I too love that album, while recognising it's far from his best. On a similar theme, his 'Percussions' album from the early 60s is a fascinating attempt at incorporating, no using African styles into his stuff. It must have been received with no little shock at the time. It also sounds incredible today, I reckon, with the hindsight of knowing the rest of his oeuvre. Coming back to Aux Armes... it's so perverse and done presumably in the knowledge that it would alienate large sections of his audience. It's also notable for the way in which French lends itself to reggae. It sounds so lovely!
