Can you sum up your personal music theory in three bands or five songs? i.e. bands/songs that best represent your musical/lyrical/packaging ideals... the challenge is to do it in so few steps. Ulp... here's my example:
Amon Duul 2- You're Not Alone
Beatles- It's All Too Much
MC5- American Ruse
Primal Scream- Burning Wheel
J Malik- Arabian Nights
More revisions needed, so hard!

Can you sum up your personal music theory in three bands or five songs?

Fuck no. I don't think I have one to start with.

Radio Birdman, "Do the Pop"
Eric B. and Rakim, "Follow the Leader"
Kraftwerk, "Spacelab"
Beck, "Nobody's Fault But My Own"
James Brown, "Super Bad (pts. 1 and 2)"

Nate Patrin, Friday, 23 August 2002 19:08 (twenty-three years ago)

My reasons:
1) "The pop's the way, the truth, the light."
2) Amazing combination of electro-style beats, funk brass and frighteningly nimble lyricism -- my favorite rap track ever
3) Synthpop and techno's Chuck Berry, IMO more important to the last 25 years of music than the Sex Pistols
4) It's beautiful and sad. And I had to pick something more recent than 1988.
5) Well you see it's James Brown and...

Right now my local college station is playing "The Humpty Dance" and maybe that's my #6.

Beatles: Julia - for the words
Wipers: Youth of America - for the drive
Keith Jarrett: Sun Bear Concerts, Sapporo - for the downs and ups
Wagner: Parsifal Vorspiel - for the trip
Boards of Canada: Everything You Do Is a Balloon - for the dreams

something like that, not really, but I covered most

Can you sum up your personal music theory in three bands or five songs?

Probably not, but it's worth a go:

Klaus Nomi, "Simple Man"
Modern Lovers, "Pablo Picasso"
Arvo Part, "Litany"
Bob Dylan, "Visions of Johanna"
Wipers, "Over the Edge"

THAT'S SO WEIRD: I posted mine before I read Alex's. What are the odds of two Wipers songs showing up next to each other?

Jody Beth Rosen, Friday, 23 August 2002 19:58 (twenty-three years ago)

These answers are really cool, I wish I had more time to explain my choices. But instead, questions!
Wipers- starting point? Isn't that the band KUUURT idolized?
Go-Betweens- how come I've heard their name 1000 times but never heard them. Again, good starting point?
Loose Joints- where from?
Thx PB

I dunno. I never got that into Nirvana, and certainly never idolized KUUUUURRRRT the way you're implying.

Jody Beth Rosen, Friday, 23 August 2002 20:12 (twenty-three years ago)

loose joints.

(ho, ho.)

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 23 August 2002 20:16 (twenty-three years ago)

But I'd recommend Youth of America and Over the Edge as starting points. :-)

Jody Beth Rosen, Friday, 23 August 2002 20:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Down, Fang! I was just asking. There was no insult implied. It just happens to be that's the context in which I've heard the band mentioned.

Reuters by Wire
Heart Of Darkness by Pere Ubu
Innercity Blues by Marvin Gaye

What else do you need in a rock band?

mt, Saturday, 24 August 2002 02:24 (twenty-three years ago)

mt: guitar and drums.

nathalie (nathalie), Saturday, 24 August 2002 08:30 (twenty-three years ago)

nathalie:

Reuters for concise drive.
Heart Of Darkness for meandering paranoia.
Innercity Blues for the groove.

Again, what more do you need?

mt, Saturday, 24 August 2002 22:05 (twenty-three years ago)

1. The Dead C "Bad Politics"
2. Half Japanese "TN TN TN TN Ki"
3. Skip James "Hard Time Killin' Floor Blues"
4. Syd Barrett "No Man's Land"
5. Stooges "Fun House"
