeard.. i realize there was some contraversy or whatever, but nontheless someone put us up, and you voted for it, so on behalf of Hellbeard I say thank you and good on you!! This list is amazing, especailly be it that it isn't chalk full of mainstream watered down caca that passes for heavy music these days.. My only regret is that I didn't hear about it sooner, to cast some votes.

HAILS!!!
thanks again, Sean, Hellbeard

p.s.. SHAMERLESS PLUG!!! The Hellbeard record is available on itunes, zune, cdbaby, amazon, or where ever you purchase your digital download music.. Or if you'r nicey nice, maybe we'll mail you one, but you better be really nice... lol!

How is your local scene? Bay Area has such obvious metal history I just wondered how it was now.

but that's different! We know practically nothing about them!

Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 20:32 (fourteen years ago)

Wow thanks you guys, its really an honor..

No label as of yet, but its been a recent revelation to us to even go for that. we really just wanted to come up with some really heavy shit, that none of ever tried before. Personally for me, this IS my favorite genre of music, so to finally have the chance to write it and play it, its been more than aertically fullfilling.

We are a 4 piece, originally a 5 piece(3 guitars) but our bassist decided to leave due do personal issues and utter life bullshit beyond his control, we decided to have one of the giutrs move over to bass, figure out how do keep all those same parts going without losing anything. Its been a little rough, but we got a handle on it, and are writing new stuff now, to hopefully record an EP in the summer, if the planets aligne the right way..

We've all been in other local bands, none very noteable, although I was in a Rock'n'roll band w/ Mark Oseguada from Death Angel on vox called All-Time Highs!- pretty much bar fightin rock'n'roll like The Bronx, The Hellacopters..

The scene here in the bay area was absolute shit about 6 or 7 years ago.. But in the last 3-4 years, especailly for heavier music (which I say cuz there is more than just metal going on) its been AMAZING!! Especailly in Oakland.. tons of warehouse shows have poped up, all underground- no advertising, except fliers, they don't even give out adresses usually-with tons of kids showing up in a glorious D.I.Y. old school punk rock kinda way.. grindcore bands, are playing with hardcore bands, playing with doomy bands, with black metal bands, playing with crust punk bands, playing with death metal bands.. its awesome. I'm stoked to be witnessing it.. I saw Black Breath in one of these spots a few months back, and it was AMAzing!!
It reminds me of the mid to late 80s thrash scene, but I think there is different intensity now than then. Its a little more serious, where that scene then was a little more about the party. these spots in Oakland are about the music and the band pouring thier hearts out, and emoting.. its very very cool..

SeanWayne, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 20:49 (fourteen years ago)

grindcore bands, are playing with hardcore bands, playing with doomy bands, with black metal bands, playing with crust punk bands, playing with death metal bands..

That's ILM Metalheads in a nutshell!

Algerian Goalkeeper, Wednesday, 16 February 2011 21:02 (fourteen years ago)

Hellbeard was originally a more dirty rock band called 66seven-say Queens of the Stone Age without any of the goofy shit mixwd with a slower Motorhead. I joined when their drummer left, and added some well needed power to the band.. over the coarse of maybe 6 months, my musical influence started to be so much that the music was drastically changing, all with thier blessing, and it warrented the name change.. Our singer/guitarist Joe had come up with the name, and in hoping no pirate tags would come up, it stuck.. Joe is very dear friend, who I've known for years, amd he actually introduced me to my now fiance... I ended up bringing in James on the at the time 3rd guitar, to bring in some of the more keyboard/pad ambient stuff you hear-I'd played with him before in a past project, and I've been very good friends with him over the years, but he's absolutely out of his fucking head..

We really just try and write music to satisfy ourselves really. we don't try to put any boundries on anything, and we don't try to stick what we do in a box. plus, we're older cats, so we don't give a flying fuck anymore about what others think, but its awesome and very humbling to get praise for what we do, especailly from across the pond- Hey this interweb shit is alright.. lol!
