r|t|c, Monday, 16 May 2011 17:30 (fourteen years ago)

which is to say, cecile is a nice lady with some nice songs but she sure do have a weird disproportionate cult around her and a lot of the time it is pretty unfair to her peers

if any of you really believe hers is the best version on any of those riddims then i call bullshit on your souls

r|t|c, Monday, 16 May 2011 17:33 (fourteen years ago)

i mean you guys act like she's chico or something

r|t|c, Monday, 16 May 2011 17:36 (fourteen years ago)

glad ur all listening though, kiu!

r|t|c, Monday, 16 May 2011 17:37 (fourteen years ago)

kinda odd to see this is ur 1st post in this thread, r|t|c (then again, maybe not). any recomendations?

'tump', 'jump inna d benz', 'swag team' and 'heroin needle' from your 2011 traxx list are great, obv.

rusty_allen, Monday, 16 May 2011 17:44 (fourteen years ago)

"pree mi" is the best versh of the blaze fia riddim i've heard! out of uh two but i'm not a completist about checking for every version out

that's my hair no horses up there (lex pretend), Monday, 16 May 2011 17:51 (fourteen years ago)

i don't really see any particular cult around her more than any other dancehall artist who's managed to build a high enough profile and stuck around to maintain it (would say dilettantes would check more for lady saw, busy signal etc these days?)

that's my hair no horses up there (lex pretend), Monday, 16 May 2011 17:52 (fourteen years ago)

...not a big fan of cecile, btw. maybe i gave that impression, dunno. i liked 'pree mi' but that doesn't mean i'd prefer it over other versions of 'blaze fia' (only riddim i listened, tbh). 'bedroom war', 'talk 2 mi uh' or 'do what i said'.

rusty_allen, Monday, 16 May 2011 17:56 (fourteen years ago)

busy yes, la saw.... ennhh if it's even there it's different, based more on her throwback reputation i'd say. if patra wasnt in the slammer and still recorded she'd probably be getting the same, whatever she put out.

(i must stress there's nothing wrong with liking any of cecile's stuff, just...)

r|t|c, Monday, 16 May 2011 18:02 (fourteen years ago)

busy spends the majority of his time courting dilettantes as well so even that's not quite the cecile thing as i see it

r|t|c, Monday, 16 May 2011 18:03 (fourteen years ago)

i mean aren't we all kinda guilty of it to an extent - i'm not gonna auto-cosign anything ce'cile puts out and nor am i just gonna limit myself to her, but she does go to the top of the pile when it comes to checking stuff out, because yeah i've loved her style and her persona over the years

that's my hair no horses up there (lex pretend), Monday, 16 May 2011 18:04 (fourteen years ago)

I suppose I am guilty of being disproportionally into ce'cile, but I don't feel that bad about it. What do you all think of this?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-AYhQoy3YXU

rob, Monday, 16 May 2011 18:36 (fourteen years ago)

rtc, from your 2011 tracks list, "tok ft sleepy hallowtips - heroin needle" is IMMENSE. also liking TOK's "No Sah" on the Wildlife riddim.

rob, Monday, 16 May 2011 19:25 (fourteen years ago)

ah no (sah) that tok is on the swag team riddim, which it appears i havent given the sufficient time of day since discovering it was unrelated to busy's own 'swag team' song

'no sah' is pretty good actually! tok invariably disappoint these days but doing their best cypress hill impression suited them magnificently and totally unexpectedly on 'heroin needle'

moreso with that song i must admit a sense of peace washed over me at finally being able to mention a worthwhile song involving SLEEPY HALLOWTIPS whose amazing name i have delighted in since like 2008

r|t|c, Monday, 16 May 2011 19:42 (fourteen years ago)

back when i imagine he thought that pun would live everlastingly

if you'd like to talk about the actual wildlife riddim however then all i will say it is FUCKING INCREDIBLE!!!! i agonized for ages over which version was the best but finally decided that really this is that one riddim where the whole thing must be listened to in sequence to fully appreciate its glory. (also: it's the assassin cut.)

r|t|c, Monday, 16 May 2011 19:47 (fourteen years ago)

as u can see you'll always get more out of me appealing to my bloodsportiveness than my sense of pedagoguery

bring it

r|t|c, Monday, 16 May 2011 19:54 (fourteen years ago)

of course you're right about my Wildlife confusion--I got various youtubes scrambled. Assassin's "Badda" would also be my pick out of the few I tried, though Mavado's AK47 was good too (though now I'm listening to the Elephant Man, which is also ace, as was the Bramma...er).

back when i imagine he thought that pun would live everlastingly

lol, I don't think I even registered that as a pun until you said that--it's kind of beautiful.

rob, Monday, 16 May 2011 20:16 (fourteen years ago)

yeah you could even well argue mavado's is the least impressive, until the riddim ends and it of course turns out there's only one man's hook you're still singing.

busy fantastically nimble once again - possibly my level favourite alongside assassin's pure mayhem just for the way he captures the riddim's gypsyish leaning. what more is there left to say about di genius? just remarkable.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qD51xtOM0bM

also did you catch this one as well? deliciously ridiculous side salad to 'badda'.

r|t|c, Monday, 16 May 2011 20:49 (fourteen years ago)

haha, that intro is marvelous. you have to wonder is it really wise to bombastically sing "they cyaan murder me" like that? the gods are likely to hear something as over the top as that. Going to have to wait until I get home from work to really appreciate this riddim.

rob, Monday, 16 May 2011 21:09 (fourteen years ago)

Tyler the Creator Knows White People (The Brainwasher), Sunday, 18 September 2011 00:04 (fourteen years ago)

chino's album is full of genre dabblings and positive pop reggae conscious jams (black eyed peas, wyclef were mentioned in the allmusic review, though perhaps a little too broadly) and as such will always be too herby to win many hipster kisses. i do often come back to it though for its sunny undemanding vibes and generally v high quality craftsmanship; it's exactly the album it set out to be, and its self assurance is perpetually charming. if 'hustler' were on it it wouldnt have struck me as a particularly outstanding highlight.

know how i know none of you checked the album btw? umpteen times i mentioned this song by-the-by (once invoking funkystepz iirc?) and still no one's bugged out over it

r|t|c, Tuesday, 20 September 2011 01:05 (fourteen years ago)

konshens - from 12 to 12 (12 to 12)
propa fade ft muschino - no trust (nymphomaniac)
leftside ft syon - hold me tight

these are alrite

r|t|c, Tuesday, 20 September 2011 01:22 (fourteen years ago)

okay, the ott guitar shredding on Never Change is still a bit of a stumbling block for me, but "undemanding sunny vibes" is a good way of putting it, and I'm quite liking the laidback Protected now

rob, Tuesday, 20 September 2011 02:14 (fourteen years ago)

actually the run from Protected - Pon Your Head - I Am is excellent, and Yeah Yeah isn't bad either, just not as great as I Am. I'm starting to think maybe you undersold this, lol @ me

Ward 21-produced new Natalie Storm (& Deewun): http://largeup.okayplayer.com/2011/10/19/largeup-world-premiere-natalie-storm-gimme-60-f-deewun/

rob, Thursday, 20 October 2011 01:43 (fourteen years ago)

v cool! unsurprisingly!

kinda amazing-ish thing about ward 21 these days is that even though they're possibly the most well known dancehall production auteurs (for ppl of a certain age perhaps), and receive more than their fair share of media lip service in comparison to everyone else, the true extent of their awesomeness is STILL pretty much underexamined. a proper compilation of them would have to be high up in my fantasy record label daydreams.

r|t|c, Thursday, 20 October 2011 07:32 (fourteen years ago)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u0d9GgBQr1s

ward 21 would however have to wait its turn behind my mad cobra c&w album project! (he barely ever does them (or anything much these days sadly) but when he does he is truly to the prairie born.)

I meant to follow up on the Ward 21 talk upthread--have they done anything this year that tops Make Up Sex? I was listening to the 2003 RRR the other day, and their "Petrol" is a highlight. In the absence of rtc's wished-for comp, would any of you take a stab at a POX?
