Can't belive this thread doesn't exist.

She's got a few minor classics: "The Way You Love Me," the femme bourgeois anthem "Superwoman," "Secret Rendezvous," and the #1 pop hit "Romantic."

I do miss this kind of anonymous pre-Mary J. Blige R&B voice: "independent" yet allowed L.A. Reid and Babyface or Jam and Lewis to script her angst.

"Superwoman" -- perfect "One Less Bell To Answer"-style breakup-during-breakfast middle-class soul-pop which I'll take over anything I've ever heard by Mary J., no fucking contest -- made my Pazz & Jop singles ballot the year it came out. (1989, I guess.) No concrete opinion about Karyn White's other stuff, but guess I should check out a best-of sometime, assuming one exists.

"Superwoman" is perfect.

Only one I've heard, I think, is "Romantic."

Used to love "The Way You Love Me"--I kind of conflate it, Bobby Brown's "Every Little Step," and the Boys' "Dial My Heart" together, so I'm guessing they all shared the same producer (L.A. Reid & Babyface?).

fourteen years pass...

heard "romantic" in the grocery store this morning. still a huge chorus that's instantly memorized. that made me listen to "secret rendezvous" probably for the first time since it was new and djp otm: it's a perfect song.
