Hmmm... no love for Nivea - Animalistic which is the first all produced The-Dream album before his debut. But then again he was still finding his sound and it leaned towards crunk a little.

im of the opinion that loveking will age well i think its hurt by dream fatigue

*gets the power* (deej), Monday, 17 January 2011 21:42 (fourteen years ago)

more w/ andy k than rtc on that i guess

*gets the power* (deej), Monday, 17 January 2011 21:43 (fourteen years ago)

no i think that's fair. had a similar car-journey rapprochement with it over xmas myself, otherwise it'd been a 7 (in the profound no-one-cares-about-a-7 sense). but while i'll most likely grow fonder of the reheated stuff the outright failings i think will always remain.

r|t|c, Monday, 17 January 2011 21:55 (fourteen years ago)

What are the outright failures r|t|c

I'm certainly not saying there aren't any but I'm curious to see where the overlaps are.

Not sure about my ranking except that the top 3 are the same as every other serious player in this thread.

God, all these Terius threads blur into one rain-smeared check.

Gus Van Sotosyn (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 17 January 2011 22:44 (fourteen years ago)

It's probably less a tie than "on any given day, it could be either one." Love King has definitely surpassed the first two, though.

Andy K, Monday, 17 January 2011 22:46 (fourteen years ago)

I'm with Andy.

from this thread memoirs is obv the most underrated

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Monday, 17 January 2011 23:23 (fourteen years ago)

i also would not be surprised if basic instinct ended up higher than love/hate for me, though possibly i'm reacting to the recent "OBVIOUSLY love/hate is the best terius album DON'T WE ALL AGREE" line i've been seeing a lot of recently

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Monday, 17 January 2011 23:24 (fourteen years ago)

scratch one recent

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Monday, 17 January 2011 23:24 (fourteen years ago)

Agreed... it's obviously not

*rolls eyes* - that's been the dominant non-pfork crowd consensus since day 1

seriously dogg basic instinct over l/h is an instant sb

fruit of the goon (k3vin k.), Monday, 17 January 2011 23:44 (fourteen years ago)

lolwut, it's consensus according to a handful of people here, two of whom are pfork writers

yeah i meant to say "ilx" but point still stands

fruit of the goon (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 18 January 2011 00:03 (fourteen years ago)

yeah well i am not part of that consensus

lex diamonds (lex pretend), Tuesday, 18 January 2011 00:05 (fourteen years ago)

i'm aware of that; i was pointing out that calling the trend of considering l/h to be his best work "recent" seemed false, that's all

fruit of the goon (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 18 January 2011 00:15 (fourteen years ago)

It's a strong tie between Love King and How To Be A Lady Vol. 1.

With repeated side-by-side listens of both albums, I've noticed that an awful lot of the songs on Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel seem to lift the backing tracks and melodies from songs on Love/Hate.

Rotating & Blunders (MintIce), Tuesday, 18 January 2011 02:24 (fourteen years ago)

so far as far as favorite of his solo albums, I'm giving the slight nod to Love vs. Money, just due to the sweeping epic nature of it. must be my metal background but I tend to always pick those as the favorite.

all amazing though.

five deadly venoms (San Te), Tuesday, 18 January 2011 04:06 (fourteen years ago)

Hmmm... no love for Nivea - Animalistic which is the first all produced The-Dream album before his debut. But then again he was still finding his sound and it leaned towards crunk a little.

i thought about this, but didn't terius just do production on this, mostly? I was going for stuff where he also handled a fair chunk of the songwriting

ilxor, Tuesday, 18 January 2011 04:23 (fourteen years ago)

my ranking looks something like--

Love King = Love Vs Money >>> Love/Hate = Basic Instinct = How to Be a Lady >>>>> Memoirs

sorry lex

first two are interchangeable for #1 depending on day/mood/etc.

ilxor, Tuesday, 18 January 2011 04:25 (fourteen years ago)

food for thought, here's how these albums rank in sales:
1. Love/Hate
2. Mariah
3. Love Vs. Money
4. Love King
5. Ciara
6. Electrik Red

some dude, Tuesday, 18 January 2011 13:23 (fourteen years ago)

Genuinely surprised by that, thought even an underperforming Mariah album would blow all of these away sales-wise.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 18 January 2011 13:29 (fourteen years ago)

This has probably been discussed many times over, but Soundscan numbers on R&B and rap albums have always seemed especially iffy to me. It's been over ten years since I worked in retail or distribution, so maybe the situation is significantly different now. Then (and I'm guessing now), lots of mom and pop stores and small chains weren't on Soundscan. Soundscan attempted to provide "balance" by weighting sales at stores that did have Soundscan. Some stores were weighted up to 10. (Guess which stores were treated nicer by labels and distributors.) So, one copy of the self-titled Aaliyah album at Super-Weighted Retailer would count as ten copies sold, while sales at 10-12 (maybe) non-Soundscan stores weren't reported.

J0rdan S., Friday, 18 March 2011 07:41 (fourteen years ago)

still think it's a bit weak at the middle & the very end but "the impossible" -> "the impossible (reprise)" is so pretty -- vocoders kill me

J0rdan S., Friday, 18 March 2011 07:48 (fourteen years ago)

layin in the bed bumpin joedci etc

J0rdan S., Friday, 18 March 2011 07:50 (fourteen years ago)

and "candy bling" is still one of the hardest hitting songs terius has ever written

J0rdan S., Friday, 18 March 2011 07:51 (fourteen years ago)

also the use of interpolations on the album is unique in the dream discog & very effective across the album imo

J0rdan S., Friday, 18 March 2011 07:52 (fourteen years ago)

if i'm reading the song right it's about a dead childhood love? he's never written anything else like that right?

J0rdan S., Friday, 18 March 2011 07:59 (fourteen years ago)

unless the "doug e fresh 'all the way to heaven'" line is not as literal as i'm reading it

anyway this song kills me

J0rdan S., Friday, 18 March 2011 08:00 (fourteen years ago)

song being "candy bling" obv

sorry for blogging

J0rdan S., Friday, 18 March 2011 08:00 (fourteen years ago)

Memoirs drags mostly because of the non-Terius songs that were needlessly packed on. Cut those four or five tracks, and you've got a really smart, taut record.

Particularly hate how that desperate, Glee-ified Foreigner cover closes the album. It's like a vote of no confidence in all the songs that preceded it.

Evan R, Friday, 18 March 2011 14:48 (fourteen years ago)

that's one of the most pleasant tracks on the whole album imo, the singer and the material clash badly throughout

some dude, Friday, 18 March 2011 14:50 (fourteen years ago)

i really don't have many complaints about memoirs at all, i like its languorous pace, i even think the cover - which is redundant in isolation - works really well as a conclusion to it all. i guess i don't care that much about "inseparable" or "angels cry", and "standing o" doesn't quite come off - wouldn't get rid of another track though.

lex pretend, Friday, 18 March 2011 14:55 (fourteen years ago)

j0rdan is right about "candy bling" too, devastating once you realise what it's about (and the way she murmurs that one line that tells you half to herself)

lex pretend, Friday, 18 March 2011 14:55 (fourteen years ago)

Still love "Ribbon," too. Also:

one thing I didn't realize until just now is that August Alsina is signed to Def Jam via Radio Killa Records -- i wonder if The-Dream is just leaving Def Jam as an artist or if his imprint is no more too, which would be odd since he finally has an artist that's blowing up

all-tricky-&-dream nicole scherzinger record out next week:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JKA_DcgowVQ

schlump, Wednesday, 15 October 2014 20:07 (eleven years ago)

So many mixed emotions. The Terius/Tricky LPs are some of my favorite music ever, but Nicole Scherzinger is super bland, and unless Nash and Stewart have somehow expanded their bag of tricks it's hard to get too excited about this. Also there are still some heinous (absolutely heinous) assault allegations hanging over The-Dream's head, leaving me disinclined to welcome any new material from the guy.

Evan R, Wednesday, 15 October 2014 20:59 (eleven years ago)

nicole scherzinger is not remotely bland

lex pretend, Wednesday, 15 October 2014 22:15 (eleven years ago)

lol knew that'd be a lex batsignal

k3vin k., Wednesday, 15 October 2014 22:47 (eleven years ago)

idk scherzinger's non-blandness has been covered by many posters so many times on ilx by now

"your love" is still one of the singles of the year, though i wasn't so into "run" (but those big ballads often leave you cold until you're in the right ~circumstance)

lex pretend, Thursday, 16 October 2014 09:20 (eleven years ago)

i for one am eagerly anticipating the album

lex pretend, Thursday, 16 October 2014 09:20 (eleven years ago)

out tomorrow apparently

longneck, Thursday, 16 October 2014 09:38 (eleven years ago)

Weirdly though I've always felt that Nicole's definite anti-blandness tends to blaze out of PCD material more than on her solo stuff, usually.

But I am up for this album - obv the worst part of Terius' material these past few years has been, well, Terius.

Tim F, Thursday, 16 October 2014 09:38 (eleven years ago)

bar those two early solo singles that never did anything, nicole's solo material has mostly just been inferior to her PCDs material

lex pretend, Thursday, 16 October 2014 10:12 (eleven years ago)

flicked thru this. quite weird. let's dial the first-impressions-ometer to.... hmm yes... unforgiving! so even taking the possibility of contractual obligation/tax scams into account still smacks of a surprisingly shoddy demo collection (had actually kinda hoped for all the milian elope cyborg superbitch bits retooled...)

the workable nascent direction suggested by 'your love' and 'electric blue' (clever terius, no one will ever suspect) is quickly left by the wayside, after that 'heartbreaker' stood out as a good fit.... 'god of war' should have been exactly the cliche dawn richard stomper ur heart desires but instead they somehow pull defeat from the jaws of victory with some inane "ur so annoying" lines

the um, eye-catching title track is i guess supposed to be a startlingly honest ★★★★☆ 'pretty hurts' type fake boo-hoo but coming at the end of this just seems like a thwarted album selfreview sigh

r|t|c, Thursday, 16 October 2014 11:17 (eleven years ago)

*sheds tear*

longneck, Thursday, 16 October 2014 13:04 (eleven years ago)

damn rtc in the cut that's a scary sight

snrub goin up on a tuesday (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 16 October 2014 15:07 (eleven years ago)

rtc's review was what i was fearing but i'm happily surprised i like it a lot more than that, though the title track is a car crash and exactly as described. it's engagingly light and airy, i'm into la scherz duetting with a slowed-down, pitched-down version of herself

lex pretend, Friday, 17 October 2014 12:41 (eleven years ago)

oh lol i did wonder who that was. innntersting

light and airy isn't incorrect i guess but without much to say or sell (even herself as star) i didnt see what there was to engage with other than perhaps the v curious anticlimactic insipidity in itself - for a putative new record deal and renounced media commitments comeback it's less self-effacing than self-abnegating. and really if nicole stans do exist (and i subscribe to the theory she isnt bland but cmon) is any of this what they might want to hear? even lewis hamilton won't shed a single extra follicle

r|t|c, Friday, 17 October 2014 13:22 (eleven years ago)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lN5IniOFCr0

still far and away the best look for her here imo

r|t|c, Friday, 17 October 2014 13:26 (eleven years ago)

presumably randomly drawn out of a plastic bag of terius toni braxton demos but still

r|t|c, Friday, 17 October 2014 13:29 (eleven years ago)

yeah i liked that one a lot

it certainly doesn't play to the strengths i imagined nicole had but idk i'm not getting the "this could be anyone" vibe that would completely kill it, and neither is it the kind of hodgepodge compromise so many other albums have been this year. i don't know if it's enough to stan for, it's only been one listen

lex pretend, Friday, 17 October 2014 13:44 (eleven years ago)

yeah no it won't be stan v hate either way. i agree doesn't quite seem anonymous as such but nor am i entirely sure if that's not just solely because it doesn't bear (or bother to bear) the rictus of the despo modern age
