Sky Arts - Classic or Dud?

It's difficult:

Every time we've looked at changing from Freeview to some other (and god knows we get enough leaflets addressed to me, personally, selling their packages), I've nixed the idea because there's nothing of interest to me or anyone else:

1) Not into Sport at all, and not really wanting to watch Movies, blanketly.
2) Kids have their CBBC channels, they don't really need ToonTV/CartNet (getting too old for it anyways)
3) The 'music' channels seem to be mainly about how big the stars' houses/cars are, or how pouty they get if they get the wrong colour marshmallow. Or, 16 year olds' birthday parties where they are very rich and still not happy enough... and so on..

But, then I see "Sky Arts" and oh...

See, the occasional good 'music' programming doesn't warrant getting the package which is 99% stuff I either have already, or don't want. Plus, it's sky! with their nasty news and/or what they otherwise think are 'entertainiment'! Plus, the suspicion that they'd axe SkyArts as soon as they want to.

Pixies documentaries! Bonzos live!

you can get a Sky package without films, sports, the kids channels or the music channels and still get Sky Arts. I will say - there doesn't feel like as much on it as there used to be, but I'm not big into watching band docs/live sets. They seem to get quite heavy rotation for a month at a time. Depends how you consume telly, really. I'd've thought if it's just a case of wanting to watch this stuff it might be cheaper and easier to get DVDs or find them via the Internet?

They have been pretty committed to Sky Arts tho - it's been going a long while now, there are 2 stations, they've commissioned some stuff for it. I have it for the movies and the opera mainly.

i will now stop advertising. it's just another product. all products are made by hateful capitalist dirtbags, so imo you either live in a yurt or choose stuff that makes you happy.

More advertising: Sky Arts is great. Plus the new channel Sky Atlantic starts February 1st (with all of HBO's shows past and present)

(And Sky Atlantic is free with all the basic Sky packages)

we had to drop the sports and movies tho, they cost a fortune and lol exciting new economic climate

plus I don't watch a ton of broadcast TV and mrs v. would be happy with a channel that was just Cake Boss 24/7, it becomes this kinda unused luxury that you get used to having around.

yeah, but is Sky arts free with all the basic packages?

I see Virg is also advertising with Sky chans, but SkyArts doesn't seem to be on it.

Mark G, Wednesday, 19 January 2011 10:37 (fourteen years ago)

Sky Arts is 1 pound a month on top of the basic iirc

not just Sky Arts, it's in a bundle with the TCM channels and some of the lifestyle stuff

Will have to consider it.

I'd rather wait for the dvds than pay a subscription to Sky...

I know, I know, is there another way? That richard branson seems nicer than Murdocj....

(slightly facetious there, but sort of srsly..)

Sky Arts is alright...the music coverage is pretty poor, but if you like oddly stilted documentaries about Matthew Barney yr laughing.

Best music-related stuff on Sky Arts are the occasional vintage concert films. Obviously, no one needs a film of late 80s Who, but you get some good and interesting 70s stuff. For example, no one who has Sky Arts need buy the forthcoming Live and Dangerous reissue, because the film that comprises the DVD with that package is on Sky Arts all the time.

four months pass...

Sky Player: Now there's a thing...

I see from the website that you can play things if you are a subscriber, but othet things are available for a pound.

Which seems OK, but there doesn't seem to be a link to actually buy/download.

Can anyone make sense of this?

Mark G, Friday, 10 June 2011 08:57 (fourteen years ago)

on the right hand side there's three buttons and the bottom one is Subscribe, that seems to take you to the right place?

Yeah, but then they talk about "monthly subscriptions" etc, whereas on that first page it says "buy this for £1" so where can I get this for this sum?

Mark G, Friday, 10 June 2011 09:12 (fourteen years ago)

it says on the FAQ you can buy individual programmes once you've created a payment account, i don't think u need to buy a subscription when u register

Ah, right, I'll give it a go.
