These Are Apparently ILM's Ten Favourite Albums of The Year So Far

I got bored. I worked out from the "Best of 2002" thread what ILM's fave albums are. Because lists rule. Anyway, here you are:

1. “Original Pirate Material” The Streets
2. “Yankee Hotel Foxtrot” Wilco
3. "Fantastic Damage" El-P
4. "Textstar" Farben
5. “Turn On The Bright Lights” Interpol
6. “Murray Street” Sonic Youth
7. “Tomorrow Never Comes” Xinlisupreme
8. “Geogaddi” Boards of Canada
9. “Finally We Are No One” Mum
10. “Blazing Arrow” Blackalicious

So, is this list any better than the average Rolling Stone/NME/Q list? And what does it say about ILM's musical taste? And should I get a life? Answers these questions, and more, in this thread.

The Actual Mr. Jones (actual), Friday, 23 August 2002 18:34 (twenty-three years ago)

(dom did you really TABULATE?!)

Statistics relax me. Seriously. I go to www.boxrec.com when I'm stressed and it just unwinds me summat rotten.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 23 August 2002 18:34 (twenty-three years ago)

'distilling the ILM gestalt'

kind of like a gestalt liquor.

lawrence kansas, Friday, 23 August 2002 19:14 (twenty-three years ago)

'ten favorite' != 'ten most preferred by individual posters'

Josh (Josh), Friday, 23 August 2002 19:15 (twenty-three years ago)

haha or 'most preferred by the most posters'

'apparently george w is america's favorite candidate'

Josh (Josh), Friday, 23 August 2002 19:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Mr haha, what happened to your blog? Not that I'd be really interested anymore in your proof that Wilco's lyrics are shit. But still instead of trying to kill threads keeping promises would be something I could appreciate a little more...

And how would you calculate the ILM favourites? This negative destructive attitude of yours really pisses me off.

By the way I don't want to start a flame war here (neither a 200+ posts thing with insider jokes like in this tiresome blog thread please), just a fruitful discussion. It's not gonna happen so I just cross out this part of the post.

On the subject: A list is a list is a list. Not more and not less.
And this one is not atrociously bad.

'apparently george w is america's favorite candidate'

No, because Al Gore got more votes, remember? Nice try, anyway...

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 23 August 2002 19:28 (twenty-three years ago)

'apparently al gore is really america's favorite candidate'

Josh (Josh), Friday, 23 August 2002 19:30 (twenty-three years ago)

While I don't think that list does that great a job of describing any one person on the board, I do think it does an excellent job of distilling the ILM gestalt.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 23 August 2002 19:35 (twenty-three years ago)

I've got one of them, only listened to it once, might give it another try.

jel -- (jel), Friday, 23 August 2002 19:42 (twenty-three years ago)

i haven't heard a single track off any of these albums

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Friday, 23 August 2002 20:21 (twenty-three years ago)

shouldn't this really be called 'the list of albums that are at the forefront of the ilm crit-consciousness' or something? ugh i HATE consensus polls.

maura (maura), Friday, 23 August 2002 22:54 (twenty-three years ago)

why would I think that this particular list would represent ilm's tastes especially well if I don't think that sort of thing ever works? the same thing comes up every time we talk about this kind of list.

alex, if you'll remember my blog had a notice that it would be down for a while. the downtime is longer than I expected but it's out of my hands - waiting on the madison, wi telephone company. I'm sorry you're not pleased with the quality of my free service to your ungrateful motherfucking ass, either. I said I'd try to write about what I thought (I'm not trying to 'prove' anything to you, I doubt you can be swayed anyway), and I tried once and it didn't work, and I might try again.

Josh (Josh), Friday, 23 August 2002 23:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Were you counting compilations or mix CDs Dom? Because it seems to me that various Bootleg and Electroclash comps, as well asc the Soulwax and probably the So Solid mix CDs have got way more ILM talk-time devoted to them than, say, Xinlisupreme...

Tom (Groke), Saturday, 24 August 2002 07:39 (twenty-three years ago)

This list seems like shit, i have only listened to some mp3s out of the Streets and Mum. I wouldnt dare to listen to something called Xilinsupreme

vic (vicc13), Saturday, 24 August 2002 08:04 (twenty-three years ago)

"seems like shit"

bob zemko, Saturday, 24 August 2002 08:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I doubt you can be swayed anyway
You are either underestimating the power of your own arguments there or you think I am an ignorant or both, Josh.

I have got three albums of that list.

The Wilco record is my favourite record this year. I think it is a masterpiece of eclecticism merging alt.country, pop, electronic music into something very consistent, an album which has a flow like few other records this year.

The Sonic Youth flows well as well but it's a little light-weight compared to what they did before. A good starting point for newcomers nevertheless.

I was a little disappointed of the Boards of Canada but haven't listened to it enough yet. I bought "Music has the right to children" a little later and it immediately replaced the new one as my car stereo listen.

The songs of the Interpol record I heard sounded classic, as if I had heard them before. A little like Elastica's first record which apparently ripped off Wire a lot. I really like them, though again this is not new music. Very early eighties.

I don't know any other of the records on the list though the one or two songs I heard of The Streets didn't impress me much. Rap and its derivatives have never been my cup of tea.

alex in mainhattan (alex63), Saturday, 24 August 2002 13:15 (twenty-three years ago)

I have (listened) to six or seven of that list. So, even though I don't post as much as before, I am still a victim of ILM's powah.

nathalie (nathalie), Saturday, 24 August 2002 14:55 (twenty-three years ago)

heh, have we even talked about xinli on ilm? (outside of these "favorite records of 2002" threads, that is.) i'd like to think the influence of my one nylpm post was great enuff to get them into the "top ten".

jess (dubplatestyle), Saturday, 24 August 2002 15:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Any list that does not include the Beachwood Sparks album will not get my seal of approval

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Sunday, 25 August 2002 21:55 (twenty-three years ago)

You could have an ILM ten most hated list if you ditched seven through ten and added "Heathen Chemistry" four times.
