not much talk about him on ILX. anyway, what to search and to destroy?

imo search green ghost project and Time is Money. love his gritty, true to life lyrics, and his commanding flow. plus he has chosen good producers for his solo joints.

yea honestly I have the Lox albums on order and only just got the first one in the mail today so haven't been able to listen yet. though I've heard the guests they've done with Jay-Z/Biggie/etc

ghost sessions was in my top ten the year it dropped. idk hes one of those dudes who's almost always classic but released some inconsistent major label records

I'm all about this one:

great rapper, never gets enough props, was hoping "B.M.F." would raise his profile a little but it really didn't, did it?

i'll try to get into specific tracks later but here's how i would rank his official-ish albums:
1. A Gangster And A Gentleman
2. The Green Ghost Project
3. Super Gangster (Extraordinary Gentleman)
4. The Ghost Sessions
5. Time Is Money

some dude, Friday, 21 January 2011 01:48 (fourteen years ago)

ghost sessions would be higher but the rock remixes kinda drag down its consistency and really they're all worthwhile imo

some dude, Friday, 21 January 2011 01:48 (fourteen years ago)

i just skip the rock remixes -- that album non-rock remixes is way way better than green ghost imo

*gets the power* (deej), Friday, 21 January 2011 01:56 (fourteen years ago)

my ranking's somewhat arbitrary because again there's not a dud in the bunch. but A Gangster And A Gentleman is definitely tops, kinda slept on record and hits a nice between-Blueprint-and-GRODT sweet spot in NYC rap.

"Burn One Down" is also awesome

i love tampon spaceship (San Te), Friday, 21 January 2011 02:02 (fourteen years ago)

here's something I can't figure out -- did The Lox ever rename themselves D-Block, or is that just their record label? I swore I remember in the late 00s looking them up and seeing wikipedia had renamed their article "D-Block", but now it's a separate article about the label only.

styles p's verse on "Fuck You" is pretty inspired (I am listening right now!)

i love tampon spaceship (San Te), Friday, 21 January 2011 02:13 (fourteen years ago)

yeah i mean those are like the bonus tracks on "The B. Coming" imo -- simply dont exist

*gets the power* (deej), Friday, 21 January 2011 02:13 (fourteen years ago)

lol I skip the bonus tracks on at least half the rap albums I own. except for like albums like Nicki Minaj Pink Friday where they're half of the good songs :/

it is kinda funny how they've done little to distinguish D-Block as a distinct brand from The Lox -- for years the only apparently artist on D-Block outside of the 3 of them was Jae Hood, then he defected, and they've got a bunch of little random 3rd string D-Block artists like Bully and Team Arliss who do most of the rapping on the D-Block projects. they've has been threatening to sign with Def Jam or whoever for a new Lox album for years, my theory is that whenever they feel like doing a group project but don't have a major label ready to put it out they just call it D-Block.

some dude, Friday, 21 January 2011 02:59 (fourteen years ago)

I now have all of Styles P's solo albums, and think they're all really solid. love his lyrics, street level but he pulls out some really cool turns of phrase...the production's really nice too. think Super Gangster bogs down in the second half but starts out really solid.

now waiting for my new copy of the first damn Lox album, urgh.

digging on the newest one. I liked last year's Float, feel like he's doin more interesting stuff lyrically on this one. the beats are mostly nondescript and get out of the way.

like the track w/ Vado a lot

still get hyped when his verse comes up on "B.M.F.". very different beat than he's comfortable with usually and he kills it.

Fash Gordon (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 21 December 2022 19:44 (two years ago)

very few missteps in dude's career, though also few 'classics'. he's just consistently good
